THE MAYOR OF DERBY Councillor Pauline Latham OBE
Pauline was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire and lived in a small village called Navenby.
When she was four her parents moved to Nottingham, and when she was ten they moved to Beeston just outside of Nottingham.
She attended Bramcote Hills Secondary Technical School.
Pauline had a variety of jobs in Nottingham and then in London following her marriage to Derek, before moving to Derby in 1970 where she joined the Midland Bank (now HSBC) on St Peter’s Street.
Pauline and Derek were married in 1968 in Beeston Parish Church.
They have three adult children, Sarah, Ben and Oliver, and now two grandchildren, Poppy and Harry.
Pauline has run a number of businesses over the years, from catering for business clients to undertaking Criminal Record Bureau checks for schools and care homes nationally.
She has also done a variety of voluntary as well as political work.
She has been a Barnardo’s fundraiser, was a member of the Kite Appeal which raised £1.5 million in 18 months for the Children’s Hospital, a member of the Ecclesbourne School PTA for nine years and then went on to become a governor, and was Chairman for a long time.
As a result of becoming a governor of Ecclesbourne School she went on to become a founder member of the national Grant Maintained Schools Advisory Committee which represented headteachers and governors to Government, Trade Unions, OFSTED, the Teacher Training Agency and many others.
She was their national Chairman for about six years.
Pauline was PCC secretary to St Michael’s Church in Darley Abbey for three years, and a member of the Ministry of Welcome at the Cathedral for two years following its inception.
Pauline became involved with politics after leading the campaign to Save Ecclesbourne’s Sixth Form.
She decided that if politics could affect her children’s education because the County Council had decided, for political, not educational, reasons to change the education at the school then she had better get involved in it.
She won a bye-election for the then Breadsall Ward for the County Council in October 1987 where she became the spokesman on education.
She joined the City Council in 1991. Apart from one year when she lost her seat she has been a member of Derby City Council ever since, undertaking a number of roles.
It was in 1995 that she received her OBE from the Queen ‘for services to education, especially the Ecclesbourne School’.
In her spare time, Pauline enjoys riding in Derbyshire and riding holidays, walking in Derbyshire, sailing, the theatre and, when she has time, reading (other than Council papers).
