DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEVENTH DAY BAPTISTS AND SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS, 1844–1884 Michael W. Campbell Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies Silang, Cavite, Philippines Abstract This paper reviews the complex relationship between two Sabbatarian denominations: Seventh Day Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists. The primary point of contact was through the Seventh Day Baptist, Rachel Oaks Preston, who shared her Sabbatarian views during the heyday of the Millerite revival. Later, after the Great Disappointment, one such post-disappointment group emerged with a distinctive emphasis upon the seventh-day Sabbath. These Sabbath-keeping Adventists, organized in 1863 as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, established formal relations with Seventh Day Baptists between 1868 and 1879 through the exchange of delegates who identified both commonalities as well as differences. Their shared interest in the seventh-day Sabbath was a strong bond that, during this time, helped each group to look beyond their differences. Keywords: Seventh Day Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, Adventists, interfaith dialogue Introduction1 Seventh Day Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists share a fundamental conviction that the seventh-day Sabbath is the true biblical Sabbath. Each tradition, although spawned two centuries apart, argues that, soon after the New Testament period, the Christian church began to worship on Sunday rather than continue to observe the Jewish Sabbath. Both groups teach that the original Sabbath was the seventh day, instituted at Creation and affirmed when God gave the Ten Commandments. Each tradition developed their view of the Sabbath during a time of chaos in which religious figures sought to return to what they believed was an earlier, purer form of Christianity.

    All Baptist churches are not alike. Like other Baptists, Seventh Day Baptists believe in: the saving love of Jesus Christ the Bible as the inspired word of God and a record of God’s will for man. The Bible is our authority both for our faith and our daily conduct. freedom of thought under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. the congregational form of church government. Every member of the church has the right to participate in the decision making process of the church. So why are Seventh Day Baptists different? Seventh Day Baptists observe the Biblical seventh day Sabbath, the day established and blessed by God at earth’s creation. The Sabbath was given to mankind long before any distinctions between Jew and Gentile. God commanded that the seventh day (Saturday) be kept holy. Jesus agreed by keeping it as a day of worship. We observe the seventh day of the week (Saturday) as God’s Holy Day as an act of loving obedience--not as a means of salvation. Salvation is the free gift of God through Jesus Christ. The Sabbath provides believers with a specific time to honor and worship the Creator. It is the joy of the Sabbath that makes Seventh Day Baptists just a little bit different. Seventh Day Baptist beginnings Seventh Day Baptists emerged as a part of the English Reformation, organizing their first church in London in the 1650’s. That church, the Mill Yard Seventh Day Baptist Church, has continued for over 300 years. The first Seventh Day Baptist church in America was established in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1671.

Martin Part 3: Adventist Theology vs. Historic Christianity Are there serious differences concerning cardinal doctrines of Christianity? In the first two articles of this series on Seventh-day Adventism, we were concerned chiefly with the history and some of the theological doctrines of the Adventist denomination. We saw how Seventh-day Adventism developed from the Second Advent (Millerite) Movement following the Great Disappointment of 1844, and that the early Adventists came from varying religious backgrounds, some orthodox and some heterodox—that is, out of harmony with generally accepted doctrinal teaching in particular areas. Thus, it was some years before certain segments within the main body resolved their differences and consolidated their beliefs in a doctrinal platform acceptable to the majority. We are concerned in this article with some of the differences between Seventh-day Adventist theology and the theology of “historic orthodoxy.” We have two questions: (1) Are there major differences regarding the cardinal doctrines of the Christian faith, between Seventh-day Adventist theology and evangelical orthodoxy? (2) Are the other differences that exist an insuperable barrier to fellowship between Seventh-day Adventists and evangelicals? Extensive study reveals seven areas of disagreement. We shall note the seven areas, discuss them, and attempt to reach a conclusion based upon all available evidence, by-passing the morass of prejudice accumulating for almost one hundred years. 1. Conditional Immortality, “Soul Sleep” and Annihilation The doctrine of “soul sleep” (unconsciousness in death) and the final extinction of all the wicked, is a cardinal tenet in the theological superstructure of the Seventh-day Adventists Church.

    HISTORY OF THE SABBATH AND ADVENTISTS The Adventist pioneers were first introduced to the Sabbath by Baptists? Here's the story on how the Sabbath come to Adventism. A young girl took on the job of school teacher in Hampshire Washington. She attended a church which called itself the "Christian Brethren" and whose members had accepted Miller's message. Their Pastor was a circuit-riding Methodist named Frederick Wheeler. The mother of the school teacher decided to move to Hampshire to be with her daughter. She was a Seventh Day Baptist! But she attended church with her daughter that Sunday. Pastor Wheeler, preached a sermon in which he upheld the ten commandments. Mrs. Rachel Oakes, the visitor, nearly stood to her feet then and there. But she controlled herself-- until Pastor Wheeler, on his pastoral rounds, paid her a visit. Said she to him, "When you were speaking, brother Wheeler, I could scarcely restrain myself. You said that we must observe all of the Ten Commandants, and yet you continually break one of them yourself!" "Sister Oakes," exclaimed the good man, "what do you mean?" "I mean that the fourth commandment says, 'The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God,' but you observe the first day. You observe the pope's Sunday instead of the Lord's Sabbath!" The story does not give us the good pastor's response, but we know that sometime in March of 1844 he made his decision to keep the seventh-day Sabbath. Thus Frederick Wheeler of New Hampshire, became the first Seventh- day Adventist minister in North America.

SEVENTH DAY BAPTIST INFLUENCE UPON MILLERITES Summary Before the October Disappointment in 1844 an interest in the seventh-day Sabbath had originated among Millerites. Some of them began to observe the seventh-day Sabbath instead of the first day. By that time, Seventh Day Baptists had been keeping the seventh-day Sabbath for a couple of centuries. During much of that long period of time Seventh Day Baptists had been quite passive in sharing the Sabbath with other Christians. By the beginning of the 1840s, however, they determined to take a more aggressive approach to promoting their understanding of the Sabbath. In this work we will discuss Seventh Day Baptist influence upon Millerites. The basic question addressed in this paper is: “To what extent did Seventh Day Baptists influence Millerites in terms of Sabbath?” The purpose of this work is to organize chronologically information about the influence of the Seventh Day Baptist Sabbath upon Millerites during 1840s. In order to accomplish the main purpose of this paper it will be necessary to chronologically reconstruct and analyze the historical development of the influence of Seventh Day Baptist upon Millerites. Millerites were people who followed William Miller who was one of the more remarkable and controversial Christian revivalist in the first half of the 19th century. He believed that the Second Coming of Jesus would be on October 22nd, 1844. About 200.000 people accepted his view with more than a million brought under his influence.
