Bringing the Arts Together for 23 Years Cedar Beach Park Allentown, www.mayfairfestival.org

Sponsored by WELCOME

From the Board President Personally, and on behalf of the Mayfair Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Mayfair, the 23rd Annual Festival of the Arts in Allentown. Mayfair is pleased once again to offer something for everyone in the family from our KidsSpace area to our food vendors, to our Artists Market, to our five stages offering entertain- ment during the five days and evenings of Mayfair. Please visit Sommerfest In The Valley, back for its second year, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall, here for the first time this year. We invite you to visit our Auction Tent featuring wonderful items at a silent auction and an Art-to-Go raffle. On the back of the program book is Susan Rutt a free coupon for you to fill out and deposit in the Auction tent to possibly win some Mayfair prizes. Mayfair is again made possible through the strong support of our community, our festival patrons, our gener- ous sponsors and the large number of dedicated volunteers who return year after year to make this entire weekend possible. Please join us in experiencing the “Magic of Mayfair” and enjoying the beauty of Allentown’s parks. Since Mayfair occurs over the Memorial Day Weekend, it provides an opportunity each day to honor those heroes who have laid down their lives in the cause of freedom, and to remember the sacrifices they have made. Various branches of the military will be with us, and the Vietnam Veterans Wall will be open throughout the festival. Come and have fun at Mayfair, and at the same time reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Susan Rutt, President Mayfair Board of Directors

From the Executive Director Welcome to the 23rd annual Mayfair Festival of the Arts! We are pleased to once again host what we feel will be an outstanding event for the people of the . Our theme this year is “The Magic of Mayfair,” which we hope expresses how people feel about the event and the approach we take in organizing the Mayfair festival every year. We are proud to host over 150 performan- ces during our five-day festival along with many other exciting activities. As always, our KidSpace area is a wonderful experience for children and families and we have expanded other areas of the festival as well. As with other years at Mayfair, we have a great number of new and exciting events and activities that you absolutely will not want to miss. Terry Glennon Some of the new and returning features and events to Mayfair this year include: • The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall – We will be hosting this half-size replica of the Washington, D. C. memorial across the street from Mayfair during the full-run of our event. It will surely be a memorable addition to our festival! • Sommerfest In The Valley – A “Celebration of Germanic Heritage” is back for the second consecutive year after an outstanding debut at the 2008 festival. • Contests – We will be holding four contests this year throughout the festival including the 3rd annual hot dog eating contest and three first-time contests including the Mr. Mayfair contest, the Mayfair Idol contest and a Breakdance competition. • Pulse Stage – (KidStage during the day-time) will showcase some of the Lehigh Valley’s best young talent. • Armed Forces – To celebrate this Memorial Day weekend, we will once again have the branches of the armed forces (one branch each day) present at Mayfair. I want to sincerely thank our sponsors for supporting Mayfair this year and making it possible for us to hold our 23rd annual event. Last but not least, I want to thank all of our volunteers who are the lifeblood of our organization and we would not be able to hold the Mayfair Festival of the Arts without them. See you at Mayfair! THE MOVING WALL Mayfair Festival of the Arts is proud to host The Moving Wall during the festival’s full run, May 21-25, over the Memorial Day Weekend. The festival, itself, takes place at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown’s west end; however, The Moving Wall will be located just across Ott Street in the serene park setting behind the Rose Garden, where it will be maintained in a dignified and respectful atmosphere during public viewing. The Moving Wall is the traveling half-size replica (253-feet in length) of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Since its debut display in Tyler, Texas, in October 1984, The Moving Wall has been traveling the country from April to November, spending about a week at each site and attracting thousands. Mayfair officials are honored to be able to bring The Moving Wall to the Valley during the patriotic holiday of Memorial Day, for a special time of remembrance and education. We want to honor those 58,261 American servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. We want to honor those Vietnam veterans who are here with us now, and we want to educate the public and our children of the sacrifices that were made during the Vietnam War. Freedom is not free, it comes at a price, and the price of that freedom is written on the Wall.

Liebe Festival Freunde und Gäste: Sommer (summer in German) is coming early again this year! The Lehigh Saengerbund, the German-American Society of the Lehigh Valley, is once again the proud organizer of Sommerfest In The Valley 2009. For its second appearance, Sommerfest will be an even more exciting part of Mayfair Festival of the Arts 2009 as an authentic Germanic venue. The Lehigh Saengerbund, an Allentown organization since 1858, is 151 years old. It started as a traditional, family-oriented singing society. While maintaining its musical roots as one of the oldest choruses in the country, the organization has developed a focus on cultivating, preserving and strengthen- ing German-American culture, education and traditions along with sister Photo courtesy of ConcertPix Germanic groups in the region. To bring more awareness to these efforts, we seek fun and educational ways to celebrate Germanic culture with a unique American flair. Sommerfest is intended to demon- strate this through a combination of activities highlighting the music, culture, and traditions in a way that promises to entertain everyone, whether of Germanic ancestry or otherwise. We invite you to look at this event as an opportunity to extend your knowledge and/or understanding of the Germanic language and culture. We encourage you to wear traditional clothing, Lederhosen or Dirndl (collectively called Trachten), and speak in German. Sommerfest offers individuals and com- munities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region an opportunity to experience the uniqueness of Germanic culture, heritage, history and entertainment.

Wilkommen (welcome), viel spaβ (much fun) und vielen dank (many thanks) to Mayfair and our many sponsors, supporters and volunteers.
