Eric Garcetti is now in his second term as the 42 nd mayor of the city of Los Angeles—the latest chapter in a public service career that began nearly two decades ago when he was first elected to the Los Angeles City Council. A fourth- generation Angeleno and the grandson and great-grandson of immigrants, Garcetti’s life and public career have been driven by his commitment to the values of justice and equity. He led the campaign to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour, lowered its business tax, passed an ambitious public transportation plan, and has led a major regional initiative to house the homeless. He also led the successful bid to bring the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games to Los Angeles. At the same time, he has focused on improving the delivery of basic city services—paving roads, filling potholes, repairing sidewalks, and planting trees. Garcetti received his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University, studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University and later at the London School of Economics. He served as an assistant professor of diplomacy and world affairs at Occidental from 1999 to 2000 . Bache lor of Arts

Academic Costume

Academic costume dates back to European universities in the Middle Ages, when gowns and hoods were required for warmth in unheated buildings. Eventually in the United States the mortarboard, with medieval tassel, became the standard headwear, while the colorful hood is draped over the back of the gown.

Gowns are normally black, although some universities have designed their own in the color of the institution. The hood reflects both the field of study and the institution that conferred the degree. An Occidental hood has a black-and-orange lining to reflect the College’s colors. The color of the velvet edging on the hood is that of the degree conferred. The width of the edging represents the degree—two, three, or five inches for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees respectively. The mortarboard is black with a black tassel, although if worn by the holder of a doctoral degree, it may have a gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side; graduates, on the left.

The following colors are associated with the degrees frequently represented in an academic procession of the faculty in a liberal arts college:

Arts, Letters, Humanities White Medicine Kelly Green Economics Copper Music Pink Education Light Blue Philosophy Dark Blue Fine Arts Brown Physical Education Sage Green Law Purple Science Golden Yellow Library Science Lemon Theology Scarlet

Members of the governing board of an institution are entitled to wear doctoral gowns. Trustees of Occidental College wear gold medallions embossed with the College seal, hung from an orange ribbon, with their black gowns.

Cultural Identity

One of the most important accomplishments of a student’s college experience is the development of their authentic self. Members of the Class of 2019 proudly display their ethnic identity with a black stole bearing the Occidental crest and class year. The two tips of the stole reflect their ethnicity either by a fabric or a flag that is representative of their heritage. Students who identify as LGBTQI+ wear a double lavender cord, and first-generation graduates wear a white-and-orange cord.
