Mid-America Council ~ of America KLONDIKE 2019 February 22 - 24 LITTLE SIOUX RANCH

It will be a weekend full of scout skills, teamwork, games, fun & contests for scouts of all ranks. The excitement begins on Friday night with the arrival of Boy Scouts, Venture’s & adult Scouters.

There’s gold in them thar hills!!

What unit has what it takes to win the Gold Count?

(As determined by the LSSR Assayer’s Office)

The lively competition will begin on Saturday morning. Be prepared for a re-enactment of the California Gold Rush! Each participating unit will be required to provide a Klondike sled or wagon for their Western expedition. The style & design of the wagon will be left up to the imaginations of the participants. The “carrier” must be large enough & sturdy enough to carry the necessary equipment & gear to survive the rigorous journey.

Scouts will be required to make sure that they have all the gear & equipment on the list, and that all the items are fastened to their wagon. There will be knot-tying stations where scouts will learn how to properly secure their equipment to their wagons. Wagon masters will be on site to inspect each wagon prior to departure.

After successfully passing inspection, each wagon will receive a sealed packet with their directions and a portion of a map, which may lead them to a gold claim. As they travel along the dusty trails, participants will come across a variety of stations along the way to show them useful skills that they’ll need to survive as they travel. As they go from station to station, scouts will be able to collect additional pieces to the map.

Dealing with snakebites, gun-shot wounds, arrow removal & the occasional horse kick are only some of the topics to be covered at the First Aid station. There will be an Archery station, where scouts will have time to work on those skills necessary for their survival in “Gold Rush” territory!

There will also be a fire-building station where scouts can work on those survival skills. In addition to learning how to build a fire, scouts will be required to cook a flap-jack at that station. Scouts must eat the flap-jack they cook, and for some, this may be the most dangerous part of their journey!

An Orienteering station will also be part of the day’s events, as scouts work on the skills they’ll need to decipher the map and find the Gold Claim. There will also be a Panning for Gold station where scouts can actively pan for gold. Any gold nuggets collected can be brought to the Assayer’s Office, where they will be weighed & cashed in like in the Gold Rush show, who will win the Gold Count!

Note: Scout Spirit will be a very important part of this “Gold Rush” Weekend. Participants are encouraged to decorate their campsite according to the theme & wear Western-style clothing if they choose, however, please arrive at Little Sioux Scout Ranch in uniform. All patrols participate in the Scout Spirit Award. Conduct of the Scouts during activities throughout the weekend is considered as well as how they function as a patrol within a unit in their campsite. Camporee staff will visit campsites during the weekend, and Scout Spirit Awards will be presented at closing ceremony. • Meals: (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday [Lunch on the trail], and Sunday breakfast) are the unit’s responsibility. SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER WILL BE PROVIDED.

Input from the youth is imperative for the success of future events. Note that this meeting is for the youth leadership & Camporee committee members to communicate. Any other adults present should be silent and allow the boys to speak. A Cracker barrel for unit leaders immediately follows the SPL cracker barrel. This meeting follows the same format as the youth leadership meeting. Refreshments are provided at both cracker barrels.

Staff is vitally needed to continue to run quality programs for our Scouts. If your unit can provide more than 1 staff member, we truly appreciate it & ask that you forward any names to the Camporee committee as soon as possible to plan staffing more efficiently.
