Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian State of Rajasthan. It is located 335 kilometers west from the state capital, Jaipur and 200 kilometers from the city of Ajmer. It was formerly the seat of the princely state of the same name, the capital of the kingdom known as . Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many places, forts and temples set in the stark landscapes of the Thar Desert.

The climate of Jodhpur is generally hot and semi- arid, but with a rainy season from late June to September. Temperatures are extreme throughout the period from March to October, except when monsoonal rain produces thick clouds to lower it slightly. In the months if April, May and June, high temperatures routinely exceed 40 degrees Celsius. During the monsoon season, average temperatures decreases slightly. However, the city’s generally low humidity rises and this adds to the normal discomfort from the heat.

The city is known as the “Sun City’’ for bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred as the “Blue City’’ due to the blue-painted houses around the Fort. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base for travel in a region much frequent by tourists.

The handicrafts industry has in recent years eclipsed all the industries in the city. By some estimates, the furniture export segment is a $200 millions industry. Other items manufactured include textiles, metal utensils, bicycles, ink and sporting goods. A flourishing cottage industry exists in the manufacture of such items as glass bangles, cutlery, carpets and marble products. After handicrafts, tourism is second largest industry of Jodhpur. Crops grown in the district include Wheat and the famous Matharia Res Challies; gypsum and salt are mined. The city serves as an important market place for wool and agricultural products.

Some of the important fairs and festivals held are Marwar Sufi Festival, , , Nag Panchami Fair, Mahavir Jayanti and Shiettla Mata, Jodhpur can boast of a first class grass polo ground that will doubtless produces the next generation of international Jodhpur players and play host to potential Indian Starts and the best of the country and the world.

Sikh Gurudwara, Sojati Gate ATTRACTIONS Mehrangarh Fort Timing: 9am to 5pm Mehrangarh, the majestic and historic fort of jodhpur, was built in 1459 A.D. by Rao Jodha, of the fifteenth Rathore dynasty that held sway over the desert kingdom of Marwar from the 13th to the 20th Centuries. His successors added liberally; and the “Citadel of the Sun’’ is today a magnificent blend of many different ages.

Perched 400 feet high above the city of Jodhpur, burnished in the distinctive red sand- stone of Marwar….Imposing and invincible Mehrangarh was described by a moved Rudyard Kipling, as the “the work of angels and giants’’.

The fort houses a vast collection of howdahs, palanquins, textiles, decorative arts, miniature painting, manuscripts, headgear and also and extensive collection of weapons from every era of Rajasthan history. The display of cannons on the ramparts near the Chamunda temple is amongst the rarest in India.

The Mehrangarh Museum Shop, is a nonprofit organization, and all proceeds from the shop contribute to the restoration and conservation of the Mehrangarh and Nagore Forts.

The Museum Shops is affiliated to the Smithsonian Society and is an accredited member of the International Museum Store association.

Jaswant Thada Timing: 9am to 5pm Built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, in 1899, the imposing white marble memorial marks the site of a royal crematorium. The cenotaph houses portraits of successive rulers. The four cenotaphs commemorate notable acts of bravery and generosity of the four successive rulers.

Umaid Bhawan Palace Timing: 9am to 5pm Operational in a part of the gigantic . It displays a vast collection of clocks and watches, ornate mirrored furniture , galss, crystal ware and photographs.

Mandore garden Timing: 9am to 5pm The former capital of maharajas of Marwar is located about 5 miles north of jodhpur, here you will find the Dewals, or Cenotaphs of Jodhpur’s former rulers, with high rock terrace make it a popular local attraction.

Balsamand Lake This is a pretty lake built in 1159 AD. A marvelous summer palace stands by the lake side, surrounded by beautiful gardens EXECURSIONS Guda (a Bishnoi village) It is the nearest point from jodhpur to exotic wild life and nature. During the season thousands of birds like domicile cranes etc. can be seen here. This pond is the water drinking point for the antelopes and black bucks of nearby area.

Nimaj Nimaj boasts of a temple built in 9th century. Dedicated to goddess durga, it also has a unique art gallery showcasing masterpeices of sculptural art.

Sojat Sojat city is situated on the left bank of the Sukri River near pali town. Known as Tamravati in ancient times, the fort has a big reservoir and several temples like Sejal Mata, Chaturbujh and much more. The old temple of Chamunda Mata is located on the top of one of the hillocks. Dargah of Pir Mastan is the main attraction at the time of Urs- the Muslim festival. One of the major attractions of the city is the Plantation of Mehandi Trees.

Sardar Samand Lake (60 km south east) It attracts a variety of migratory birds such as Pelicans, Flamingos, Cranes, Egrets and Kingfishers. On the way to the lake, Visitors can also watch certain wildlife species such as Blackbuck, Nilgai and Chinkara.

Osian (65 Km) This ancient town of the Thar Desert was a great trading center between 8th to 12th centuries. Today it is a desert oasis with 16 brahamanical and jain temples, beautifully sculpted and designed, most of which have stood the ravages of time. A camel ride at sunset is a major attraction. WHAT IF YOUR HEAR THE FIRE ALARM?

IF THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS. EVACUATE. Leave the room immediately via the nearest exit staircase. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PACK BELONGINGS. Time is precious. Save your life first. TAKE YOUR KEY CARD WITH YOU. You may need to go back to your room if your exit is blocked. STAY CALM. Panic will not help.

EVACUATE Should the first get out of control, close all doors behind you and leave the building via the exit staircase. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS. WHAT IF, YOU ARE TRAPPED IN YOUR ROOM?
