Just one of many commemorations around the World to mark one hundred years since the end of The Great War. Another major piece of art, formed a focal point as the UK commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ brought home the sheer scale of human sacrifice in the battle that came to epitomize the bloodshed of the 1914-18 war – the Battle of the Somme. Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

INTRODUCTION One of the missions of The Friends of Valley Forge Park is the promotion of our historical heritage so that the spirit of what took place over two hundred years ago continues to inspire both current and future generations of all people. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we are able to offer to the public this chronology of events of The American Revolution. While a simple listing of facts, it is the hope that it will instill in some the desire to dig a little deeper into the fascinating stories underlying the events presented. The following pages were compiled over a three year period with text taken from many sources, including the internet, reference books, tapes and many other available resources. A bibliography of source material is listed at the end of the book. This publication is the result of the dedication, time and effort of Mr. Frank Resavy, a long time volunteer at Valley Forge National Historical Park and a member of The Friends of Valley Forge Park. As with most efforts of this magnitude, a little help from friends is invaluable. Frank and The Friends are enormously grateful for the generous support that he received from the staff and volunteers at Valley Forge National Park as well as the education committee of The Friends of Valley Forge Park. FLoB is a simple rule set to start with but if you are going to play with 8 players each with a squadron of 6 ship- of-the-line you need to get through the turns rapidly. I have designed a couple of play aids and a suitable play sheet. The proof is in the outcomes. www.fjordr.com v. 100816 Wreck of HMS Falmouth, off Bridlington Statement of Significance with supporting narrative Introduction This Statement of Significance has been prepared by Fjordr Limited on behalf of Historic England as part of the HMS Falmouth project (HE 7025). HMS Falmouth was a Town Class light cruiser laid down February 1910 at Beardmores at Dalmuir on the River Clyde. HMS Falmouth was based in home waters during the First World War and was engaged in numerous operations, including several major engagements (Heligoland Bight, 28th August 1914; Raid on Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool, 16th December 1914; Jutland, 31st May – 1st June 1916). HMS Falmouth sank as a result of being repeatedly torpedoed by U-boats in the fleet action of 19-20th August 1916.The identification and position of the wreck of HMS Falmouth are firmly established. The wreck of HMS Falmouth is important in terms of its period and rarity. As an isolated wreck it does not have group value as such, but it has a clear association with the landscape of the North Sea in the First World War. These aspects of its significance arise from the narratives manifest in Falmouth’s physical remains relating to its construction, motive power, armament, operational history and life on board. HMS Falmouth also exhibits several key aspects of England’s history immediately prior to the First World War and in the first two years of the conflict. The importance of the wreck of HMS Falmouth is elaborated below in respect of the ship’s build, use, loss, survival and investigation. -

BRIEFING PAPER Number, 9 January 2018 The National Shipbuilding Strategy: January 2018 By Louisa Brooke-Holland update Summary The Government published a National Shipbuilding Strategy in September 2017, fulfilling a commitment made in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review. The Strategy completely overhauls how the Royal Navy will procure and build its new fleet of general purpose frigates. The Government has already committed to a fleet of eight Type 26 frigates, the first of which will enter service in the mid-2020s. The Shipbuilding Strategy focuses more on the five cheaper frigates, the Type 31e. The Government remains committed to building Navy warships in the UK but the design and build will be open to competition rather than via a non-competitive single source contract with BAE Systems. Exportability will be built into the design of the new Type 31e frigate fleet, to counter the Navy’s poor record in exporting new ships. Lastly, the strategy sets out an aggressive timetable with the main contract to be placed in early 2019 and an in-service date of 2023 for the first in class for the Type 31e. The Royal Navy is in the midst of a major programme to replace and renew its surface warships. Six new destroyers (Type 45) entered service in the first half of this decade and the first of two new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth, was formally commissioned into the fleet in December 2017. The focus now is on the Navy’s frigate fleet and that is the subject of the National Shipbuilding Strategy.
