Analysis of Fishery and Stock of the Portunid Crab, Charybdis Feriata (Linnaeus, 1758) from Veraval Waters, North-West Coast of India

ZALA Veraval Regional Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Matsya Bhavan, Bhidia, Veraval - 362 269 Gujarat, India e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Fishery and stock characteristics of the portunid cab Charybdis feriata from the waters off the north-west coast of India was studied based on commercial trawl landings at Veraval during 2009-2011. Growth parameters L∞, K and -1 -1 t0 were estimated as 171.5 mm, 0.97 yr and -0.10 yr respectively. Mortality parameters Z, M and F were 3.97 yr , -1 -1 1.49 yr and 2.48 yr respectively. The length at capture (L50) and length at maturity (LM50) were 95.4 mm and 87.3 mm, respectively which indicates that crabs enter into peak exploitation phase after attaining sexual maturity. The bio-economic stock assessment model showed that the species can be exploited at the present fishing level to maintain the economy of the fishery at maximum level (MEY) or the effort can be increased by 2.4 times to maximise the yield (MSY) depending upon the management objective. However, since the stock recruitment relationship is not defined, as a precautionary approach, the effort should not be increased more than 1.3 times the present level to conserve the spawning stock. Arete borradailei Coutière, 1903 and Athanas verrucosus Banner and Banner, 1960 are transferred to Rugathanas gen. nov., based on several unique features on the chelipeds, 3rd pereiopods, antennules, and mouthparts. The estab- lishment of Rugathanas enables the redefinition of Athanas Leach, 1814 and Arete Stimpson, 1860, and a for- mal revalidation of Arete, formerly a synonym of Athanas. Two important features, the number of pereiopodal epipods and the number of carpal segments of the 2nd pereiopod, are variable within Rugathanas gen. nov., but may be used to distinguish Athanas from Arete. MILLER2 ABSTRACT: Although gastropods of the family Terebridae are common in sub tidal sand communities throughout the tropics, Terebra gouldi, a species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, is the first terebrid for which a complete life history is known. Unlike most toxoglossan gastropods, which immobilize their prey through invenomation, T. gouldi possesses no poison apparatus and captures its prey with a long muscular proboscis. It is a primary carnivore, preying exclusively on the enteropneust Ptychodera flava, a nonselective deposit feeder. The snail lies com pletely buried in the sand during the day, but emerges to search for prey after dark. Prey are initially detected by distance chemoreception, but contact of the anterior foot with the prey is necessary for proboscis eversion and feeding. The sexes in T. gouldi are separate, and copulation takes place under the sand. Six to eight spherical eggs are deposited in a stalked capsule, and large numbers of capsules are attached in a cluster to coral or pebbles. There is no planktonic larval stage. Juveniles hatch through a perforation in the capsule from 30-40 days after development begins and immediately burrow into the sand. Growth is relatively slow. Young individuals may grow more than 1 cm per year, but growth rates slow considerably with age. Adults grow to a maximum size of 8 cm and appear to live 7-10 years. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. Charybdis hellerii is a potential threat to native crab populations and benthic communities and its introduction should be avoided by adhering to ballast water management guidelines. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description Charybdis hellerii is a small crab measuring from about 5-8 cm wide. It is dark green with a light purple on the upper inner surface of palm and dark purple on dorsal surfaces of distal 4 segments of walking and swimming legs. The carapace has pale green to whitish areas on frontal, hepatic, and epibranchial regions. It is most easily identifiable by the spine on the posterior of the carpus on the fifth leg which bears its chela, or claws giving it one of its common names: spiny hands. Its dorsal carapace is naked and its anterolateral margin has 6 prominent black-tipped teeth. -

Kepiting (Brachyura) merupakan salah satu spesies kunci (keystone species) yang memegang peranan penting di alam. Terdapat ± 150.000 Crustacea yang belum diidentifikasi termasuk kepiting (Brachyura). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa sebaran kepiting (Brachyura) di Pulau Tikus Gugus Pulau Pari, Kepulauan Seribu dengan menggunakan metode transek kuadrat. Transek kuadrat mewakili bagian barat, utara, timur dan selatan Pulau Tikus. Hasil penelitan menunjukkan terdapat 34 jenis dengan total 11 famili kepiting (Brachyura) dari Pulau Tikus yaitu Portunidae, Majidae, Galenidae, Dromiidae, Calappidae, Ocypodidae, Grapsidae, Porcellanidae, Macrophthalmidae, Xanthidae dan Pilumnidae. Keseluruhan jenis kepiting memiliki sebaran pada berbagai habitat dengan substrat yang berbeda sesuai dengan jenis kepiting dan kemampuan adaptasi terhadap lingkungan. Sebaran kepiting bergantung dari keberadaan substrat dan ekosistem sekitar perairan yang mendukung perolehan makanan kepiting. Kata kunci: Kepiting, Brachyura, sebaran, transek kuadrat, Pulau Tikus Abstrak. -
