St. Patrick Mission Statement A Welcoming Faith community called to be witnesses of God’s Love in the Roman Catholic Tradition, through Discipleship, Celebration of His Word and Sacraments, Evangelization and Service in the Hope of Eternal Salvation Page 2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ,

On Palm/Passion Sunday we celebrate the beginning of HOLY WEEK which is the holiest of all times in our liturgical year. It sacramentally makes Lent alive in a very profound way as we celebrate the suffering, crucifixion and death of Jesus. Two tones, joyful and sorrowful, are evident in the celebration. It is not accidental; rather, they underscore the two events that we commemorate, triumphal entry and the passion. The joyful chant from the Gospel, “Hosanna... blessed is he who comes...,” recalls Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The other, “crucify him...” recalls His passion.

Please avail yourself of the many opportunities we have to conclude our Lenten journey during this week. There will be confessions (7:30AM), Morning Prayer (7:45AM) and daily Mass (8:00AM) on Mon-Wed. On Holy Thursday, we end the Season of Lent and begin the shortest season in the liturgical calendar, the Triduum. Our RCIA Catechumen and Candi- dates will represent us during the Chrism Mass with Bishop Malloy in Rockford. We will have the Mass of the Last Sup- per, that is, the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood at 7:00 PM, followed by Adoration at the Altar of Repose until Midnight. The Ladies Guild invites you to join them on the traditional Seven Church Visit of Holy Thursday Night. Good Friday begins with Morning Prayer at 8:00AM followed by the opportunity for Confession, Stations of the Cross at 2:00PM and Veneration of the Cross at 3:00PM. There will be after that the opportunity for Confession. On Holy Satur- day we will have Blessing of Easter Baskets at 11:00AM with the Easter Vigil beginning at 7:30PM. Easter Sunday Mass times are at 7:00AM, 9:00AM and 11:00AM.

Happy Holy Week.

In Christ, Fr. Godwin

Thank you to the PRFF Ministry, Knights of Columbus and all of you who joined me in the McHenry St. Patrick’s Day Parade last Saturday. A shout of gratitude to all who worked so hard in organizing and putting everything in place for our Annual St. Patrick Dinner last Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to all the winners - baskets, 50/50 raffle and Pot of Gold. Special thanks goes out to our Chairpersons Mike & Annette Coughlin. I’m already looking forward to next year. Due to the early print deadline for this weekend’s bulletin, pictures and the list of the winners will be published next weekend.

The Easter Triduum - The Three Most Sacred Days

The Easter Triduum (Latin: three days) is the most ancient and central celebration of the Church’s liturgical year. These days are not a part of Lent, but instead the Church has made them into a special liturgical season all its own. The three days recall Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples (Holy Thursday), His crucifixion and death (Good Friday) and His res- urrection (the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday).

During these three days, we immerse ourselves at home and at church in the most sacred memory of our relationship with God. The paschal mystery of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection is the heart of what God wants to tell us about God’s own self and about ourselves in relation to God. As we remember Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection, we come face to face with the mystery of our own dying and rising.

Holy Thursday: On Holy Thursday the Church celebrates Jesus’ final meal with His disciples and the institution of the Eucharist. The regular Eucharistic ritual is enhanced by the rite of foot-washing, recalling how Jesus washed his disciples feet (Jn 13:1-20). After the liturgy, the Eucharist is transferred to a side altar and kept in a tabernacle there for adoration. The altar is then stripped.

Good Friday: Good Friday is the only day of the year on which Mass is not celebrated. The altar is bare, and the liturgy consists of proclaiming the passion story from John’s Gospel, intercessions, veneration of the cross and a communion service with hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. Parishes may also have Stations of the Cross or meditations on the Seven Last Words of Christ.

Holy Saturday (The Great Vigil of Easter): The Easter Vigil echoes the early Christian ritual that lasted through the night to celebrate the Eucharist at dawn. Only the Eucharist itself is older than the Easter Vigil liturgy. On this night, we celebrate our deliverance by Christ our Passover and look forward to the day when we shall see Him face to face. Its four parts are: the lighting of the Easter candle, the scripture readings recounting the story of our salvation, the initiation of new Catholics, renewal of our own Baptis- mal promises culminating in the celebration of the Eucharist. The Seven Church Visitation March 29th, Holy Thursday Evening

St. Joseph St. John the Baptist Holy Apostles Christ the King Richmond Johnsburg McHenry Wonder Lake St. Mary McHenry For centuries Catholics have been visiting seven churches in their area on Holy Thursday after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This pilgrimage prac- tice originated in Rome, where the faithful visited the seven Roman Basilicas saying prayers and “watching” in adoration at each. This evening pilgrimage corresponds to the seven stops of the Via Cruces that were made by Jesus on His way to Calvary.

St. Patrick’s Ladies Guild offers you the opportunity to participate in this Holy Thursday tradition, by visiting 7 local churches. We will begin by leaving the St. Patrick parking lot at 9:00PM. We will spend approx. 20 minutes per church (including travel time to, time in the church and return to St. Peter transportation). We will carpool to each church and meet and enter the church Spring Grove as a group. We will return to St. Patrick by 11:30PM and you may spend as little or as much time here as you wish - adoration will end at Midnight. St. Patrick McHenry For planning purposes, we ask that you contact the parish office (815-385- 0025) by Tuesday, March 27th if you will join us. Please let us know if you’d be willing to be a driver or would rather be a passenger. Page 6 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
