A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker ([email protected] ). While I was ecstatically getting my brain razed by some of the latest NuProgressives (Chocolate Horses and Nerves Junior being two of the most recent and among the best), this MVD DVD providentially came my way as kind of a subtle grail, a piece of the true cross, a time machine back to where it all started. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer have reigned as co-equal kings among a coterie of legendary ensembles from an age when unbelievable intelligence, talent, and musical mastery held sway, a time that sadly waned as the shenanigans of punk took over (a regicide happily and speedily failed, as we've seen), and is now in the last gasps of its glory. Before Jorden Rudess, Vitali Kuprij, and others arose, Keith Emerson, Jon Lord, Kerry Minear, Mike Pinder, and sundry geniuses established what virtuosity meant in a rock keyboardist. Before Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, and other skins-pounders took over the reins, Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, and others were the drummers to be feared and admired. And when it came to the bass guitar, Greg Lake, Colin Hodgkinson, and Percy Jones preceded Flea and the gaggle of modern day four- stringers. There are aways antecedents. Earlier, Emerson fulfilled a dream we progheads have long held: the reunion of his pre-ELP band, The Nice, and, man, was it ever a rare thrill to see Keith, Brian Davison, and Lee Jackson making music again (if you're a Nice fan, check out the hideously cool Microwerks Diamond Hard Blue Apples of the Moon 2-CD issuance of 'bootleg' materials from the original 60s Nice). -

Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: John Covach Reader: John Nádas Reader: Severine Neff Reader: Allen Anderson Reader: David Garcia © 2006 Akitsugu Kawamoto ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT AKITSUGU KAWAMOTO: Forms of Intertextuality: Keith Emerson’s Development as a “Crossover” Musician (Under the direction of John Covach) Despite the broad range of attempts to mix “rock” and “classical” music by “progressive (“prog”) rock” musicians from the late 1960s, many writers on prog rock have interpreted the music in a relatively monolithic manner; they often have interpreted the resulting intertextuality simplistically as an elitist experiment that opposes rock’s populist origin. This could certainly be one interpretation of prog, but it is only one of many; there are additional kinds of possible narratives, according to the specific ways in which the materials are combined and fused. Yet the variety of intertextual approaches has rarely been recognized explicitly, and little analytical or musicological attention has been paid to the distinctly different intertextual styles. Generalized approaches to intertextuality have been common not only within popular music studies, however, but also within many humanistic fields. Since Julia Kristeva’s coinage of the term intertextuality in the late 1960s, theorists of the arts (literature, music, painting, architecture, etc.), sociology, politics, economics, and many other fields, have almost always treated intertextuality in a singular manner, presuming that all intertextual practices are more or less of the same kind. -

ROBERT MICHAEL /SEROTINA ARCHIVE (MICHAEL) ©Bishopsgate Institute Catalogued by Barbara Vesey, August 2020 MICHAEL Robert Michael/Serotina Archive 2003-2019 Name of Creator: Michael, Robert (1951-2007) musician and DJ Extent: 13 boxes, 1 photo album, 8 posters Administrative/Biographical History: Originally from Folkestone, Kent, Robert attended Harcourt County Primary School (1958-1963) and Harvey Grammar School (1963-1970). He did one year at London City University studying aeronautical engineering (1970-1971) but left when he realised it wasn’t for him. He worked in sales for General Motors (1972-1975), for the Dept of Employment (1975-1978), Highgate Optical Ltd (1979-1982), Datasolve (1982), Promo People (1982-1986) and Audiotext in the Accounts Dept (1987-?) before making the leap to a career in his first love, music. He had formed several bands since his early twenties, including Irma’s Tubes (1973-1976), Night Fire (1976), Ice (1976), High Altitude (1976-1979), Angelle and the White Boys (1979), In Time (1979), Formula One (1979-1980), Travel (1980-1981), A Matter of Climate (1981), Zoot Troup (1981) and Desperate Fun (1986-1989), many of which won numerous competitions, received very favourable press and played support for bands such as Soft Machine. In the early 1990s he branched out into DJing and recording mixes for club gigs, working under the name DJ Serotina with artists including Tasty Tim and Tino Di Placido (to form T-Total) and Mark Moore (as Needledust). Popular and often in demand, he worked steadily throughout the 1990s and early 2000s at London venues and club nights including Salon Kitty, Club Rub, Club Flesh, Skin Two, Club Submission/Torture Garden. -

Space Ritual Biography
SPACE RITUAL BIOGRAPHY Many decades ago when the world was a more innocent place, there emerged from the ether a band of cosmic travelers who made and lived a new kind of life on earth. They manifested themselves as the spirit of what was then known as “Hawkwind”. After some time, many adventures and experiences, these cosmic travelers became “The Masters of the Universe”, a title bestowed on them through their level of development attained by virtue of the good vibrations, positive creative energy and spirit generated by their collective consciousness, interaction and social endeavours. After many cosmic experiences together, the individual ‘Masters’ left the security of the ‘Hawkwind’ and went in search of their own personal ‘Holy Grail’. Throughout the depths of time and space they traveled, drawn to their own focal point. Their source, their eternal infinite image and reflection manifesting with their own individual ‘Crystal’. These they then strove to understand and learnt to control for the good of all things. At a certain point in time during their journeys, a group of them coalesced and, upon their return, were recognized and had bestowed upon them the title of ‘Star Masters’. They manifested by popular demand, psychic desire and the need to revive the magic thought to be lost, the true original spirit of the Hawkwind, of which the band were all part and remained ‘Keepers of the Flame’, of what is now ‘Space Ritual’. NIK TURNER – vocals, sax, flute Founder member of legendary space rock band 'Hawkwind', named after his nick-name (1969-1977). Wrote the seminal underground anthems 'Master of the Universe', 'Brainstorm', 'D-Rider' and was a driving force in the creation of the legend and mythology which created the band's success. -

The absent presence of progressive rock in the British music press, 1968-1974 Chris Anderton and Chris Atton Abstract The upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock has taken much for granted. In particular, little account has been taken of how discourses surrounding progressive rock were deployed in popular culture in the past, especially within the music press. To recover the historical place of the music and its critical reception, we present an analysis of three British weekly music papers of the 1960s and 1970s: Melody Maker, New Musical Express and Sounds. We find that there appears to be relatively little consensus in the papers studied regarding the use and meaning of the term ‘progressive’, pointing to either multiple interpretations or an instability of value judgments and critical claims. Its most common use is to signify musical quality – to connect readers with the breadth of new music being produced at that time, and to indicate a move away from the ‘underground’ scene of the late 1960s. 1 Introduction Beginning in the 1990s there has been an upsurge of academic interest in the genre known as progressive rock, with the appearance of book-length studies by Edward Macan (“Rocking”) and Bill Martin (“Music of Yes”, “Listening”), to which we might add, though not strictly academic, Paul Stump. The 2000s have seen further studies of similar length, amongst them Paul Hegarty & Martin Halliwell, Kevin Holm-Hudson (“Progressive”, “Genesis”) and Edward Macan (“Endless”), in addition to scholarly articles by Jarl A. Ahlkvist, Chris Anderton (“Many-headed”), Chris Atton (“Living”), Kevin Holm-Hudson “Apocalyptic”), and Jay Keister & Jeremy L.
