2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 1 2011-12 OUTLOOK

Steady and consistent improvement is the goal of any athletic squad, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team is no different. The Hawks will look to take advantage of a healthy blend of youth and experience to make the 2011-12 season a successful one. Last season, the squad finished eighth at the Atlantic 10 Championship, a step ahead of its ninth-place tie from the previous season. This year, the Hawks have their sights set on breaking through to the league’s upper echelon. “Our goal is to be as good, if not better,” than last year said head coach Ian Crookenden. “That means winning a quarterfinal match against one of the top four seeds, and to do that we’re going to have to be at the top of our games.” The fourth-year headman also wants to change the perception of his squad around the league; with respect comes improved seeding in the conference championship, but that respect is borne out of success on the court. “We have to have other coaches start to recognize that we are a much stronger team than they give us credit for,” Crookenden said. In order to do that, SJU will count on the leadership of seniors Peter Cognetti and Jeff Kessler and junior Tommy Gates to help guide the influx of young talent both on the court and off. “There’s a very good atmosphere around the squad,” Crookenden said. “There is no rivalry, aside from a friendly one; there is no divisive element that I’ve seen.” Junior Alex Veronis will return in the spring from a semester abroad and will inhabit his customary position in the top singles Alex Veronis will be SJU ’s top-flight singles player flight. 2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 4 SJUTENNISCOMPLEX

Opened in the fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s con- struction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the near- by Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were locat- ed where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

THE HAWK The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.
