The Day of June 4, 2017 10:00 a.m.

Celebrant The Right Reverend Thomas E. Breidenthal

Christ Church Cathedral The Diocese of Southern Ohio PENTECOST SUNDAY

¶ Please ask an usher about child care, large-print bulletins, and hearing-assistance devices. ¶ The People’s responses are in bold.

Organ Voluntary Veni Creator Spiritus Nicolas de Grigny (1672-1703) En taille à 5 Duo Dialogue sur les grands Jeux

Introit A mighty sound from heaven at Pentecost there came, and filled the place of meeting with rushing wind and flame: what Christ had promised now occurred as each Apostle spoke the word beneath the Spirit’s thunder, and to the ears of all proclaimed salvation’s wonder.

In Salem’s street was gathered a crowd from many a land and all in their own tongues did the Gospel understand: for by the triumph of the Son the curse of Babel was undone when God did send the Spirit; so to the Three in One be honor, praise and merit.

Then come, all Christian people, keep festival this day, for God the Holy Spirit dwells with the church alway: and grieve him not, O Christian soul, his grace within shall make you whole in body, mind and Spirit; to reach the promised goal, a kingdom to inherit. Pentecost Carol Text: George Timms (b. 1910), alt. Music: 17th century Dutch carol, arr. Richard Proulx (1937-2010)

Hymn at the Entrance 501 O Holy Spirit, by whose breath

The Acclamation and Collect

† Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God’s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and na- tion by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF THE LORD

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us,

3 in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopota- mia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and prose- lytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God de- clares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “ Acts 2:1-21 (NRSV) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gradual ¶ The choir sings the following refrain, then all repeat

Send forth your Spir - it, O Lord, and re - new the face of the earth.

O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. Refrain

4 All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. Refrain

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in all his works. He looks at the earth and it trembles; he touches the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. May these words of mine please him; I will rejoice in the Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Hallelujah! Psalm 104:25-35, 37 Refrain

A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utter- ance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all bap- tized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 (NRSV) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

5 The Holy † Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39 (NRSV) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Right Reverend Thomas E. Breidenthal

Presentation and Examination of the Candidates

The Candidate(s) will now be presented.

¶ Presenters I present these persons for Confirmation. (or) I present these persons to be received into this Communion.

¶ The continues. After all have been presented, the Bishop addresses the congregation, saying

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will.

¶ The Bishop then says these or similar words Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

¶ If the People have not been invited to stand, they stand now.

Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 6 Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

Let us now pray for these persons who have renewed their commitment to Christ.

Deliver them, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer.

Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer.

Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer.

7 Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer.

Teach them to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer.

Send them into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer.

Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you have made with them at their Baptism. Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

¶ The Bishop lays hands upon each one and says (For Confirmation) Strengthen, O Lord, your servant N. with your Holy Spirit; empower him for your ser- vice; and sustain him all the days of his life. Amen. (For Reception) N., we recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your ser- vants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

¶ The People reconcile with their neighbors and greet one another in the name of the Lord.

8 Anthem at the Offertory

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; thou the Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:

Thy blessèd unction from above As swimmers dare is comfort, life, and fire of love; to lie face to the sky enable with perpetual light and water bears them, the dullness of our blinded sight: as hawks rest upon air and air sustains them, Anoint and cheer our soilèd face so would I learn to attain with the abundance of thy grace: free fall, and float keep far our foes, give peace at home; into Creator Spirit’s deep embrace, where thou art guide no ill can come. knowing no effort earns Amen. that all-surrounding grace.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your bless- ing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, be- holding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing,

Ho - ly, ho - ly, ho - ly Lord, God of

pow - er and might, hea - ven and earth are full of your

glo - ry. Ho - san - na in the high -

est. † Bless-ed is he who comes in the name of the

10 ¶ The People stand or kneel. The Celebrant continues on page 373 in The .

...Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God.

¶ The Celebrant continues on page 373.

... Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and for ever.

A - MEN.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

¶ The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

¶ The cantor sings the refrain, then all repeat

The dis-ci -ples knew the Lord Je - sus in the break - ing of the bread.

The bread which we break, alleluia, is the communion of the body of Christ. Refrain

One body are we, alleluia, for though many we share one bread. Refrain

11 ¶ Facing the congregation, the Celebrant says an Invitation to Communion.

¶ All who are drawn to God’s table through the waters of baptism are welcome to re- ceive Holy Communion. When you come forward, the wafer will be placed in your palm. You may either consume the host immediately and then drink from the chalice, or hold the host and lightly dip it in the wine when it is offered. If you wish to receive a blessing instead of communion, cross your arms over your chest, and the priest will bless you. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please make your need known to the minister.

Music at the Communion

Listen sweet Dove unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing, and flie away with thee.

Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow, That th’earth did like a heav’n appeare; The starres were coming down to know If they might mend their wages, and serve here.

The sunne, which once did shine alone, Hung down his head, and wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one Going about the world, and giving light.

Lord, though we change, thou art the same; The same sweet God of love and light: Restore this day, for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right.
