12 sept 2013 www.aant.com.au 13 used car review motoring Ask an expert… I don’t use my car much anymore, will Ford Fiesta this affect the life of my battery? 2007 Although modern technology has improved the average lifespan of car batteries, there are still some factors that may limit how long a battery can last.

When a vehicle’s driven regularly, its charging system maintains a good level of charge in the battery; when the car’s not being used much, the battery will gradually discharge, until it loses its ability to start the vehicle. How quickly this occurs will depend on factors like temperature, humidity and electrical drain being placed on the battery.

When a battery spends long periods of time in a state of low charge, a chemical reaction called sulphation occurs, causing the battery to resist recharging. This can eventually cause permanent deterioration and can shorten the life cycle.

A good-quality, fully automated battery charger can be used to help maintain the battery when a vehicle sits idle for long periods of time.
