ALABAMA STATE 24 SAVANNAH STATE 0 MONTGOMERY—The Alabama State University defense had not recorded a shutout since a 35-0 win over Alabama A&M during the 2001 season. That changed today as the ASU defense held Savannah State to only 167 total yards as the Hornets broke a three-game losing streak with a 24-0 win over the Tigers.

The Hornets’ offense may have struggled over the course of the game, but the defense did not. ASU held a 7-0 lead at halftime despite out gaining the visi- tors 197-65 in total yards.

Anything that could go wrong did for ASU in the first half. Nick Andrews opened the game with a 90 yard kickoff return to give ASU a first-and-goal on the eight yard line. After two bad snaps and a three yard rush the Hornets were forced to kick a field goal from the 30 yard line. Another bad snap resulted in the miss and ASU missed out on a chance for a score.

ASU went on to suffer through eight penalties during the opening period and had a couple of dropped passes before Dominguez hit Nick Andrews from eight yards out to give the Hornets their 7-0 lead.

The second half looked to be like the first, as ASU was able to drive down to the SSU 24 yard line, but again Andrews missed a field goal and ASU only led 7-0.

It was ASU’s defense that set up the next Hornet touchdown as they stopped SSU on a fourth-and-five play late in the third quarter and set the offense up on the ASU 34 yard line.

From there the offense had their best drive of the day, a 66-yard drive that was completed when Dominguez hit Landon Jones from 12 yards out. The PAT gave ASU a 14-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

The defense did score the next points as Jacques Rickerson stepped in front of a Antonio Bostick pass and returned it 59 yards for a score and a 21-0 lead.

The Hornets got their final points of the game on a 36-yard field goal from Lyons with 5:12 left in the game.

Dominguez, who has struggled in the past few games, completed 18 of his 27 pass attempts for 269 yards and two scores.

ASU finished the game with 334 total yards, but continue to struggle running the ball, as they only rushed for 50 yards on 29 attempts. Quendarious McK- ibbon led the team with 21 yards on 12 carries.

Jordan McFadden had a big game receiving. He caught three passes for 91 yards. Andrews finished with 55 yards on five catches including one for a score.

Anthony Speight did a good job punting during the game. He only averaged 33 yards per punt, but three of his kicks were downed inside the 20 yard line.

Jimmy Daniels had a solid outing on defense for ASU. He finished with eight stops from his defensive line position. Three of those stops were tackles for lost yardage, including a sack. Brandon Roberts also finished with eight tackles and KeJuan Riley had seven stops.

Ray Heningburg had a fumble recovery and Marcus Solomon had an inter- ception to go along with Rickerson’s interception.

The Hornets move to 4-3 overall while Savannah State falls to 0-8. ASU will travel to Birmingham next week to face Alabama A&M University in the 69th edition of the Magic City Classic. The kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. 2010 BAMA STATE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
