The Story of Dennis George – Section 2 By Stephenie Tanguay Arizona Time Dennis and Randy decided Scottsdale, Arizona should be their destination. The pair justified the choice to Barb citing the location’s connotation of exclusivity and warm weather. “It wasn’t very hard,” remembers Corley. “It was December or January in Canada. The temperature was well below zero.” The trip south was arduous. “We stopped for one night in Las Vegas on the way to Arizona,” Corley says with a nickel of naughtiness. “I had a phony ID, so I could gamble.” While trying to settle on a business name, Dennis found inspiration in the bacon section of the local grocery store. “There were about 20 different types of bacon, but the one that stood out to me was Bar S,” he says. The year was 1971. At the age of 27, Dennis George founded G Bar G Bronc Saddles in Scottsdale, Arizona with the help of a silent partner from Denver, the other G in G Bar G. “Originally, it was G-G, but I changed it to G Bar G because it was too hard to explain it on the phone,” Dennis clarifies. Dennis, Barb and the kids moved into a small apartment. The only affordable area zoned for the shop was in the river bottom between Scottsdale and Tempe. For two years Dennis worked diligently, building the bronc saddle business. Image reproduced with permission of Gene Hyder The Story of Dennis George, Section 2, Page 1 “When I was building bareback riggings and bronc saddles, there was many, many times, because I was down in Scottsdale and it was so hot, I would work in the shop until 2 o’clock in the morning.

  • Tuff Hedeman
TUFF HEDEMAN TUFF HEDEMAN Before he even started school, Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman earned (literally) the nickname that would stick with him for life. According to Tuff, Tater Decker, a horse trainer and friend of the Hedeman family, began to call him “Tough Nut” after he slammed the boy‟s hand in the door of his pick-up. As the story goes, young Tuff never shed the first tear. “I was about 4 or 5 years old,” remembers Hedeman, “when he slammed my hand in the door. He nicknamed me „Tough Nut‟ and it was later shortened to Tuff.” So began the life of a legend. Hedeman grew up on the racetracks of west Texas, but quickly realized his true calling; the rodeo. As a boy, he won many junior rodeos and, in 1980, took the New Mexico High School Rodeo Bull Riding and All Around titles. His success continued the following year, when he was awarded the Team Roping and All Around titles. Upon graduation, Tuff attended Sul Ross State University, where he was a member of the rodeo team, competing in bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling and, of course, bull riding. In 1983, Tuff turned pro and filled out his PRCA permit as a bronc rider. He developed a reputation for riding bulls that had never been ridden, with an all-or-nothing style that amazed rodeo fans. He often traveled with his fellow bull riders (and close friends) Lane Frost, Cody Lambert, Jim Sharp, Clint Branger and Ty Murray, to save on travel expenses. Over his career, he would qualify for 11 NFRs, winning two NFR titles.

The Legacy of Benny Binion The Binion Family are proud to sponsor the 2013 Benny Binion’s World Famous Bucking Horse and Bull Sale in honor of Benny Binion. Hopefully the Legacy of Benny Binion will live on in Las Vegas and in the world of rodeo, as he was instrumental in bringing the National Finals Rodeo to Las Vegas in 1985. With the move came a large increase in the cowboy’s purse and fees paid to the stock contractors for bucking horses and bulls. Not only was this a boost to Benny’s cowboy friends, but a boost to Las Vegas, as the WNFR has become one of the top tickets in sports and one of Las Vegas most prestigious and lucrative two weeks of the year. The Binion family are proud of Benny Binion’s accomplishments in promoting rodeo and Las Vegas. The Binion Family are pleased a portion of the proceeds from this sale go to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in which Benny Binion was honored by being inducted in 1988 in the company of so many friends, heroes and rodeo greats (including Granddaughter Mindy’s husband Clint Johnson, World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider, inducted in 1992). Please visit the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and see 100 years of the colorful history of rodeo and the spirit of the cowboys are preserved there.

  • 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend Postponed
DRAFT September 17, 2020 Contact: Seth Spillman, Chief Marketing Officer [email protected] (Office) (405) 478-2250 ext. 269 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend Postponed Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2020, along with 2020 Tad Lucas Memorial Award and Ben Johnson Memorial Award recipients, to be honored in 2021 OKLAHOMA CITY — In support of the nationwide effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Rodeo Historical Society (RHS) will postpone the 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend. Originally scheduled for November 13–14, 2020, a decision on when the event will be rescheduled in 2021 is still to be determined. Updates will be posted on the Museum and RHS website at nationalcowboymuseum.org/rhs. “We continue to be creative and flexible in how we approach events in 2020, but given the size and logistics of Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend, we believe the best decision is to postpone until circumstances allow us to properly honor these very deserving inductees and award winners,” said Natalie Shirley, Museum president. The 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend inductees were chosen via popular vote by RHS membership. Inductees in both the Living and Deceased categories, as well as the Tad Lucas Memorial Award and Ben Johnson Memorial Award recipients, includes: LIVING - Ricky Bolin - Bobby W. “Hooter” Brown - Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman - Cody Lambert - Jerome Robinson - Bobby and Sid Steiner (father and son) DECEASED - John (1887 – 1973) and Thomas (1915 – 1981) Rhodes (father and son) - Jim W. Snively (1911 – 1998) In addition, each year the family of trick-riding legend Tad Lucas bestows the Tad Lucas Memorial Award upon a living female whose actions promote the values represented by Tad Lucas, while the Ben Johnson Memorial Award winner is chosen by committee each year to honor a living individual who represents the Western lifestyle as exemplified by screen and rodeo legend Ben Johnson.
