Letter from Reverend Hilary

Why go to church? Ask any churchgoer why they go to church, and you will get a variety of responses along the lines of enjoying worship (maybe ‘with like-minded people’) and faith and convictions giving a sense of satisfaction from attendance. It seems to me however that why we go comes down to it being for the sake of others – regardless of what we gain personally. Yes, there is that encouraging heart-warming social interaction as we catch up with friends and neighbours, but it is more. At a time when our country is in the midst of considerable political confusion, conflicts such as those in the Middle East destabilize peace and news on the impact of climate change unnerve even the most unflappable amongst us – there are important messages to inform our concerns and our praying. Firstly – we are fortunate to have enjoyed relative calm and social stability over many decades. The Remembrance services in November last year reminded us how this reality is not rock solid but fragile and precarious. Secondly – whatever political and economic factors affect the behaviour of people dedicated to violence – the underlying causes are psychological and spiritual. Recognising that there is bad religion (not just current distortions of authentic Islam but of Christianity too), there also exists an ‘easy-going unthinkingness’ of a great many that profess no religion, which in itself is detrimental to the spiritual energy of the human race. Adhering to a faith built on goodness, those of us committed to churchgoing find ourselves praying for others through prayers of intercession – a key part of worship. Committed prayer is needed more when the news is dire (hence the time set apart in March to pray for our Brexit situation or last year following the fatal traffic accident in the village). Like with a sporting event it is more satisfactory to go and be with others in a corporate act rather than engage in a solitary spiritual exercise. Following the horrendous shootings at the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, though many prayed at home, many others chose to gather to share in acts of togetherness with brothers and sisters across the faiths and of none. continued overleaf ...

5

At the end of May (between the Christian feasts of Ascension and Pentecost) starts nine days set aside for prayer. Going back over the centuries, this renewed tradition is highlighted by the Church of as ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. There is plenty online promoting this. Opportunities to renew your commitment to corporate prayer beyond the Sunday services will come on Monday 3rd June at 8.30am and on Wednesday 5th at 10.15am. Do come along, and if unable to do so, write your prayer petitions in the notebook at the back of St. Bartholomew’s or email them to me for inclusion at that time. To my mind there is no doubt that our distracted world needs prayerful togetherness in corporate worship. That is why I go to church.

Women’s Christian Fellowship ... Our speaker in March, Mrs Kathy Butler, gave a very inspirational talk on her life, which has been spent volunteering in many different ways. Kathy's story had a very sad beginning, at home and at school, until she was introduced to the Salvation Army and at the age of fourteen was volunteering at a soup kitchen in London. Marriage at eighteen and two children followed, but sadly her second son was very ill as a baby and during her many visits to hospital, she decided to train as a Play Therapist to try and give the children a better quality of life. Her work took her to Guy’s and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. When her children were older and with her son improving, she started helping the R.S.P.C.A caring for puppies and rehoming older dogs. This continued quite happily until Kathy read an article about Home Start, a charity that helps young vulnerable families and who were needing a supervisor. Kathy loved this job and trained many others over the twenty eight years she was with them. Animals reappeared in her life again for a short while, this time rehoming kittens. Working for Age Concern was next but sadly Kathy broke her hip in an accident and has not recovered enough to continue, but never one to do nothing, she has now retrained in foot care for the elderly, visiting many who are housebound. A truly inspirational lady. Our next meeting is at 2.30pm on Wednesday 22nd May when we will have a talk entitled "The Witches of Elizabethan " by the author Kate Cole. Do come and give us a try. Rainbow Field and the Sports Fields ...

Due to some inaccurate information last month’s article has been amended and reproduced. Many of you will know Rainbow Field, Great Totham Road. The BHSA provide and maintain Rainbow Field to enable dogs and dog walkers to exercise there. It is working well and appreciated by many. Sadly, in January, a toddler fell into a pile of dog mess. The mother was greatly distressed as a consequence, as I am sure anybody would be had it happened to them. Such incidents also pose a health risk. Please do remember to pick up after your dog as regrettably some owners still seem unable to do this. As a reminder the relevant section of regulations has been reproduced - The Fouling of Land by Dogs (District of Maldon) Order 2008. ‘If a dog defecates at any time on land to which this Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces from the land forthwith, that person shall be guilty of an offence. This can lead to a fine up to £1000.’ Many thanks from Beacon Hill Sports Association.

Wickham Bishops Women’s Institute ... At our March meeting the speaker was Kay Beighton who came to teach us the art of Belly Dancing for Beginners! It was very interesting to learn how belly dancing came from Turkey way back in Roman times, and later from India. Kay brought along some of her costumes and some of us donned jewelled scarves and proceeded to shake and wiggle, much to the amusement of our members! Our competition was for a favourite scarf and also a silly/funny card in readiness for our group meeting with Heybridge. For our meeting in April we will welcome Sharon Flowers with a talk entitled 'How to Repair or Make Absolutely Anything in Fabric'. And in May we are holding a ploughman's lunch followed by our AGM. Our meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month in the Church Hall from 2.00pm - 4.00pm, and we are always pleased to welcome visitors and new members. For further information please contact our secretary Sharon O'Connell 01621 891631.

Wickham Bishops “Over 60’s” Club ... An enjoyable afternoon with a quiz organised by Jo followed by our usual tea and biscuits by courtesy of Chris. As we had time to spare, Jo presented another quiz and when she called out the answers, it caused much merriment. Kaye also read us a poem which was funny. Our outing this month is to The Barns Garden Centre and Cafe in Turkey Cock Lane, Stanway, on the 23rd . The competition winners for anything beginning with the letter ‘A’: 1st Jose Cass with an angel, 2nd Audrey Orchard with an apron and 3rd Janet Bentley with allspice. Well done everyone - see you all next month. Win Lawrence

Wickham Bishops Garden Festival

14th June 2020 Building on our long tradition of “Open Gardens” the new Garden Festival is set to thrill and excite the village in 2020 Many innovative new ideas will ensure that 2020 could be the best “Open Gardens” event ever in our village and we are now offering the opportunity for new participants to join the fun. This bi-annual event raises money to maintain and repair our beautiful village church and has proved extremely popular over many years. We are looking for a small number of new gardens to open on the day and the organising committee will provide advice and support to ensure that your participation is both enjoyable and successful. Large, small, quirky or just plain interesting? Yes - your garden will certainly fit the bill. As a bonus, the committee has arranged for all next year’s participating gardens to be photographed by a gardening specialist, as a legacy for the future.

For an informal chat about what opening your garden is really all about, call:

1st Beacon Hill Scouts ... has been in existence for over 60 years and has always been a very successful and popular scout group. We have Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and it is only possible to maintain these sections with the dedication and enthusiasm of the leaders and helpers who volunteer their time. We currently have three scout leaders, two of whom will be leaving the group at the end of the summer term, due to work changes. Our third leader has agreed to stay for another year to aid, hopefully, a seamless handover, plus he genuinely enjoys it. He is our resident paramedic and experienced leader but is unable to head the section as his work shift patterns means he is only able to help every other week. Leading Scouts can be challenging – it can also be brilliant fun, very rewarding and fulfilling, just knowing that you’re helping the people who are our future. We do not want this section to have to close, but we do need at least two people to come forward to volunteer. No previous experience is necessary and you would be supported by the rest of the Beacon Hill team/leaders and any training needed would be given. If you think you would be able to volunteer, please contact me on [email protected] or via www.1stbeaconhill.org.uk or 01621 893060 for a chat or more information.

Great Totham Women’s Institute ... On Friday 22nd March some of our members attended the County Annual Meeting at the Charter Hall, Colchester, in the company of hundreds of WI members from around Essex. We heard from Reverend Richard Coles, who talked about his life and somewhat unorthodox route to ordination. We also listened to two very informative and moving speakers; the President of The Brentwood Belles WI and the daughter of former County Chairman, Pat Pratley, talking about ‘Mental Health Matters’. In the afternoon we were royally entertained by the ABBA Rivals group, who got the audience tapping their feet. Our WI is part of the Viking Group of five WI’s and on Wednesday 3rd April we met together at Little Baddow Memorial Hall for our Spring Meeting. The speaker on this occasion was David Webb who, together with his twin brother, appeared in the sit-com ’Hi-di-hi’. We heard about how he began in the business and the events leading up to him joining the cast. After refreshments, the Burlesque Bombshells, a sub-group from Marconi Belles in Chelmsford, kept us all entertained ‘in the best possible taste’! On the morning of April 11th we accepted an invitation for coffee and cakes at Forrester Park where members from Wickham Bishops and Goldhanger also joined us. In the evening we held our own AGM and elected the new committee for the coming twelve months. The programme for next year is again very varied, with something for everyone. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings, held on the second Thursday of the month in Great Totham Village Hall. Information is on the website www.greattothamwi.weebly.com or email [email protected]

Men’s Assembly … A select few visited The Green Man for our April meeting, and spent a pleasant evening, discussing many topics as well as sinking a few pints and enjoying delicious filled baguettes with chips. The meeting in May is scheduled for Wednesday 8th from 8 pm onwards, at The Prince of Wales in Great Totham and all local men are invited to join us - no rules, no membership forms to fill-in, just £10 on the night to include two drinks and some top-notch bar snacks. For more details please contact Lester Firkins on 01621 892913 or by email: [email protected]

Kate Luard: Life After WW1 ...

A note from the Editor: During the past few years, I have occasionally included articles about Kate Evelyn Luard in this magazine. Kate, (or Evie as her family called her) served with the Army Nursing Service Reserve during the Boer War and in France in the First World War. She was one of only a tiny number of women to be awarded a Bar to her Royal Red Cross. A few of our older residents still remember Kate and her two sisters, as they retired to Wickham Bishops in about 1930. Her memory is kept alive by her great-nephew, Tim Luard, and great-niece, Caroline Stevens, to whom I am grateful for this article.

Kate Luard left France on 28 November 1918, resigning from the nursing service so that she could return home to look after her ailing father. Following his death on 28 January 1919, she resumed her role as Matron of the Berks & Bucks County Sanatorium but was clearly restless. Her age, she was by now almost 50, was making it difficult for her to secure a senior hospital position. She was then appointed to the South London Hospital for Women. Her last position as a nurse was as Lady Matron at Bradfield College in Berkshire.

Extracts from the Bradfield College obituary and letter from an OB:

At Bradfield she inspired complete confidence in masters and parents alike, though would- be malingerers received short shift but the genuine patient received every sympathy and learned too the full benefit of her great experience and skill. To be brought to her shocked after some accident was to know all the reassurance given by devotion, Bradfield College, founded 1850 An early photograph gentleness and efficiency.

Gradually her back became more troublesome and she retired in December 1930. She then returned to Essex sharing a home, “Abbotts” in Wickham Bishops with her two sisters G (Georgina) and Rose.

She continued to travel whenever she could and never without her sketchbook. With her brother Percy she toured the battlefields on the Western Abbotts, Wickham Bishops, 1933 and Eastern Fronts.

16

With the Canon of St Albans she set up nursing homes for returning troops.

Amongst other activities she was on the committees of both the Anti-Gas Demonstrations 1936 and the Air Raid Precautions 1938.

Gradually her back became more troublesome and she had to abandon local activities and the garden which was her joy. She retired from being Commandant of the Essex 24 Women’s Detachment (Witham and Kelvedon) of the British Red Cross Society in 1940 and was made a life vice- president of the BRCS. Air Raid Precaution information WW2

In time she became increasingly incapacitated and finally bedridden. To the end she retained a close interest in Bradfield and nothing gave her more pleasure than a letter or visit from someone connected with the school. She also enjoyed the visits and support of her surviving siblings and her nieces, nephews and friends.

She died, aged 90, on 16 August 1962. Her grave and headstone are in St Bartholomew’s churchyard, Wickham Bishops, alongside those of her sisters G and Rose.

Comment from a local historian:

“… and there lies KEL, a remarkable person, quietly resting in a country churchyard with some of her siblings, with no great pomp. Quintessentially English to my way of thinking.”

Update on the Library ...

Thank you to the many people who have volunteered to help run our library as a community hub, to offer not only book lending but also many other social activities for the benefit of local people. As public bodies such as the NHS and local councils continue to be hard- pressed for funds for social welfare and support, we feel that it is important to preserve a centre in the village where small groups can meet, often informally, to share experiences and interests. Maldon Council have an aim to reduce social isolation and projects such as this can help with that. Although many volunteers will not actually be needed until the community takes over from Essex County Council, probably early next year (assuming that we do), it is an essential part of our developing business plan to be able to show a high-level of community support. Our local MP, Priti Patel, met with members of the Library Working Group recently and affirmed her support. In particular, she has promised to press Essex CC to give priority to the community should the decision be taken to sell the building. To this end, there will be a need for some serious fund-raising, both from charitable bodies and our residents. A preliminary survey has been carried out on the building. The results of this is that the library is basically structurally sound with just a few problems with damp in a couple of places. The old toilet area at the back of the building would need substantial work in order to bring it back into use. The Working Group are looking into the possibility of starting some social groups whilst the library is still being run by Essex CC. This would entail a cost as the building would have to be hired, and there could be a problem with insufficient tables and chairs, but groups such as a Scrabble Club, Computing and Foreign Language classes, History Research Club or Reminiscence Tea-Time could be formed and would help to demonstrate the viability of the Centre. If you would be interested in any of these or have other similar ideas, please get in touch via the email link below. [email protected]

From the Parish Council … The Council held a General meeting on the 2nd April and a Planning Committee meeting on the 12th April. The minutes of both meetings can be read on the Parish Council website which is www.wickhambishopsparishcouncil.org Elections are being held for Parish and District Councillors within the , with Polling Day being Thursday May 2nd. In Wickham Bishops, the Parish Council was returned uncontested, so your Parish Councillors are: Henry Bass, Peter Bates, Karl Jarvis, Iain MacGregor, Mandy Mickelsen, Richard Mundell, Stephen Nicholas, Ian Wardrop and Jane Williams. There are five candidates for two seats on Maldon District Council, so we would encourage residents to vote on May 2nd. Several residents have complained about drivers causing an obstruction by parking on the pavements, particularly in Kelvedon Road and Wellands. Whilst this is not an offence (except in London and Exeter), it causes difficulty for people in wheelchairs or parents accompanied by young children. Please be considerate when you park. The next meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday 7th May at the earlier time of 7.00 pm. This will be the Statutory Annual Meeting which is, in effect the AGM of the Council, where the chairman is elected and the vice-chairman and committee members are appointed. This meeting will be followed, at 8.30 pm, by the Annual Parish Assembly which is a public meeting where parishioners can discuss any issues connected with our village. We hope to include an update on the future of the Village Library and the Neighbourhood Plan Team would like to hear residents’ views on the proposed ‘Green Spaces’ in the village plan (either side of Handleys Lane and behind the Church Field). Please attend this meeting if you can. Both meetings will be held in the Village Hall and agenda will be published on the council website before the meetings. We have been informed that Blacksmith’s Lane will be closed for approximately one week from 29th April, between The Street and Arbour Lane, to allow for connection work to the ‘Pine Trees’ site. Spring Lane will also be closed from the same date to allow for resurfacing work. A quick reminder that the annual litter pick will take place on Saturday 27th April, starting at 1.00 pm from the library car park - all volunteers are welcome! Councillors may be contacted individually, or via the Parish Clerk on 07542 190176, or by email [email protected]

Keukenhof near Amsterdam is renowned as the “World’s Finest” spring garden. A big claim indeed, so 27 members of the village Horticultural Club popped over to find out for themselves. Well it proved so good that only 25 returned to the UK! This garden is huge and spectacular. Everyone enjoyed their trip, helped by terrific weather. Mind you everyone enjoyed their long weekend in Amsterdam as well but the less said about that the better! Keukenhof obviously specialises in tulips but they also had a huge array of other plants especially fields full of incredibly perfumed hyacinths. Overall a garden that justifies it’s claims and well worth visiting Holland to see. However, the Horticultural Club now has to visit a few thousand more spring gardens around the world in order to make a proper comparison. Fancy joining us? We have been asked to run the plant stall at the Church Summer Fayre on Saturday 8th June. All contributions of plants and other garden- related items would be welcomed. The Fayre starts at noon, so please bring any items to the Church field in the morning. Our next talk will be on Wednesday 15th May at 7.30 pm in the Church Hall. Our guest speaker will be Paul Harrison talking about ‘The Very Best 50 Small Trees for Small Spaces’. This will be Paul’s third visit to us and he was much appreciated on his previous two. Visitors are welcome to come along for a glass of wine and some good company. For more details please email [email protected] or telephone Stewart on 893360.

Many thanks to Stewart and Wendy Wallace for the report on the Keukenhof trip and the beautiful photograph on the front cover.

Year 5 – Mayan Experience Day

On Monday 11th March, a descendant of the Mayans came to teach us all about this civilisation, and his name was Big Nose. Big Nose taught us lots of amazing information about the Maya, like how they sacrificed and why.

He also showed us how to count to ten in Mayan; oo, car, ash, can, o wak, uk, washat, balong, la-oon.

Big Nose brought in some Mayan chocolate, 90% cocoa! There were also some raw cocoa beans that 12 daring people tasted, as well as the teachers. He told us the story of how the Mayans believed that the world was created, and we all took part.

Big Nose also gave us information cards, and we got to perform a drama scene. As well as that, he brought in loads of brilliant artefacts that we all got to sketch. We really enjoyed the day. Written by Sophie, Y5
