Third-year Temple University men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy has been involved in many communtity service activities in his over 30 years in collegiate coaching. Dunphy has been a major contributor of his time and energy to the American Cancer Society through Coaches vs. Cancer. He has spearheaded the local efforts of the six Division I coaches that have led to raising over $1 million to benefit the American Cancer Society. Named the Coaches vs. Cancer National Coach of the Year for his efforts, Dunphy has helped to steer events in the area such as the Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Outing; the Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall; coordinated open practices with the six area teams and holding a March Madness Breakfast to raise awareness for the cause. He was honored in 2008 as a local hero by Bank of America for his role with Coaches vs. Cancer.

Dunphy’s Owls were one of three teams to Walk for the Cure at the start of the 2007-08 season with over 1000 students taking part in the Walk held on October 19 in conjuction with Cherry and White Night. The team took part in the Walk for the Cure again on October 24.

Another cause that Dunphy champions is Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The Owl coach devotes his time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia by serving on the organziation’s Board of Directors. His Penn teams participated in Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs each year during his tenure at the school. His Temple teams have been actively participating in the program the past two seasons.

Dunphy is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame.

Allen made eight of nine shots, including 76-70, at University Arena Tuesday evening. Brooks, who struggled early on to keep WMU guard three highlight reel dunks, en route to a team-high 18 points. He also pulled down a game-high David Kool (30 points) in check, had seven of his points in the decisive 16-2 second half run that 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and dished four assists. For the third time in five games the turned a 50-46 deficit to a 62-52 lead. The 6-4 senior guard matched his career high with 10 Cherry and White held an opponent to 50 or fewer points. Temple also frustrated Hokie shoot- rebounds, and recorded his second career double-double. Kennedy came down to make it 41-33. GAME 9 • TEMPLE 64, MIAMI 42 MILLETT HALL • DECEMBER 8, 2009 An explosive first half led by junior Lavoy Allen and the senior duo of Luis Guzman and Ryan Brooks propelled Temple to a 64-42 victory over Miami. The trio combined for 29 first-half points, moving the Owls to 7-2 on the season, the program's best start since 1994-95. A 25-0 run, highlighted by four treys from Guzman (12 points) – three-straight at one point, gave the Owls a commanding 30-6 lead with 7:49 left in the first half. A smooth jump-hook from Allen (15 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts) started the scoring barrage, with the junior hitting three more deuces for eight first half points. The Temple defense stifled Miami, holding the RedHawks scoreless for nearly 10 minutes in the opening stanza. Junior Nick Winbush (10 pts, 10 rebs.) hit a jumper from long- range at 6:37 upped the RedHawks point total for the first time since the 16-minute mark. Beating the buzzer, TU’s Brooks (9 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts) drained a two sending the Owls into halftime lead- ing 36-16.
