David Hare : Skylight before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Skylight:

The first play I read by him was "," a brilliant and scathing account of the major political players in the Bush II administration in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq (Colin Powell is the tragic figure of the play). From there, I moved onto "Skylight." While there were dozens of characters in "Stuff Happens," there are only 3 in this one. But the meat of the play revolves around two former lovers - a 50 year old recently widower and a 30 year old teacher - they haven't seen each other in a few years. There are great speeches about why one shouldn't watch the news and how social workers do jobs that no one else would take or handle. There are bits of sexism and classism woven in, but not in a preachy sort of way. It all takes place over about 12 hours, and the events go very much true to life.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy BackpackerDavid hare at his best.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Everyone should read it.By CustomerAbsolutely the best play. I've read it for 6 times at least. There're a lot of great monologues in it. And it has so many layers in it. It's about romantic relationship but most of all it's about politics. Just want to know why it's called Skylight despite the fact that it has something to do with Alice.

Skylight premiered at the National Theatre in 1995 and then went on to become one of the most internationally successful plays of recent years. This is the definitive edition of Skylight.

“The play of the decade.” ?Spectator“A magnificent chamber play by one of the few major playwrights in our language. Quite unlike his "social" trilogy [, , ], Hare is here dealing with gentler matters of life, love and circumstance...Skylight might well one day take its place among the small, residual handful of fin de siecle classics.” ?New York Post“There are times in the theatre when you suddenly find yourself in the grip of silence. There is no fidgeting or coughing no shifting about in seats: the audience's attention is so tense, it is almost palpable. This is because it can sense that what is happening on the stage is both thrilling and dangerous: a fight to the death, or the dawning of salvation. David Hare's new play, Skylight, is punctuated by such moments. They are the signs that a dramatist of the first rank is writing at full stretch, in complete command of his material, undogmatic and unafraid, unforgiving but compassionate.” ?Sunday TimesAbout the AuthorDavid Hare was born in Sussex in 1947. He is the author of twenty-nine plays for the stage, seventeen of which have been seen at the National Theatre. These include , The Secret Rapture, Amy's View, , and . His many screenplays for cinema and television include Damage, The Hours and The Reader. He recently wrote and directed a trilogy of films for the BBC: , Turks Caicos and .
