I’m drawn to good stories—especially stories which come from the past but are relevant to the present—and as an orchestral composer, I’m intrigued by the potential of the orchestra as a storytelling medium. Of course, orchestral music cannot tell stories in a literal way, but its ability to suggest scenes and emotions, and evoke responses in listeners, has challenged and stimulated composers for centuries. My fascination with the story of the Titanic led me to choose that as the subject of an early orchestral work, and considering the plight of that vessel’s third-class passengers—humble European immigrants bound for America—led me to think more broadly about early twentieth-century American immigration. America is a nation of immigrants, and our immigrant history is a profound part of our American mythology. In the history of American immigration, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are icons of immense significance. In the years of its operation, from 1892 to 1954, more than twelve million immigrants, over 70% of all immigrants to the United States, passed through Ellis Island, the processing station which was “the gateway to America.” Today, more than 40% of the U.S.

Since its founding in 1952, MTI has been responsible for supplying scripts and musical materials to theatres worldwide and for protecting the rights and legacy of the authors whom it represents. It has been a driving force in cultivating new work and in extending the production life of some of the classics: Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Annie, Of Thee I Sing, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Damn Yankees, The Music Man, Evita, and the complete musical theatre works of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatres and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. MTI shows have been performed by 30,000 amateur and professional theatrical organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in over 60 countries around the world. Whether it’s at a high school in Kansas, by an all-female troupe in Japan or the first production of West Side Story ever staged in Estonia, productions of MTI musicals involve over 10 million people each year. Although we value all our clients, the twelve thousand high schools who perform our shows are of particular importance, for it is at these schools that music and drama educators work to keep theatre alive in their community.

And the Winner is Olympia Dukakis Elaine Thomopoulos In 1988, the year that Olympia Dukakis won the Academy Award for best supporting actress as Rose Castorini in Moonstruck, “Dukakis” became a household word. Looking confident and beautiful in a sparkling, lacy black dress, Olympia held her Oscar up high, saying “Okay, Michael. Let’s go!” referring to her cousin Michael Dukakis, who had put in his bid for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. The Dukakis clan had made it in America, but that journey had been difficult. The details and culture embodied in that journey had a profound effect on the sensibility Olympia Dukakis had brought to her work in theater and film. The Journey In 1914, the Dukakis family had fled Turkey to escape certain death at the hands of the Young Turks. Constantine, Olympia’s father, and his sister fled with their parents after their father had been warned that they would be slaughtered if they remained. Michael Dukakis’s father and two other brothers had already left to avoid conscription in the Turkish army. The Dukakis family settled in Lowell, Massachusetts, the textile mill town. Lowell was where Constantine Dukakis met Alexandra Christos, Olympia Dukakis’s mother. The Christos family also had experienced hardship. Alexandra Christos came to Lowell with her family from a poor village in Mani, Greece in 1907 when she was six, the youngest of seven children. In 1925, before she got married, Alexandra lost all but two of her seven siblings in an automobile accident. Shortly afterwards, her father and mother died.
