Apologies: We have recently been experiencing problems with YouTube. Our apologies as we are still trying to sort this.

During this lockdown Fr. Mike will be saying mass but not publicly so if people do wish to have masses said please let him know. All funerals and planning of weddings please contact Fr. Mike. There are no baptisms just now. Confessions are only in urgent cases. The same with Anointing of the Sick. (see below)

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: There are restrictions on what the priest can do (he is not tied down to everything as he is regarded as a front line worker by the government). To go to a sick person involves a lot of “before” and “after” prepa- ration. He is not allowed to touch the sick person but anoints with a cotton bud with fresh oil blessed in- dividually each time and disposed of separately. He has to use apron, mask and gloves. Afterwards he has to sanitise the pyx (the box that carries the host), any booklets he used and also his car when he returns. He must also change his clothes and wash them or not use for many days. However, please note someone in serious danger of dying he would try to attend but please try and notify him with as much warning as possible because of all the preparation involved.

“ When we read the Gospel by ourselves with an open heart, a little of its light and beneficial power always reaches us, enlightening, healing, consoling. #GospelOfTheDay M k 1 : 2 1 - 28 ”

This simple aid to prayer has been popularised by , and it’s perfect for kids. Try this: Using an old glove, write key words on each finger to help your child remember the five parts of the prayer.

1. The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the persons easiest to remember. To pray for our dear ones is a “sweet obligation.” 2. The next finger is the index finger. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you, and heal you. They need God’s help as they offer direction for others. 3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our government leaders and others who have authority. They need God’s guidance. 4. The fourth finger is the ring finger, which is also our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest among us - the sick, the poor, those excluded from society, and those plagued by other problems. And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the other four groups, you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way.

“God is not indifferent. He does not look away from our human pain. The God of mercy responds and takes care of the poor, of those who cry out in desperation. God listens and intervenes in order to save, raising men able to hear the groan of suffering and to work in favour of the oppressed.” - (Pope Francis, General Audience, 26 January 2016) More at:

Scottish Laity Network- Lenten Journey 2021

Discipleship for Artisans of our own Destiny ~ Preparing the Future The core vision of the Scottish Laity Network is that of enabling Scottish laity to come together as disciples of Jesus, and through prayer, dialogue and discernment find ‘new ways’ of being Church in Scotland in the 21st Century. Rooted in that vision we seek to reflect on the ‘signs of the times’ as revealed through COVID-19 and the Climate Emergency and, through the promptings of the Spirit, discern how we are called to respond.

Signs of our Times – COVID-19 and Climate Emergency Last March Pope Francis, standing alone in on the steps of St Peter’s, meditated on the calming of the storm from the Gospel of Mark. He identified the thick darkness that COVID-19 had brought to humanity and yet in the midst of that darkness, in the midst of fear and uncertainty he felt there was a seed of hope emerging. We have realized that we are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and needed, all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other. On this boat… are all of us. Just like those disciples, who spoke anxiously with one voice, saying “We are perishing” (v. 38), so we too have real- ized that we cannot go on thinking of ourselves, but only together can we do this.i But for this seed to grow and bear fruit Pope Francis stated it is ‘a time to choose what matters’ a time to embrace ‘new forms of hospitality, fraternity and solidarity’. The COVID-19 commission, created by Pope Francis a week earlier, can be seen as a practical contribution to creating the new ways for going forward. Last July, Fr Augusto Zampini spoke at the SLN Assembly and shared of how Pope Francis had summed up the aim of the Commission in just three words ‘Prepare the Future’. Fr Augusto stressed that this is radically different from prepare for the future; which implies our future is already set and all we can do is react to it. Prepare the Future focusses on our ability to become, as Paul VI invited us to be, ‘artisans of our own destiny’. Fr Augusto also shared this powerful cartoon from The Economist ii that captures the reality of our global situation and said that the current systems that have led to the climate emergency are not the systems that will get us out of it. The only response to the Climate Emergency is to find new ways of living together on this planet. But are we capable of doing this?

COP26 1st – 12th November 2021 Scotland COP26 will provide an opportunity for the world to come together and commit to radical climate action for our planet but will it offer new forms of hospitality, sisterhood and brotherhood, and solidarity’? Will it be bold enough to satisfy the global movement of young people who are demanding radical change and asking what is holding us back? They are calling us to imagine new ways of living togeth- er on this planet, ways that are in harmony with creation and ways that address the growing division between rich and poor, nationally and internationally. Their vision, their dream is not to be dismissed but to be cherished and shared. They, in so many ways, are the prophetic voices of today.

The prophet engages in futuring fantasy. The prophet does not ask if the vision can be implemented, for questions of implementation are of no consequence until the vision can be imagined. The imagination must come before the iii implementation. Our culture is competent to implement almost anything and to imagine almost nothing. Lenten Journey 2021 To help us imagine the way in which we are being called to prepare a future that gives hope to all the children of our world, and their children’s’ children, and to Mother Earth we invite you to join us on Lenten Journey of dis- cernment. (more information on next page) LENT: We have received no information form the Bishops’ Conference. Ash Wednesday will probably have a 9am YouTube mass. During Lent there will be the normal 2 YouTube masses and Stations of the Cross on YouTube at 4.30pm on Sundays.

2 From the Edinburgh Jesuit Centre There are 6 talks exploring Pope Francis’ teachings and some of today’s key issues. These are on Tuesdays at 7.30pm. All information on their WEB page. Really good and excellent speakers. https://edinburghjesuitcentre.org.uk/ The Mission Group with Bishop Stephen has cancelled the Diocesan Mission Day as with the pandemic it was becoming impossible to plan. We still are keeping our year’s theme to mission and climate change as a preparation for COP26. We hope throughout the year parishes will become more involved and many become Eco Parishes. There will be many talks after Lent but 2 very practical ones are: Energy efficiency in homes and small businesses Monday 8th Feb 2021 7.30pm–8.30pm https://www.ecocongregationscotland.org/event/energyefficiencyinhomes/

Net Zero Carbon: Church Heating - Practical Considerations Monday 15th Feb 2021 7.30pm–8.30pm https://www.ecocongregationscotland.org/event/churchheating/ St. Mungo’s & St. Serf’s ...... Until a new parish priest is appointed to St. Mungo’s and St. Serf’s Fr. Mike has been appointed by Bishop Stephen as Administrator. This basically means he has full authority for all pastoral, ecclesiastical and civil affairs of the parishes. It is ex- pected this will last at least during the summer period.

Starting this weekend, we have added this page to the St. Bernadette’s Newsletter to cater explicitly for St. Mungo’s and St. Serf’s. We are fully aware that this only reaches out to those who have emails. Unlike St. Bernadette’s there is a St. Mungo’s Facebook page where information is also shared. Important, changes to notices will also be given at the end of the 2 YouTube masses we have.

Much of the general information and Diocesan Information is in the first part of the newsletter and we will not repeat it separately on St. Mungo’s/ St. Serf’s section. If any parishioner that currently receives the newsletter by email knows others who would want this please ask them to send their request stating which parish you are from to the parish office at

Mgr. John Harty. Fr. Mike has celebrated 2 masses on Zoom. Mass was celebrated with the teachers of St. Mungo’s Primary school who Mgr. John was their parish priest and chaplain. He had given immense support to the School Parents Council and the staff during this difficult period without their own building. Mass was also celebrated with the Knights of St. Columba. Mgr. John was their chaplain and was constantly present and supporting their activities.

Please remember in your prayers those who are sick: And also pray for all those effected by coronavirus, families, carers, doctors, nurses and all who support them and us in any way.

ST.MUNGO’S FABRIC & MAINTENANCE Until a parish priest is appointed it would not be appropriate to make any changes. However, Bishop Stephen has agreed with Fr. Mike a few things have to be done to make the parish house fit and welcoming. A leak in the house’s roof has already led to damage to the upstairs office ceiling. This needs an urgent and costly repair as it is a copper roof. At present we are looking for 3 firms to give us a quote. We also have been trying to contract a plumb- er as 2 of the 3 toilets are not functioning and there is also a bad leak under the sink in the kitchen. All major re- pairs in the Diocese now have to be approved by the Diocesan Fabric Committee. This approval has been given. We are also in the process of trying to install smart meters in the church which should make a difference to the way we are billed.
