(June 16, 2010) – In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Kasey Fagan of Dunnellon High School (Dunnellon, Fla.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year. Fagan was surprised with the news during a team breakfast at Dunnellon High School by three-time World Champion and former NCAA Women’s College World Series MVP Alicia Hollowell, who earned Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year honors in 2001-02. “It felt great to surprise Kasey with the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award and welcome her into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Hollowell, a member of the 2008 USA Softball Women’s National Team, who holds the University of Arizona Wildcats career record for wins and strikeouts. “Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.” By claiming the 220th National Player of the Year trophy to be awarded in the program’s 25-year history, Fagan joins former SEC Tournament MVP and LSU Tigers pitcher Dani Hofer (2004-05, Palm Harbor University, Palm Harbor) as the only high school athletes from the state of Florida to earn Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year recognition. -

GATORADE® NATIONAL SOFTBALL PLAYER of the YEAR: MEGAN FARAIMO Two-Time Olympic Softball Pitcher Jennie Finch Surprises Winner with Honor
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kelsey Rhoney (312-729-3685) GATORADE® NATIONAL SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR: MEGAN FARAIMO Two-time Olympic Softball Pitcher Jennie Finch Surprises Winner with Honor San Diego, Calif. (June 7, 2017) – In its 33rd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company today announced Megan Faraimo of Cathedral Catholic High School (San Diego, Calif.) as its 2017-18 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year. Faraimo was surprised with the news by two-time Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch. Check out the surprise video here. "Megan is a superb talent who will certainly make an immediate impact at UCLA next year,” says Derek Allister, owner of OnDeckSoftball Scouting/Recruiting Service. “Her combination of velocity, spin rate and command are second to none. Behind her quiet exterior, she is a relentless competitor. When you add all that up, you have the makings for one of the next great pitchers in collegiate softball.” The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Faraimo as the nation’s best high school softball player. A national advisory panel comprised of sport-specific experts and sports journalists helped select Faraimo from nearly 360,000 high school softball players nationwide. Faraimo is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a special ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July. The 6-foot-1 senior right-handed pitcher compiled a 26-3 record in the circle with a 0.23 ERA this past season, leading the Dons (26-4) to the San Diego Section Open Division championship game. -

Softball DIVISION I SOFTBALL
166 DIVISION I Softball DIVISION I SOFTBALL 2001 Championship Highlights Cats Command Series: Arizona's Jennie Finch finished her 32-0 season on the mound with a 1-0 win over UCLA in the Women's College World Series championship game May 28 and was named the most-outstanding player in the tournament. The championship match-up was a familiar one for Finch and the Wildcats, who faced their Pacific- 10 Conference rival for the fourth time of the season. Arizona had won two of the first three. The two teams have now met six times in championship-game history. Arizona owns six NCAA titles, second to UCLA's eight. Home runs had been the difference for Arizona's advancing to the championship game, including a home run in each of the Wildcats' three games of the WCWS from senior Toni Mascarenas. While UCLA pitcher Amanda Freed held Arizona to just three hits in the final, one a homer from senior catcher Lindsey Collins in the fourth inning made the difference in the game. All-Tournament Team: Arizona's Collins, Mascarenas and Nicole Giordano joined Finch on the all-tournament team, while UCLA placed Tairia Mims, Freed and Claire Sua. Stanford's Jessica Photo by Chris Landsberger/NCAA Photos Mendoza, LSU's Britni Sneed and Julie Wiese, and Oklahoma's Jennifer Stewart and Christy Ring also were honored. Pitcher Jennie Finch celebrated a shutout victory over UCLA for the NCAA title May 28. The junior TEAM STANDINGS finished the season 32-0 on the mound.
