Dumas is one of my favorite authors, despite writing popular or pulp fiction in his day. His sense of heroics and depth of characters is timeless, which is why his novels, especially those involving the Musketeers, have been translated time and time again into movies and television programs. Language in his books will vary based on translations from French, but all in all, the vigor, largely historical context and wonderfully alive people make his books a pleasure as well as an education to read. For readers who are used to extremely linear storytelling, Dumas' writing can be a bit odd - he establishes his characters, then trails off on supporting characters, leaving his heroes behind for chapters at a time. He ties it all together in the end, so if you're accustomed to more typically structured novels, give him time - you'll get there in the end.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice follow-up to The Three MusketerrsBy AmericanCitizenI read The Three Musketeers and loved it. This book really dragged for me at the first though. I read the first chapter or two, let it sit a day or so, then went back and read it again. Had I not found The Three Musketeers so delightful I might not have continued with this book. I did though, and it picked up about halfway through. By that time I found myself looking for moments I could grab the book and read some more. I enjoyed the rest of the book and went on to read The Man in the Iron Mask. I did not realize that there are actually two books in between this one and the last one, so if you want to read the series do try to get all five. This is a trilogy, but the third book is split up into three, the last of which is The Man in the Iron Mask. I still enjoyed the three books I read, and immediately read The Count of Monte Cristo afterwards. It was even better!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great ReadBy Mary Jo BeallI love d'Artagnan and how he relates to his friends and life. This is a wonderful continuation of the Three Musketeers as more mature men, but still very much themselves. I thoroughly enjoyed it and this was the second time I read it. Dumas writes dialogue so well. The dialogue between d'Artagnan and the queen toward the end of the book is exceptional as are various dialogues as the 3 friends adjust to the changes they experience in each other. This is an exciting romp through a specific time in history. This title includes an introduction by A. M. de Medeiros, University of Kent at Canterbury. A year after the publication of "The Three Musketeers", Alexandre Dumas produced a sequel worthy in every respect of the original. In "Twenty Years After" the much beloved D'Artaganan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis reunite to fight the forces of evil. In the original novel they defeated Milady, a formidable foe; now they need to face her vengeful son Mordaunt, as well as countering the machinations of the sinister Cardinal Mazarin. Their adventures also take them to England, where Cromwell is about to topple Charles I. Meanwhile, they must overcome the obstacles which the passing of time has placed between them. Rediscovering strength in unity, they fight for Queen and country. "The Musketeer" novels were a huge success in Dumas' own lifetime, and have lost none of their original appeal. Translated into many languages and adapted for cinema and television, they have helped to make Dumas arguably the most successful exporter of French culture to the wider world.
