Rebecca Kasmin The Vandalism of the Mosaics in the Severan Synagogue in Hammat Tiberias Rebecca Kasmin In the third and fourth century CE, the ancient city of Hammat Tiberias, located in modern-day Israel, developed as a Jewish center. One of its synagogues, excavated in the 1960s, contains a remarkable floor mosaic, one of the earliest synagogue mosaics in the country. It is composed of several panels, depicting traditional Jewish religious objects, as well as a zodiac wheel, complete with personifications of the four seasons, plus the figure of the god Helios in the middle, riding in his chariot. The extraordinary nature and circumstances of the mosaic and synagogue make its recent vandalism all the more difficult to bear. This article analyzes the vandalism of the mosaics that occurred on May 29, 2012, which seems most likely to be attributable to the Haredim, an ultra-orthodox sect of Judaism. After a discussion of the history of the site, and an analysis of the mosaics themselves, I discuss the perpetrators and their motive, the physical damage, recent comparable acts, and what could be done to prevent future attacks of a similar nature. ARAM, 23 (2011) 489-508. doi: 10.2143/ARAM.23.0.2959670 WALLS OF THE DECAPOLIS Dr. ROBERT SMITH (Mid-Atlantic Christian University) Walls were important to the citizens of the Decapolis cities.1 While the world- view of Late Antiquity interpreted the rise and fall of cities as ultimately being the result of divine intervention, the human construction of defensive walls was still a major civic concern. Walls, like temples, honored a city’s patron deities and fostered a sense of local identity and well-being. These structures, long a bulwark of independence and status for cities in the Levant,2 were present in the Hellenizing pre-Decapolis cities, permitted in the Decapolis during the Roman period and were promoted during the subsequent Byzantine period as well. Instead of fostering local rebellion against a distant Rome or later Con- stantinople, the construction of Decapolis city walls, like other components of the imperial architectural palette, was a strategic asset that served to cultur- ally unify the region’s ethnically and linguistically diverse population.3 The “spiritual walls” of cultural solidarity, established in Hellenism and continued by Rome, together with the physical walls of the Decapolis cities helped to preserve their identities for centuries. The Roman and Byzantine empires depended upon strong loyal cities like those of the Decapolis to sustain their rule in the Levant. WALLS OF PRE-DECAPOLIS CITIES IN THE PRE-ROMAN ERA Cities that would be counted as part of the Decapolis in the Roman Era were typically established in the Hellenistic era on the remains of ancient settle- ments. -

THE NAMES AND BOUNDARIES OF ERETZ-ISRAEL (PALESTINE) AS REFLECTIONS OF STAGES IN ITS HISTORY GIDEON BIGER INTRODUCTION Classical historical geography focuses on research of the boundaries of the various states, along with the historical development of these boundaries over time. Edward Freeman, in his book written in 1881 and entitled The Historical Geography of Europe, defines the nature of historical-geographical research as follows: "The work which we have now before us is to trace out the extent of territory which the different states and nations have held at different times in the world's history, to mark the different boundaries which the same country has had and the different meanings in which the same name has been used." The author further claims that "it is of great importance carefully to make these distinctions, because great mistakes as to the facts of history are often caused through men thinking and speaking as if the names of different countries have always meant exactly the same extent of territory. "1 Although this approach - which regards research on boundaries as the essence of historical geography- is not accepted at present, the claim that it is necessary to define the extent of territory over history is as valid today as ever. It is impossible to discuss the development of any geographical area having political and territorial significance without knowing and understanding its physical extent. Of no less significance for such research are the names attached to any particular expanse. The naming of a place is the first step in defining it politically and historically. -

Rome in the First Century, and later Between September 2nd and 9th a Newman Pilgrimage toured Rome By Barry Riley Newman pilgrimages have visited Rome several times before but this time we proved deeper. We ventured into the depths of the cellars beneath Roman villas, into the lowest levels of Emperor Nero’s palace and into Jewish catacombs which few have entered for the past 1,600 years. We also descended to the level of gloomy basements where in the First Century Roman soldiers once worshipped Mithras, a God who came to earth to slay a bull. The group of some 25 pilgrims also, however, visited some more conventional attractions. Our chaplain, Mgr Patrick Kilgarriff, said Mass for us in the Crypt of St Perter’s (actually in the Irish Chapel there) and afterwards we had a guided tour of the basilica, with indications of where a number of Popes were buried. Interesting facts were pointed out to us, such as that almost all the pictures in St Peter’s are mosaics rather than paintings. Later in the week we returned to the Vatican for the evening opening of the Museum. This gave us the chance to visit the Sistine Chapel and there the tired Newman pilgrims sank gratefully on to the benches at the sides. Sitting, it was much easier to gaze up at the magnificent ceiling. All around hundreds of other visitors milled about, occasionally warned by guards to keep silent and not to use cameras. Jewish history in Rome A main theme of the pilgrimage was the early history of the Jews in Rome. -

T Traditionally, Mary Magdalene’s name is assumed to indicate the place she came from: Magdala, meaning ‘the Tower’. However, no place named Magdala is mentioned in the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament or in other contemporaneous writing. The site called ‘Magdala’ in Israel today, some 5 km north of Tiberias and just north of Mount Arbel, continues a Byzantine identification, from the 5th or 6th centuries CE. It is often assumed that the sizeable town now coming to light here was more commonly called by the Greek name Tarichaea. However, questions may be asked about evidence. There was a village attested in rabbinic literature as Migdal Nuniya (‘Tower of Fish’), lying about one mile north of Tiberias, which was probably called ‘Magdala’ locally, but this Magdala lay south of Mount Arbel. -
