Biographical/Historical note

The Lobach Family Papers (1830s to Present) details the lives of five generations of women and their involvement in the community of northwest Denver (Colo.), and Denver in general. Eugene Blair Lobach, a traveling salesman and tinsmith, (1858-1958, Iowa) originally left Iowa heading west toward Denver in 1889. With wife, Sophia Dorothea Wagner “Adah” (1861-1931, Ohio) and two children in tow, Louis Earl Lobach (1882-1893, Iowa) and Lulu Pearl Lobach (1881-1892, Iowa), they headed west making a stop in Kearney, Nebraska for the birth of their third child, a daughter, Grace Elizabeth Lobach (1889-2010, Nebraska). The family stayed in Kearney only until both mother and child were strong enough to continue the journey. Once in Denver, the family lived on Hayward Place (NW Denver), finally buying the family home in about 1891 at 2851 Perry St. (NW Denver), and became active members of the Central Presbyterian Church. Tragedy struck the family in 1892 and 1893, when both Pearl and Earl died- one due to lockjaw/tetanus (from stepping on a rusty nail) and the other from plague with both buried in Riverside Cemetery (Denver). The family owned the Lobach Hardware Store in the Historic Windsor Hotel (at 18th and Larimer Streets) carrying such diverse items as pickaxes, shovels, fine china, and cloth. Eugene used to trade tobacco for items from the American Indians while Adah ran the tobacco/cigar counter and preformed all the bookkeeping duties. When the American Indians would come in to do business, Grace would hide under the counter despite them finding her quite friendly and interesting. Eugene was known as an extremely charming gentleman with his tall, slender physique, his well-groomed mustache, and elegant cane. He was known as a very kind man who was often referred to as “that charming Irishman." He was a founding member of the Woodsmen of the World in Denver, a poet and prolific writer, and an inventor. He also enjoyed his poker games with the likes of Wild Bill Hickok. While playing cards, Eugene enjoyed his alcohol and the family home and business stayed in Adah’s name to prevent them from becoming stakes in a poker game. A few of the things invented by Eugene are an extra large coffee urn (like those used at group functions today) and the steam furnace which he installed as the first furnace at the Little Sisters of the Poor Hospital and Senior Center (West 29th Avenue and Lowell Street, Denver). Unfortunately, he never obtained patents for his inventions. Grace was known for her musical talents studying piano under the famous Richard Ganz and others. She graduated from the Henshaw Conservatory of Music (Chicago) and dedicated her whole life to performing, writing compositions, and teaching piano and voice. She also was the inventor of the Kolo (Color) System of Music Instruction for kindergarten aged children, though she never obtained any type of patent. She was a member of the Denver Musicians’ Society, and continued to worship at the Central Presbyterian Church (Denver). She was also a poet and writer, publishing at least three books during her lifetime. She was a member of the Poetry Society of Denver, the National Pen Women’s Association and founder of the Chopin

- Page 4 - Lobach Family Papers Music Club of Denver. She was also world-renown for her mystic skills and teachings. According to the family, she especially enjoyed reading tea leaves. She founded the non-denominational Temple of Divine Brotherhood in 1925 and was an associate and friend of world-renown Hindi Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952). She was married five times: to Arthur Chase Bowman (m. 1905) at age 16. He was the son of the owners of the Bowman Biscuit Co. that later became the Keebler Cookie Co; Fredrick Gustave Steinke (m. 1913), a Denver shoe salesman and alcoholic, who ran off with the maid yet never married her; her third husband, Frank Stillman Woodbury (m. 1924) was the son of the famous U.S. Civil War Captain, Roger W. Woodbury. As a way to demonstrate his deep love for Grace, he purchased the home at 2841 Perry St. (next door to her parents) as a wedding gift. Great dissension split the family due to the children not liking him and Grace filed for divorce. He moved into the Denver Athletic Club (where he was one of the founders). Though deaf, he gained and lost four fortunes and his original cause of death is listed as heart attack; however, the family believes it to be suicide over losing Grace. After his death, Grace had the divorce annulled and utilized the Woodbury name for the rest of her life. Her final husband, Troy Valentine McKelvey (m. 1938 & ?) was an alcoholic and she actually married him twice. Both divorces were because of his alcoholism and lack of help in raising his sons. Grace’s ashes were placed in Sloan’s Lake (Denver) after her death. Grace’s son, William Eugene Steinke (b.1914, Denver) earned his engineering degree from the University of Colorado and worked many years for the Martin Marietta Aerospace Companies, later becoming a Civilian Representative to the U.S. Air Force and N.A.S.A. for RocketDyne. His most famous project was working on the Apollo 11 Spacecraft that landed on the moon. Grace’s daughter, Sophia Steinke (1918-2010, Denver) as known as a world-renown pianist, opera singer, and ballet dancer. She studied under Lillian Cushing and finally abandoned her dance career upon getting struck by rheumatoid arthritis at age 18 thus turning her career toward voice. She started teaching piano at age 12 and continued teaching both piano and voice for the remainder of her life at the Chopin Music Club originally founded by her mother. She studied french at the International Club sponsored by the University of Denver, voice with Madame Lucy Lennox D’Arcy in New York City, and was planning on continuing her voice studies in Italy when she learned she was pregnant. She performed with the original Denver Civic Opera, Denver Grand Opera Company, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the Cheesman Park Pavilion, as well as under Dr. Antonia Brico, Madame Haika Morrill and others. She was also president of the Denver Musician’s Society, Colorado Federation of Junior Music Clubs, an honorary member of SAI (Sigma Alpha Iota) Music Sorority and won first place for her classical piano performance and narration in the 2000 Silver Queen Pageant of the Colorado State Fair. First married at age 16, her four husbands were: Dr. Bruce Doty Smith (m. 1935), an Air Force Surgeon who upon retirement opened a private practice in Denver, and who after their divorce, moved to New Hampshire; and second marriage, Russell Dean Cornelius (m. 1945). They first met while in French class and he was very supportive of her music. They both performed as exhibition dancers (in ballroom dancing, tango, and square dancing) at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo. After leaving the military, he went on to become a court reporter in Colorado Springs and Seattle Washington while also owning an antique import store. They later divorced and he moved to Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico where he committed suicide in 1987. Bruce Edmonson (m. 1953), husband number three, had a bachelor’s

- Page 5 - Lobach Family Papers degree in chemistry from Colorado State University and worked for the Gates Rubber Co. with Gates owning the rights to many of his patents. He was a radar man on the U.S.S. Essex (before and during the Korean War), and played the French horn extensively. He performed with Dr. Antonia Brico’s Denver Businessmen’s Symphony, the Denver VFW Band, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra, and the Denver Concert Band. And finally, Sophia married Edward J. Talbot (m. 1996) with the marriage getting annulled two years later. Stephanie Cornelius (1948-2009, Denver), Sophia’s daughter, continued the musical legacy of the family. While at Lincoln High School (Denver), she participated in the Citywide Symphony Orchestra (playing violin), performed in Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, performed in the Stars of Tomorrow sponsored by the S.W. Denver Kiwanis Club, played violin in the All-City and All-State Symphony Orchestra, played violin in the Denver Businessmen’s Orchestra, earned 4-years of superior ratings on the violin in the Colorado NFMC Junior Festivals and served as the federation’s junior president- the first to be given that title while in high school. Also while in high school, she participated in the String Orchestra Camp at the University of Wyoming, which claims to be “the only camp devoted exclusively to strings” (String Orchestra Camp brochure). She continued her studies at Northwestern University and finally the University of Denver where she sang in the choir. Mystic skills also graced Stephanie as she continued the work (teachings, etc.) of her grandmother and mother. She too wrote extensively on the subject and many of her writings can be found in the collection. She was especially interested in the beliefs of American Indians. She also maintained a membership in the Daughters of Job’s while continuing her own teachings and writings on mystic subjects. Caitlin Schwartz (b.1983) is the daughter of Stephanie and is the donor of this collection. She also excelled in high school being named to the National Honors Society while only a sophomore. She received many awards for her academics, athletics (swimming) and musical talents including Who’s Who of American High School Students, All-American Award (awarded by the National Intercollegiate Swimming Coaches Association) Brighton High School’s Athlete of the Year (Brighton, Colo.), Western State College Honor Band, and as a member of the 19th Skyline Honor Band. In 2009, she married Matthew Donald Rumery. ** Most of this information comes from the family history collected, and written down, by Grace’s Granddaughter, Ms. Stephanie Cornelius. **
