SEASON 2007 - 2008

BUBBLES – A CLUB LEGEND! David Neil (Bubbles) retired from the position of Secretary at the beginning of the 2007/08 seas on. Sadly, ill health has also meant that he has been unable to play this season – besides filling in and discovering he couldn’t see the ball! Despite this, he has continued to be a member of the Committee, our Association Liaison, our Merchandise Officer, a core contributor to the Declaration and attended many games throughout the season as a spectator. A huge thank you from the Ramblers for all that you have done for us over the years Bubbles… this is our tribute to you!

Bubbles hasn’t always played – in fact he first played the piano in his youth, but when told by his piano teacher “that if Mozart had wanted extra notes on the end of his music, he would have put them there himself”, he slammed the piano lid shut and never played again. Cubs and Scouts were also tried, but when he failed his cooking badge and got lost in the Sturt Gorge, that was the end of that.

Despite being unable to gain selection in either of the Blackwood High School senior cricket teams, Bubble’s passion for cricket saw him eventually commence his career with the Belair Cricket Club in 1966. He play ed with Belair for 4 seasons from 1966-70, until they disbanded. Left without a club, Bubbles found himself in the unusual situation of watching a game of cricket at Hawthorndene Oval. Spotted by Tony Benson, Ramblers “talent scout extraordinaire”, he was asked “how’d you like a game?”

Bubbles started with the Ramblers in the newly formed B Grade side on the 9th January 1970 against an old foe, Keswick. at #10, Bubbles was caught and bowled for 17 and he never got a bowl. He didn’t get a bowl in his second match either and worse, he made a duck. He made another duck in his third game and had bowling figures of 0/20 off 4 overs. In his fourth match, batting #11, he didn’t get a bat or bowl. Not surprisingly, he was unavailable for the next match but played the last game of the season where he made 4 . His first season then was less than sensational – in 5 games he amassed 21 runs and no .

In his second season he fared a little better – in 7 matches he accumulated 29 runs and failed by 6 wickets to take more wickets than he made runs. It was now painfully obvious that Bubbles was never going to win a batting trophy BUT he did go on to win 3 bowling trophies in the B Grade during his peak from 1978-80 and he has won a further bowling trophy in the D Grade. Bubbles captained the B Grade in the 1974/75 season, has had various vice captain roles in other teams and has been a mentor to many other players over the years.

At the conclusion of the 2006/2007 season, Bubbles completed his 42nd season of competitive cricket in the Adelaide and Suburban Cricket Association, (4 seasons with Belair and 38 with the Ramblers). Despite his less than illustrious start, Bubbles is second on the all time taking list with 504 wickets for an average of 17.8. This includes becoming the first ever Rambler to reac h 500 wickets on the 19th November 2005! He is also second on the all time games played list with 337 games. His batting record is a little less stellar, lying 75th on the all time batting list with a grand total of 1257 runs for an average of 7.3.

Bubbles’ greatest contribution to the game, however, has come from his dedication and commitment to its administration. As a teacher at South Road Primary School, he spent over 10 years during the 1970’s and 80’s coaching and managing the school’s cricket teams. After supervising his school team on a Saturday morning, he would play for the Ramblers in the afternoon.

He was elected Secretary of the Ramblers at the start of the 1976/77 season and held this position until the end of the 2006/07 season, a period of 31 years. In this time he has served with 11 different presidents and 14 different treasurers. Over his 31 years in the role, he undertook all the ‘normal’ duties that would be expected of a secretary, plus many additional roles. He has organised club meetings and events, including end of season dinners, selected and purchased trophies, organised the annual Double Wicket Competition and “100 Club” dinners, and many many barbeques.

Bubbles has also been the Ramblers delegate to the Association for the last 36 years, attending Association meetings and reporting back to the Ramblers. He has been Association Treasurer since 1980, a position he still holds. For his services, Bubbles was made a Life Member of the Association in 1988. The Section 2 Association Bowling Trophy is known as the David Neil Trophy in his honour.

Bubbles has a remarkable interest in and recall of figures, and from his early days with the Ramblers he has been self appointed statistician. He initiated the club’s magazine, The Declaration, in 1974 and was the editor and principal writer for 33 years. He continues to be heavily If they’d held their catches, I would hav e had 1000… in vol ve d in its production to this day. This has not only provided Bubbles with an opportunity to keep everyone informed, but has also enabled him to demonstrate his dry sense of humour – many a Rambler player has felt the sting of his pen!

In summary, for over 40 years Bubbles has demonstrated a strong commitment and dedication to cricket, and the Ramblers in particular. He has been extremely generous with his time and has maintained an enthusiasm for the variety of roles he has taken on. The success of our club over the last three decades, and its standing at pres ent, are in no small way a reflection of Bubbles’ endless hard work and commitment. We hope his involvement with the club continues for many more years, in whatever capacity he decides. THANK YOU BUBBLES

Bubbles, congratulations so far on what has been an incredible career at both the Ramblers and on the Association. The work you have done for many goes unheralded yet those of us who have been on the committee with you for so many years realise just how much you have done. I started on the committee way back in 1978/79 and the many years spent in your lounge room at meetings is so much a part of my life. Who can forget the countless beers, wines and ports. The sausage rolls, pasties and pies. Going up-market to spring rolls etc. Sitting around after the meetings expanding on our achievements was a huge highlight. You are the heart and the soul of the club and I look forward to you being a part of the club for many more years. Steve Davenport

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2007/08

The 2007/08 season was a mixed season for the club. Due to the difficulty in securing numbers for this season, the tough decision to drop the 5th side meant the club had four teams spread throughout the sections.

Unfortunately, the lost numbers contributed to a season where no team made the finals. Given that the club had won a premiership in the past 3 seasons, it was not something the club expected. At times getting 4 sides on the field was extremely tough and Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner as head selector made a huge number of phone calls to get as many players as he could.

There were a number of positives to come out of the year. The A Grade side, lead by Justin (JC) Calderbank in his first year as captain, has seen a huge turnaround in players from the previous season and the average age has come tumbling down. In the final game of the year, over half the team were under 25 years old and only three over 30. With the team losing a couple that it maybe could have won, there's a good chance the team could have made the finals. To say there's exciting years ahead is an understatement.

B Grade also saw a substantial change to the team's make-up with a number of younger players taking the field each week. The team's year was considered a success by winning a number of games and being very competitive even in the ones lost. Again, with a number of young players and with the substantial improvement made this year by a number of other players, the A & B Grade squads will be very competitive in the near future. Nat Elliot as captain for much of the season, and Phil Mayes for the latter part when Nat was promoted to A Grade, did a great job in giving the young players good opportunities with bat and ball and should be commended for that.

C Grade was given a tough assignment this year operating in Section 4. With a number of players being promoted to the B Grade, and with numbers around the club thin at times, Mike Jenner as captain had a hard time making his team competitive. The second half of the season was more successful, winning 2 of their games after Christmas and only missing a couple of close games. Mike led the team with bat and ball, winning both the batting and bowling trophy. Mike also achieved Life Member status with the club in the final game of the season which is a great effort!

Brett Chilton, captain of the D Grade, also had a tough ask at times with player numbers. Brett still managed to steer his side to getting very close to the finals, where a win in the last couple of games would have potentially secured a spot. It wasn't to be, but still a season where a lot of guys got a good opportunity and also saw the return of some past players who pulled on the whites again.

Ashley (Happy) Bryant took on the task as club Coach this year and his efforts have been tremendous. The job is quite a daunting one with players of all skills and experience to contend with and Happy has managed it beautifully. He's early to every practice, packs up the gear after every training, never misses a BBQ and has spent hours upon hours of his time preparing for practices, gathering stats and talking to captains and players. A fantastic job and hopefully Happy can continue on in the coming years.

Off the field can only be considered a big success, with the club layi ng some very solid foundations for the future. The club secured the Coromandel Community Centre at Weymouth Ova l to be the Ramblers' new home for functions and after game drinks. Matt Smith made a huge effort this year with supplying drinks and food for the BBQ each Saturday and selection night, along with the Qui z Night and other club functions. Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner and Scott Brodie also helped out b y getting the drinks and food to the Community Centre for after game festivities on a Saturday.

Financially the club is very strong primarily due to increased fees over the past two seasons along with tight spending where possible. Damian (Dimi) Allen, as Treasurer, has done a great job chasing down fees, paying bills and so-on.

Prior to the season starting, the Past and Present Player's Dinner was held at the Community Centre. Around 50 players enjoyed a great dinner and some enjoyable stories from special guest speaker, International Umpire Daryl Harper, an ex-Ramblers player himself.

The club also had its annual, and very successful, Quiz Night held this year at the Blackwood Memorial Centre. Around 130 people came along and from all reports, everyone really enjoyed the night. Some great silent auction items were again up for grabs, such as memorabilia from the Indian Cricket Team, a framed bat with signed card by Sir Donald Bradman, a car donated by Car Auctions Australia and a number of other items. Thanks go to Steve Davenport and Paul Durham (DDE) for sponsoring the night.

The final social event of the year was the Double Wicket competition which saw 4 players from Belair Cricket Club join around 22 Ramblers and friends to play for the coveted trophy. The final came down to Matt Smith / Karl Gill and Dave Wright / Nick Work with Smith / Gill taking out the wi n.

The Committee is primarily the reason the club is currently in the position it is. There have been some really big efforts put in this year by some committee members and without it, the club would have struggled to continue. A few not already mentioned are Meredith Jenner, Secretary, who also puts together this Declaration (along with Peter (Houghie) Hough and David (Bubbles) Neil), Phil Mayes for organising the caterers and Aaron Vander Wyst for putting a number of flyers and other items in place.

Members of the Committee this year were: Glen Rosie as President, Damian (Dimi) Allen as Treasurer, Meredith Jenner as Secretary, David (Bubbles) Neil as Association Liaison, Matt Smith, Aaron Vander Wyst, Mike Jenner, Phil Mayes and Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner. On behalf of the club I'd like to say a big thanks to all the Committee for their tireless work in helping make the club what it is.

COACH’S REPORT 2007/08

The 2007/08 season saw a number of changes, with the Coach being one such example. Although the process of coach selection was not ideal, the whole experience has been great personally and I look forward to next season. This season also saw a number of new additions, new roles and new faces amongst the club and for that, I must congratulate those people. Unfortunately, I could not deliver a finals appearance this year for which I am deeply sorry, but if the club can keep the talent pool we had this year, and with the addition of a few new faces, I do believe that we can have a serious push for finals next season. This is my deepest regret of the season and I do look on it as a personal failure, considering the recent success with a similar player group.

The A Grade saw a reasonably stable side throughout the year, with a large positive of many player attending trainings at least every second week. With such a large attendance of players and my lack of playing any A Grade cricket, it was initially difficult. However, with the guidance of the captain, Justin (JC) Calderbank, and other senior players, it made the task that little bit easier. I must applaud Justin for his approach to his players about his insistence of attending training. Although I would like to see everyone attend, I am aware that some of the practicalities of life make it difficult. Otherwise, the A Grade provided plenty of entertainment, plenty of cheer and the knowledge that many of them would listen to my guidance. However, a costly Christmas break really did dent the chances of final, but such issues are to be assessed across the off-season.

The B Grade again represented a solid attendance to training across most weeks, but never really reaching the highs of the A Grade. However, this starts from the top, with the dual- Captains of the B Grade not necessarily attending training every week. However, the Captains almost represented the minority of the B Grade in training attendance, with many players turning up on a consistent basis. In particular, it is great to see the young players of the team coming down, having a bat and a bowl and listening to others about potential improvements. Of course, this was done in a very social environment with a bit of niggle always present, particularly amongst certain members of the team. However, for further improvement from a middle-of-the-table side, I must stress the importance of ALL A and B Grade players attending training at least once a week. Hence, the recommendation will be put forward to the players of these grades and the Committee that these players attend a minimum of one, if not two training sessions each week. One example of the improvements that can been seen is the Most Improved Pla yer, Josh (Archie) Haussen, who has taken time out of his busy schedule to train twice a week on the weeks when he was batting. Not only has the improvement from the previous year been immense, it also highlights his commitment to the Ramblers cause, for which I congratulate him.

Compared to the higher grades, the C Grade represented a team that was inconsistent in their attendance at training. Although not necessarily a fault of anyone in particular, it would have been great to see more players out to trainings and consistently playing when possible. I am aware that this side was not necessarily consistent in its formation across games, for which it made it even more difficult to see anyone from this grade attending training. Further, it might seem silly to some, but when teams are not winning, it makes it more important to come to training and just let off some steam. This way, it allows players to refresh, refocus and come Saturday, actually feeling like a new batsman or bowler. However, there are a few positives. I do applaud those players who attended and would thank the C Grade Captain Mike Jenner and David Wright for attending training when possible and helping setup and dismantle equipment, as many players simply shirted this issue. Unfortunately, this represented almost the sum total of C Grade players attending on more than a few occasions, which means that an improvement in attendance next season would be well appreciated.

The D Grade represented a side that had a mixture of very young players and some not-so young players. However, this did not mean that they shirted the issue of listening to advice when required. Overall, training attendance was not too high due to inconsistent games and, dare I say, general soreness. Conversely, many players still came down to socialise with those players of higher grades and even some trained at a hard pace across the season. I must give my best to the Captain Brett Chilton for combining a side that might not be finalised until the night before a game, as well as managing the age differential and personalities within the team. I also give my best to those players who volunteered their time to help setup and pack up training most weeks of the season, for which you would know who you are. For those who did turn up to training consistently, I do applaud you for attending with the uncertainty as to whether or not you would play. However, it would be great to see many more of the ‘older’ players come out and train, particularly if they could impart some of the knowledge they have gained across the years to the younger generation.

In summing up, I hope you enjoyed your season and reached or exceeded your initial goals. I also hope that you found the new coaching style different to what was occurring previously and I hope that I did not come across as ‘lazy’. Although it might seem to some people that I am not attending to them, it simply represents my style of coaching compared to Tony Benson. However, if you wanted my attention or if I came up and spoke to you, I hope you took my advice on board and considered it thoroughly. In the end, I am a coach and I am there to help you, but it is your choice as to whether you take the advice. If you are not listening to others or me, I must suggest that you are missing a valuable source of information that you will probably regret later on in your career.

Further, I would like to thank those players who have helped with setting up, packing up, running the book and/or helping with drills. Without you, it makes my job far more time consuming and in the end, only affects the standard of training. However, there is always more room for others to help, which in the end makes lighter amounts of work for all. Finally, it would be great to see you out to pre-season training to help blow out the cobwebs prior to the beginning of the season. There are a couple of other options that I will inform the playing group about soon, but otherwise, enjoy your off-season with whatever pursuit you so choose. In addition, expect a few changes to next seasons training and coaching, beginning with a pre-season training schedule that I hope you will attend. Further, if you have a mate or two who are keen to play next season, bring them out, introduce them and enjoy the next season with even more mates than the season gone.

TROPHIES AND AWARDS 2007/08

A GRADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Matthew Smith on winning both the 2007/08 A Grade Player of the Year Award and the overall Player of the Year Award with 16 votes. Matthew has probably had his best season with the club, scoring 292 runs and taking 34 wickets in the A Grade competition.

Matthew has won both awards before back in 2003/04. Only two other A Grade players have won both awards in the same year – Glenn Bailey in 2002/03 and Justin Strange in 2005/06.

Matthew has achieved much with the Ramblers since he commenced playing in 1993/94 in Tony Benson’s “junior” team. He has played 145 games, scored 2101 runs at 18.9 and taken 228 wickets at 20.6. This year Matthew scored his first ever century and also won the A Grade Bowling Trophy. He has taken 5 or more wickets in an innings on 4 occasions and is a member of the hat- trick club. Matthew also holds the record A Grade 10th wicket partnership of 107 with Damian (Dimi) Allen.

In addition to his superb on-field performances, Matthew is a great clubman and has organised the BBQs, been Treasurer and been a Committee Man for many years. Well done Matthew!

The Glen Watchman Clubman Award for 2007/08 has been won by Glen Rosie. Glen first joined the club in 1992/93 as a junior in Tony Benson’s team. Since then he has played 89 games, scoring 326 runs at 8.2 and taking 141 wickets at 21.6. Glen has won two Bowling Trophies in the B Grade and two in the D Grade.

Glen took over as President towards the end of the 2005/06 season and has continued to do a magnificent job over the last two years. He has also been Treasurer, liaised with the council over Weymouth Oval, attended Association meetings and been instrumental in organising many successful club functions. This year, Glen has also taken on the job of entering in the scores for all the teams at the end of each game. Well done Glen!

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR

Brad Davenport has won the Hayden Hill Memorial Trophy for the Most Promising Junior for 2007/08. Brad is the son of former Ramblers player Tony Davenport.

Brad, in his second year with the club, has played 15 games, scored 346 runs at 24.7 and taken 29 wickets at 16.4. This year Brad has shown a marked improvement in his game and has risen through the grades to become a solid performer in the A Grade.

Congratulations Brad and we look forward to seeing what you can do in future years!

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

This year the club has instigated a new award – the David Ferris Most Improved Player Award. Please see the history of the awards later in this magazine for a description of the award and the reasons it was introduced.

The inaugural winner of this award is Josh (Archie) Haussen. Josh joined the club in 2006/07 and played in the D Grade in his first season. This season he started in the B Grade and was elevated to the A’s after scoring 97 not out against Coromandel. An outstanding fielder and a very talented batsman, Josh has become a key player in the A Grade. To date, he has played 18 games, scored 450 runs at 26.5 and taken 5 wickets at 25.8. Well done Josh!

DOUBLE WICKET COMPETITION The Double Wicket Competition made a welcome return this season. Karl Gill and Matthew Smith defeated the reigning champion Nick Work and his new partner David Wright in a close final by 39 to 35. This was Matthew’s second win and Karl’s first. A turnout of 26 players, including representatives from the Belair Cricket Club, made it a closely fought competition this season.

DUCK CLUB The prized position of Captain of the Duck Club for season 2007/08 and holder of the perpetual trophy is Ju stin (JC) Calderbank, our proud A Grade Captain. His commitment to making the Duck Club looked to be wavering when he produced a ‘terrible’ 103 in Round 5 against Coromandel. Since then, his commitment has never been stronger, with all 4 of his ducks produced in the later rounds. We congratulate JC on his fine achievement and hope this recognition of his effort will renew his vigour to join the Duck Club in future years.

Another special mention goes to the regular members of the Duck Club. All members should congratulate Sam Davenport and Wayne (the Hoff) Ha sel for their ongoing support within this prestigious club, with both members supporting ‘duck’ causes for 3 consecutive years. A round of “quacks” must go out to these kind fell as!

Finally, it is good to see the renewal of life within the Duck Club, particularly amongst father-and-son members. Although the Chilton’s did not meet the entry requirements this year, it is a pleasure to announc e that the father of Sam, Steve (Davo) Davenport, is also accepted into the club. Even more excitingly, their cousin/nephew Brad Davenport has also met requirements and hence, is allowed to enter the prestigious surroundings. We thank the bloodline that has developed within the Davenport family for providing such outstanding service to the Duck Club. Not to be outdone, the father-and- son combination of Andrew and Mike Jenner also did their part for the Duck Club this season. Both Jenners also managed to score ducks in the same innings which is a great effort in itself.

A Duck Club, however, is not made up of only five players, but more a group of 11 motivated members: We therefore are proud to present to you the 2007/08 Duck Club Team in its entirety: Justin (JC) Calderbank (4 ducks in 187 runs, Captain); Dwayne Ruddock (3 ducks in 35 runs, Vice-Captain); Brad Davenport (3 ducks in 225 runs, Deputy Vice-Captain); Forbe s Thompson (2 ducks in 0 runs); Wayne Hasel (2 ducks in 21 runs); Andrew Jenner (2 ducks in 26 runs ); Sam Davenport (2 ducks in 51 runs); Kingsley Smith (2 ducks in 111 runs); Steve (Davo) Davenport (2 ducks in 214 runs); Kevin O’Looney (2 ducks in 255 runs) and Mike Jenner (2 ducks in 323 runs).

12th man duties fall to Jo sh (Archie) Haussen (2 ducks in 350 runs) and Karl Gill (2 ducks in 357 runs). Finally, an honourable mention goes to the Duck Club Coach, Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner, who has managed not to make a ‘duck’ this season, but who has been 0 not out twice. Therefore, he has been employ ed to help members move forward into ‘clearer’ and ‘richer’ waters with the ‘special red ink’. Congratulations to those renewing their membership and special welcome to new members. To everyone else, remember that competition is fierce to join this exclusive club! BBQ MAN OF THE YEAR

The BBQ Man of the Year Award this year goes to Tom (Mad Dog) Muir. Some may argue that Tommy’s best effort was in eating the food and drinking the Jim Beams. However, he consistently attended the after- game and selection BBQs and helped out with cooking and cleaning up throughout the year, whilst ensuring that he never missed out on buying his Saturday X-Lotto tickets. Congratulations Tommy!

Special mention must also go to Matt Smith who made a huge effort this year with supplying the drinks and food for the BBQ each Saturday and selection night and who organised the bar at other club functions.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Congratulations to Michael Jenner, who has this season become the 33rd player to achieve Life Membership of the Coromandel Ramblers Cricket Club.

Mi ke played his first game for the Ramblers in 1994/95, although he attended training the previous season without getting a game. The fact the Mike has achieved 150 games in just 14 seasons is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the club. This is particularly evident when you consider that Mike achieved Life Membership only a season after his father Andrew Jenner did – and Andy took 32 years to get there!

Since 1994/95 Mike has played 150 games, scored 2290 runs at 22.0 and taken 260 wickets at 19.7. He has played in every grade, has scored one century and taken 5 or more wickets in an innings on 9 occasions. He is one of only 3 Ramblers to take two hat-tricks for the club, alongside Des Chilton and David (Bubbles) Neil. In his second hat-trick, against the old enemy Coromandel, Mike’s figures for the game were 5/1 off 2.4 overs (with the 1 run being a wide). His father Andrew Jenner took the final catch for the hat-trick.

Mike has won the B Grade Bowling Trophy on 4 occasions, the C Grade Bowling Trophy on 2 occasions (including this season) and the D Grade Bowling Trophy on 2 occasions. He has also won the Association Bowling Trophy for the most wickets in a season. To show his all-round talent, Mike has also won a C Grade (this season) and a D Grade Batting Trophy, plus he won the1994/95 Double Wicket Competition with Mark Terry.

In addition to his impressive record, Mike captained the D Grade to their Premiership in 2004/05, captained the D Grade the following year to the minor round premiership and captained the C Grade this season. He has also served as a Committee Member and a Selector and put in a huge effort to get the fundraising chocolates reinstated and organised.

Congratulations on reaching Life Membership Mike!

A GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

I would like to start my Captain’s Report by saying it has been a huge honour and privilege to be the Coromandel Ramblers A Grade Captain this season. I had a call from the President, Glen Rosie, offering me the role. At first I was a bit surprised after only being at the club for one year, but after hearing what he had to say I was very excited about the position. I hope I have done the club proud. It has been a tough, frustrating year and there have been a lot of ups and downs but definitely more positives than negatives.

I strongly believe that the club is on the right track to be one of the power houses, if not the best club, in the Adelaide and Suburban Cricket Association. I have brought a culture to the A Grade to play a hard brand of cricket. We have implemented this style throughout the season very successfully as a team and as individuals. Positives: We have turned around results from last year e.g. against ICC Sharks - last years Premiers, Morphettville Park and Mitchell Park and put in great performances against Western Youth and South Road.

I would like to thank Matt Smith, who has been a great support to myself and knows where I am coming from when I talk about the tough brand of cricket we should be playing. He is a huge asset to the club, plays with a lot of heart and is involved in many off field duties. Congratulations Smithy on winning the A G r ade B owling Trophy.

Congratulations to Karl Gill on winning the A Grade Batting Trophy and thanks for your support over the year. Congratulations to Aaron Vander Wyst who has won the Fielding Trophy this season. Aaron has worked extremely hard at his cricket and we all know that he can field very well. In my eyes, he is the best fieldsman in the club and he is a credit to himself with his efforts and his pride in how he goes about it. Sam Davenport played his first full year of A Grade cricket and has improved with every game. He has worked hard at his game and done everything I have asked of him as a Captain which is why I have awarded him the Captain’s Trophy this season.

Thanks also to Paul Durham for your support. My biggest enjoyment this year has been watching the development of Josh Haussen turning into a promising young A Grade cricketer - his future looks great. Brad Davenport had a taste of A Grade and showed a lot of promise for the future. Jon Ferris, Caleb Blesing and Manning Bailey - stick around for next year, it promises to be a successful one for the A Grade. We must work harder at all aspects of our game, so let’s stick together and be committed, and we will play finals next year.

Congratulations and thanks to all Ramblers players, the other Captains and the Coach Ashley (Happy) Bryant for all of their efforts. Thank you to the Committee for your hard work and support. One last thank you goes to Joe Blesing for helping out with the team manager role, cheers!!

Captaining the B Grade team was always going to be a challenge and with a large influx of new players there was always going to be a steep learning curve. Also, understandably, throughout the season if players showed promise and form, then there was always going to be a better than even chanc e that they would end up in the A Grade team.

We felt that our results and position on the ladder were disappointing this season. I put it partly down to players finding their feet in higher levels and the high level of player turnover. If we can maintain the core A and B Grade players from this year to next year, then I believe that we will have 2 very good sides next year.

However, there where a lot of positives to come out of the year. From the clubs point of view it was great to see a number of players step up and cement their spots in the A Grade side – namely Sam (Davo Jr) Davenport and Josh (Archie) Haussen. It was also good to see Brad Davenport get a taste of A Grade as I have no doubt that next year he will play a bigger role for them. There where also several players who proved that they are more than comfortable in B Grade, namely Andrew Work, Kingsley Smith and Dwayne Ruddock.

In the B Grade this year our batting let us down the most. The first game set the scene – after doing well and bowling out Plympton for 260ish on a fairly small, fast outfield and getting to 2 for 140, our next 8 wickets fell for just 60 runs, with at least 5 being bowled! It was also disappointing because Brad Davenport ran out of partners, ending up on 73 not out – a 100 for Brad and a win would have been my preferred option!!! Sam (Davo Jr) Davenport was the pick of the bowlers with 4/32.

The next game against Warradale, we decided to bat first and were all out for 97! Warradale got 230 and we st were then 2/113. We let ourselves down in the batting in the 1 innings and never recovered. Andrew Work scored a good 70 not out in the second innings.

Round 3 against Morphettville Park saw a match winning middle order recovery from Steve (Davo) Davenport and Adrian (Ca ss) Ca ssidy, adding over 100 to get us over the 200 mark. We bowled them out the following week for 139 with the standout bowler being Brad Davenport with 5 wickets.

Round 4 against Kenilworth, we decided to again bat first and this time were bowled out for 102, which was very disappointing because the majority of wickets were caught. Kenilworth knocked up 198 and sent us in again. Again we batted well in the second innings, finishing with 2/106 with Phil Mayes compiling a well made 50.

Round 5 was the local derby against Coromandel and it proved to be a close and feisty affair. We put them in on a scorcher of a day, (40ish), as penance for our prior abysmal attempts at batting first. We toiled well in the field and kept them down to 189 on a very bouncy pitch! Brad Davenport yet again performed well with the ball taking 4/37, with Andrew Work and myself (Nat Elliott) chipping in with 2 wickets each. The next week was all Josh (Archie) Haussen’s. He scored over half the runs himself, finis hing on 97 not out – I thought 100 would have been justice but that still gives him something for next year! It was a great win!

Round 6 against Sheidow Park, the top team, was always going to be a tough one. We put them in and they notched up 258, showing us the benefits of having wickets in hand, as they put on over 100 in the last 10 overs. Glen Rosie and Dwayne Ruddock were the pick of the bowlers although having no luck. The next week we could only manage 133.

Round 7 was against Southern. We decided to bat first, and for the first time in the season we did ourselves justice with the bat and scored 6/243. I (Nat Elliott) scored 91 and Aaron Vander Wyst scored 84. The following week we bowled them out for 140 with Andrew Work the pick of the bowlers taking 5/34.

Round 8 against ICC Sharks began well with the ball, with us having the Sharks 6/70 and Andrew Work picking up 5 wickets for the game. Unfortunately the Sharks got away from us to go on to make a very respectable 9/204. Chasing 205 for victory we struggled with the bat to only make 175. Amongst a relatively ordinary batting display Kingsley Smith stood out with a well made 60 runs, supported by Mark Withers with 20 runs and Steve (Davo) Davenport with 14 runs.

Round 9 against Keswick saw us bat first and obtain a respectable 160 runs off 40 overs for the one day match on a small, fast ground at West Beach Primary School. Stand out performances with the bat included Brad Davenport with 45 runs, Manning Bailey and Kingsley Smith both with 28 runs and Andrew Work with 26 runs. Unfortunately Keswick came to the crease and took full advantage of their hard, fast home ground reaching our total 1 wicket down. Although only 1 wicket was captured, Glen Rosie bowled tightly, with 5 overs for 15 runs with 1 maiden.

Round 10 against Plympton Footballers saw the opposition bat first to post a total of 163 runs. Stand out performances with the ball included Robbie Spagnoletti in his debut B Grade game with 2/46 off 15 overs, Dwayne Ruddock with 2/19 off 8 overs and Brad Davenport with 2/21 off 8 overs. In response we passed the opposition total for the loss of 8 wickets. All-in-all it was a solid batting performance with stand out performances from Steve (Davo) Davenport with 40 runs, Phil Mayes with 31 runs and Manning Bailey with 28 runs. It was a well deserved win and a memorable debut game for Robbie Spagnoletti who looked at home with the ball in Section 2.

Round 11 against Warradale on the large, relatively slow Brighton High School oval saw Warradale bat first to post a respectable total of 243. It was a long day in the field for all, especially our bowlers with determined performances from all when fac ed with an opposition scoring well on their home ground. Kingsley Smith got 3/48, Dwayne Ruddock 3/68 and Damien (Dimi) Allen 2/22. In response our top order struggled to be 8/70 after a positive beginning from Adrian (Howie) Howard with a quick fire 21. Glen Rosie and Kevin O’Looney however wagged the tail with Glen being left stranded on 49 not out and Kevin a well earned 24 not out at the end of play. Unfortunately we only reached 158 for the loss of 9 wickets.

Andrew Work: Another good solid season from Andy. His bowling was very consistent and economical. The fact that he consistently picked up wickets and bagged a couple of 5 wicket hauls made him the standout bowler for B Grade this season and a deserved winner of the B Grade Bowling Trophy. Andy is also by far the cleanest hitter of a cricket ball in the B Grade. His batting this year has been consistent but I do think that with his talent he could be scoring more 50's and above. He also won the B Grade Batting Trophy this season, whic h should make some of the batsmen take note. Congratulations Andy, well done.

The Fielding Trophy went to one of the younger members of the team. He played his first game in B grade this season and managed to hold his spot throughout the season. His bowling improved with each match and his fielding was an asset from the first game. With his solid catching in the deep, fast ground fielding and with one of the best arms in club - well done Dwayne Ruddock.

My choice of Captain’s Trophy winner this year was a very easy decision. Along with being landed with the kit most weeks, he stepped in as captain for half a game against Morphettville Park and we won our first game. He then stepped up and captained the team for the last 4 games of the season. Cheers Phil Mayes and thanks for the support.

My (Nat’ s) personal highlight of the year was that I won 7 out of 7 tosses this season – does that make me the best tosser in the club this season (not the biggest!)?

Thought for next year: It is very important to win early games otherwise you play catch up for the rest of the season. One thing we need to do next season is apply ourselves with our batting early in the season to allow us to win these games.

Both Phil and I enjoyed captaining the B Grade this season and hope that everyone that played comes out again for a more successful 2008/2009 season.

This season was a disappointing one, with only 2 wins from 11 games in our first season in Section 4. This was in part due to the high number of players who passed through the C Grade, 37 different players in all. But whatever the reasons, the season is over now and it is time to look to the future and to ensure that the C Grade is a competitive team next season.

Highlights include our first win of the season against South Park in Round 7. South Park batted first and made 198. I (Mike Jenner) took 3/36, Malcolm (Harry) Lincoln took 2/21 and Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner took 2/57. Batting second we made 230. Tate Murray made 64, I (Mike Jenner) made 57, Adrian (Howie) Howard made 26 and David (Pegboy) Wright made 25.

Our second win came in Round 10 against Western Youth. Batting first, we made 335. Kevin O’Looney made 97 and only missed out on his first century after a rush of blood had him skying the ball to get caught and bowled. Next season Kev! Adrian (Cass) Cassidy made 55, Adrian (Howie) Howard made 53 and I (Mike Jenner) made 36. Batting second, Western Youth could only make 151. Dave Benson was the strike bowler, taking 4/42 off 11 overs.

Other good bowling performances include: myself (Mike Jenner) with 5/52 and 3/43, Shane Kennedy with 4/43 and 3/44, Damian (Dimi) Allen with 4/71, Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel with 4/85, Josh (Archie) Haussen with 3/41 and Scott Brodie with 3/59.

Other good batting performances include: Adrian (Howie) Howard with 82, 41 and 33, myself (Mike Jenner) with 78 and 43, Dave Benson with 47, Shane Kennedy with 46 not out, Kevin O’Looney with 44 not out and Brett Chilton with 40. Special mention must go to Ashley (Happy) Bryant for his 30 not out against Warradale – the only player to get into double figures that game, although no one got a duck!

I (Mike Jenner) ended up getting both the Bowling Trophy and Batting Trophy this season. Unfortunately, for me, this is more a reflection of the fact I was the only player to play all 11 games in the C Grade rather than of having a particularly good season.

The Fielding Trophy was won by Shane Kennedy on 6 votes, closely followed by Mark Willis and Adrian (Cass) Cassidy with 5 votes each. As a captain and a bowler, it is always good to have dedicated and athletic fielders like Shane in the team. Well done Shane!

Finally, I have decided to award the Captain’s Trophy to Kevin O’Looney. Although Kevin only joined the Ramblers this year he is a keen and competent cricketer who is always enthusiastic and involved. I hope he continues to play for the Ramblers for many years to come – and that he gets that elusive 100!

D GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

D grade this year had a middle of the road season, finishing sixth on the Premiership table. Game statistics are five wins, four losses and a couple of forfeits.

As a team we always fielded and caught well, with few dropped catches. The Fielding Trophy went to Ben Chilton this year. Always in the field he has put in 110% and put his body on the line. Even on hard grounds he has been sliding around and diving to take catches. Well done again Ben for this award!

No one really stood out with the ball, however Robbie Spagnoletti and Fraser Durham show great potential. The Bowling Trophy was shared between Robbie, Fraser and myse lf (Brett Chilton), all taking nine wickets each.

Batting wise there were great performances, one being Mark Withers smashing 154 in a one day game and another being Scott Brodie building an excellent innings of 115 which was an innings saver. Other good scores were Adrian (Howie) Howard 77, Brett Chilton 72, Ray Haussen 69, Ben Chilton 64 and Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner buildi ng a handy 55.

The Captain’s Trophy this year went to Peter Hough in recognition of his help and support throughout the season. Peter is a very experienced player so his help and advice on game plans proved to be invaluable. Thank you Peter.

In summary we all had a good season, we all had opportunities to do something for the team and in a lot of cases that certainly was achieved.

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR Hayden Hill joined the Ramblers in 1980/81 after he moved to South Australia from Sydney. Sport was Hayden’s thing. He played cricket in the summer and footy in the winter - too much sport was never enough.

In 4 seasons w ith the B Grade, Hayden won the Bowling Trophy 3 times and, when promoted to the A Grade for the next 4 seasons, he also won that Bowling Trophy 3 times. Hayden Hill could bow l and in 96 games in 9 seasons he took 244 wickets. This is a remarkable effort considering he battled cancer for almost 3 of the 9 years. In his 8 full seasons Hayden never missed a game, such was his commitment to and enthusiasm for the game of cricket.

Hayden died in 1990 after putting up a very brave fight. The Hayden Hill Most Promising Junior Award is awarded in memory of Hayden to a junior player (under 20 years of age) who displays just some of the qualities that Hayden displayed in his short time w ith us .

BUBBLES’ THOUGHTS

THREE GENERATIONS

Ma ny players have represented the Coromandel Ramblers over the years. We’ve had father and son combinations, brothers and even twins. But four families have produced something special – 3 generations of players.

The Jenners 1st generation – Eric Jenner 2nd generation – John Jenner, Andrew Jenner, Geoff Jenner 3rd generation – Michael Jenner, David Jenner

Eric basically filled in when we were short, playing 2 games and scoring 19 runs in 1973/74 and 1974/75. He had 3 sons. John played from 1973/74 to 1997/98 accumulating 117 games, 2546 runs at 25.0 and taking 61 wickets at 23.7. Andrew commenced in 1974/75. To date he has played 161 games, scoring 2172 runs at 19.1 and taking 141 wickets at 20.3. Geoff started in 1973/74 and has played 320 games. He has scored 3913 runs at 19.3 and holds the club record of 526 wickets at 17.0. Andrew’s son Michael started in 1994/95 and has played 150 games, scored 2290 runs at 22.0 and has taken 260 wickets at 19.7. Michael and father Andrew have both taken hat-tricks. Geoff’s son David joined the Ramblers in 1999/2000, played 32 games, scored 545 runs at 18.8 and has taken 7 wickets at 17.7. He currently plays for Belair.

The Jenner family have played 782 games for the Ramblers.

The Chiltons 1st generation – Des Chilton 2nd generation – Brett Chilton 3rd generation – Ben Chilton

Des Chilton played from 1954-73. He amassed 169 gamed, scored 1352 runs at 10.0 and took 418 wickets at 16.4. Des’ son Brett started in 1977/78. Brett has played 228 games, scored 4412 runs at 22.5 and taken 235 wickets at 19.5. Brett’s son Ben commenced playing in 1999/2000. He has played 64 games, scored 554 runs at 12.6 and taken 61 wickets at 24.1. An interesting statistic is that all three Chiltons have taken a hat-trick for the club. Des in fact has taken two.

The Chilton family have played 461 games for the club.

The Conlons/Spagnolettis 1st generation – David Conlon 2nd generation – Brentley Conlon 3rd generation – Robbie Spagnoletti

David Conlon is a club legend. He started in 1960/61 and retired a couple of years ago. David played 340 games, scored 9395 runs at 28.3 and took 138 wickets at 20.1. David’s son Brentley played one game but did not bat or bowl. Brentley’s step-son Robbie Spagnoletti commenced playing this season. He has played 9 games, scored 14 runs at 2.8 and taken 11 wickets at 29.2. David Conlon came out of retirement to play a game with Robbie this season.

The Conlon/Spagnoletti families have played 350 games for the club.

The Haussens 1st generation – Ray Haussen Senior 2nd generation – Ray Haussen Junior 3rd generation – Josh Haussen

Ray Haussen Senior played from 1972-4. He played 11 games, scoring 463 runs at 51.4 and taking 3 wickets at 1.7. He played cricket for Marion for many years as an opening batsman. For the two seasons he played for us in the 1970s he was a very solid left hand bat. Ray Haussen Junior played a few games for the Ramblers as a teenager and has returned this year to play for the same club as his son Josh. Altogether, Ray Junior has also played 11 games, scoring 147 runs at 14.7. Josh first started in 2006/07 and he has played 18 games, scoring 450 runs at 26.5 and taking 5 wickets at 25.8.

The Haussen family have played 40 games for the club. BUBBLES’ FUNNIES

AROUND THE WICKETS

Coromandel Ramblers ex-coach Tony Benson has just returned from a recruiting trip to Japan, where he has signed up Japan’s top cricketer Jarrad Benson. Tony claims that Jarrad will be returning in 2008. Haven’t we heard that one before Tony?

The club’s new coach this year was Ashley Bryant whose nickname is ‘Happy’. So the club has gone from Grumpy to Happy with one coaching appointment.

Speaking of nicknames, we noticed the nickname of Nappies on Matthew Smith’s t-shirt. We aren’t sure of the origin of this nickname but it certainly is very appropriate. Nappies are often full of shit aren’t they?

Veteran pace bowler Peter Hough caused a stir in a recent D Grade game when a young opposition player was heard to remark “I reckon that little old guy throws them”.

Noticed in the Blackwood High School Athletics Records that Glen Rosie still holds the record for the shot-put – 11.16 metres. Coromandel Ramblers needn’t worry, Glen has assured us he will be at Weymouth Oval next season and not at the Olympics in China.

The Ramblers Quiz Night was a big success, raising some $3000. Gyprock’s table won the competition but was criticised by some for having 14 people. Gyprock dismissed the criticism by claiming his table was handicapped. I mean they did have Gottschey and Johnsy on the team.

An interesting sight at Hawthorndene a few weeks ago… After receiving an LBW decision, Paul Durham was seen trying to chop down a large gum tree with his bat. Someone should buy him an axe ready for next season.

Club legend Robin Gross was in the wars again this season. To check if his new garden mulcher was working he stuck his hand in it. Guess what? It was working but Grossy’s right hand index finger isn’t.

David ‘Bubbles’ Neil was another player to suffer a health problem. He had a stroke just before the season started. One senior player who has watched him bat for 30 years claimed he’d never seen Bubbles play a decent stroke.

It was good to see Damian Allen back in the nets after his knee re-construction. His deliveries were quick and lifted sharply off a good length. He also got notable swing and cut from most deliveries. Yes it makes a big difference when you’re running the bowling machine.

Haven’t seen Brett Brodie all summer. I guess the rumours are true. Brett only comes out to play after Christmas if one or more teams are in the finals.

At a recent Association meeting an S. Davenport from Ramblers A Grade was reported by the opposition for sledging. It prompted a couple of interesting comments from the Executive such as, “I didn’t know Steve was still playing A Grade”, and “what’s Steve done now?” Fortunately it was Sam and not Steve who was in trouble.

Noticed the Coca-Cola is honouring one of its long serving workers. Yes Wayne ’the Hoff’ Hasel has had his batting average printed on a particular line of Coca-Cola. You may have seen it in the shops. It’s called Coke Zero.

It has also come to our attention that Adrian Cassidy still holds the record for the 100 and 200 metre sprints in the Blackwood High Athletics Records. That’s great news as with some of the financial deals Adrian is involved in I reckon he would want to be able to run pretty quickly.

Mike Jenner was criticised for not tossing the coin in a recent game. Mike has assured us that he will rectify the problem next year by making each toss a best of three.

So ends our report for the season. Keep an eye out for our roving Ne ws Hound next season as you never know where or when he will appear...
