  • MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series
MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan.

  • Applying Feminist Criticism to Classic Country
Jordan 1 Ethan Jordan 23 February 2016 Guitar Strings and Broken Jukeboxes: Applying Feminist Criticism to Classic Country In Lois Tyson’s book Critical Theory Today she constructs a chapter explaining the use of feminist criticism in literature. Tyson’s explanation of this school of thought inspired the idea of examining county music through a feminist lens. Various questions began to emerge as I listened to the genre, and as I tried to align everything on a timeline, I found myself shackled in mass confusion. I had originally wanted to examine the genre without using an exclusive lens; however, as I worked through years of music I started seeing a trend unfold. The idea of traditional gendered roles and the patriarchy seems to be a common thread throughout the genre; someone is always in support of the societal pressures that gender highlighted, along with someone’s disapproval. This allows for feminist criticism to act as an overarching framework for the genre. By using Tyson’s theoretical and critical instructions a system can be developed in which we can interpret the classic country text to examine the binary oppositions of artist who encourage traditional gender roles and those who oppose it, along with a brief look at track length will argue that Country music has kept women inside the domestic sphere. Cecelia Tichi’s book High Lonesome: the American Culture of Country Music she inserts a question that helps align the perspectives of scholars when engaging with the classic country text: What does country music have in common with

  • Country Music in the Modern Era: 1940S-1970S New World NW 207
Country Music in the Modern Era: 1940s-1970s New World NW 207 Country music is a commercial art. The music's artistic development is intertwined with the growth of those institutions that helped or hindered the performance of the music. Radio shows, record companies, and television networks have all had a place in the story. Great artists have left their mark on country music's sound, and great executives have had an equal influence on the music by affecting its packaging and availability. The term "country music" came into use only gradually in the years following World War II. "Hillbilly music" had been the term used to characterize the music of the white rural South, but after the war the style came under the influence of popular music and an urban audience, and as the music changed "hillbilly" became less and less accurate. The period between World War II and the middle seventies has generally been one of growth in the audience for this most native of American music traditions. In the twenties and thirties country material was essentially folk music placed on disc. By the end of the thirties the music had diversified to a considerable degree, but much hillbilly music continued to reflect British and American folk song. It was most frequently recorded on location in the South and Southwest. Powerful radio stations like Chicago's WLS and Nashville's WSM broadcast live country music to a growing audience. Bob Wills and his jazz influenced western swing thrilled thousands of country fans in the Southwest. Yet, despite these signs of musical growth and diversity, hillbilly music remained unfocused in the thirties.

  • Ask One of His Countless Fans – Or Even One of His Peers, and They Will Tell You That Sammy Kershaw Definitely Qualifies As a Country Music Original
Ask one of his countless fans – or even one of his peers, and they will tell you that Sammy Kershaw definitely qualifies as a Country Music original. In a day and age where individuality isn’t something that is sought out as much as Before, when you hear a Sammy Kershaw song about heartbreak, love, or good times – you know who it is. You don’t have to Be told. And, in a career that has seen some amazing highs over the past thirty- five years, the Best – as they say – is yet to come. Growing up in Kaplan, Louisiana, Kershaw was enthralled with the masters at an early age – names like Conway Twitty, Mel Street, and George Jones. In fact, as a teenager, Kershaw had developed such a reputation for his vocals – even then – that he was often called upon to open for those acts, and others like them. Jones was so impressed with Sammy that he frequently used him on his shows whenever he was playing in the region. Of all the artists that Kershaw has worked with over the years, it very well might Be Jones that left the most impact. From the moment that he released his deBut single for Mercury Records, “Cadillac Style,” critics and fans all made the comparison. Rather than run from them, Kershaw emBraced them. After all, that stone Country sound was what Sammy Kershaw was all about – and that’s what he was going to give his fans! “Cadillac Style” made it all the way to No. 3 on the BillBoard charts, and from there (to quote Jones), the race was on! Follow-ups such as “Don’t Go Near The Water” and “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore” established him as one of the finest traditional artists of his time, while records like “Yard Sale” showed that haunting Jones influence was very much a part of everything he is about.
