The long-awaited grading policy, which could affect the city’s competitive admissions process for middle and high schools, urges schools to con- sider the uncertainty students may still face sev- en months into the coronavirus crisis. Even now, children may have spotty access to reliable in- ternet and devices. Some teachers appeared to be caught off guard by the new guidelines, even though report cards are due soon at some schools. You might have pandemic fatigue By Jay Maddock The Conversation As the pandemic drags on, following COVID-19 prevention guidelines can feel like more and more of a challenge. This kind of fatigue is not unique to pandem- ic precautions like sticking with social distanc- ing, masking up and keeping your hands washed. With all kinds of health-related behavior chang- es – including increasing physical activity, eating healthy and decreasing tobacco use – at least half of people relapse within six months. Think back to the start of April. Much of the United States was under stay-at-home orders. New York City was experiencing close to a thou- sand COVID-19 deaths a day, and new cases of this previously unknown disease were popping up all over the country. Coronavirus fears had people either ordering necessities for delivery or rushing through stores as fast as possible, avoiding everyone. When they got home, shoppers wiped down their groceries, vigorously washed hands, maybe even took a shower and changed into clean clothes. People got used to staying home. Today, there’s still no cure or vaccine for the coronavirus, and infection numbers are on the rise. Almost a quarter of a million Americans have died from COVID-19 and the risk of infection remains. Now is the time to strengthen your resolve and re-devote yourself to prevention measures. But fewer in the U.S. are reporting the fear that triggered all those germ-avoiding actions in the spring. Why? As a public health researcher who investigates health behaviors, I know there are several psycho- logical reasons for why fatigue sets in. Luckily the research also suggests some tactics to help you stay safe as well as protect your mental health and well-being. Postal data through Oct. 9, released through a federal court order, show nearly all the agen- cy’s delivery regions missing its target of having at least 95 percent of first-class mail arrive with- in five days. Parts of the presidential battleground states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn- sylvania and Ohio fell short of delivery goals by wide margins as the agency struggles to regain its footing after a tumultuous summer. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be listening to Nash. “Steve is great, and I have a relationship with him that’s going to build over time,” Irving said on his podcast back on Oct. 1. Fortunately, Nash won’t have to wait to build a relationship with Stoudemire, who he has known since rejoining the Suns in 2004 following a stint in Dallas. Lee designated Oct. 27 as “Commonpoint Queens Day” during a celebration commending the organization’s efforts to reach neighbors in need. To mark the milestone, Commonpoint asked students about the equivalent of one million pounds. Students’ answers ranged from “a whole train” to “a ginormous rainbow.” For the thousands of Queens residents who received food through the organization’s distribu- tion efforts, a million pounds meant being able to put food on the table. “I am incredibly proud of this truly outstand- ing organization and the errands of mercy they’ve performed,” tweeted Councilmember Barry Gro- denchik. Commonpoint has worked with Lee’s office, elected officials, community groups and corporate partners to distribute food since March, when the COVID crisis exacerbated existing food insecuri- ty in Queens. Since then, lines at food pantries across the borough have continued to grow while funding has dwindled. Several mutual aid networks have formed to help residents access food.
