AREYC I am part of a collective of academics, early years practitioners and activists looking at challenging racism and exploring /sharing tangible actions within the early years in Scotland. We are called AREYC and would like to invite you to the launch of our collective which is a webinar followed by a discussion co-hosted by CERES (Moray House) and RACE.Ed (University of Edinburgh). I have appended our event details below and if you are on Twitter, you are most welcome to follow us on @AREYCScotland. We would love to have you with us for these critical conversations and tangible actions and also believe that dialogue should and will be ongoing. Please feel free to get in touch should you have any queries about this event or us. Very best wishes, Pavi (Pavithra Atul Sarma) Who Defines Childhood Innocence? Digital volunteers First of all, another plea for volunteers willing to help and advise tech newcomers on how to get online and communicate with the outside world in this digital age. This is the current focus of the partnership between Heart of Newhaven and Pilmeny Development Project (PDP). We urge more volunteers to come forward who could offer such support to those older people who are feeling particularly lonely and isolated by the pandemic and lockdown restrictions. Training is provided by PDP and the next induction dates are May 12th or May 18th. If anyone is interested please contact [email protected] AGM Of course the big news this month is the holding of our first ever AGM as a SCIO. This took place on Thursday 29th April and was attended, either online or in person, by 38 members. Business Plan One matter that was raised at the AGM was that of how HoNC will support itself after the purchase of the site. The Business Plan which was submitted and assessed by CEC last year, is available through a link on the HoNC website. If you would like to read it, you can find the link on the Our Journey So Far webpage. School Delay Unfortunately there has been a further delay to the building of the new Victoria Primary School. The school was informed last week that Covid restrictions on the number of workers who can be on site at the same time, as well as the delay in some building supplies arriving from Europe, have meant that it will not now be possible for the school to move in over the summer holidays. It is still hoped to get everything finished by the autumn but there is no fixed date yet. We will keep you informed. Finally, there are always new HoNC features being posted online. Check out our YouTube channel for recent videos of support from the Living Memory Association and one of our volunteers, along with the earlier ones from the History of Education Centre and some of our trustees. Remember there are also monthly blogs going up on the website. Happy viewing and reading. The SYP represents Scotland’s young people. Democratically elected members ensure that young people’s voices are heard by decision-makers. The SYP represents an excellent opportunity for young people to influence the decisions that affect their lives. Recent successful campaigns have contributed to votes for 16 year olds, free bus travel for young people (due later this year), and the move to incorporate UNCRC into law. We are very keen that we have a range of candidates that represent the demographic of Edinburgh so that a wide variety of voices can be heard. All young people aged between 14 and 25 years old can stand for election to the SYP, and for all those involved the SYP represents an outstanding learning opportunity. More information is available on the SYP website: www.syp.org.uk , including about their next campaign, Bounce Back, which will focus on the response to the pandemic and its aftermath https://syp.org.uk/campaign/bounce-back/ We hope that every young person who is passionate about making a difference, changing things and/or helping other young people will consider standing for election. We are asking youth workers, teachers, social workers and others who work with young people who may be interested in standing to encourage them to find out more - or find out more on their behalf. For more information, please contact SYP Election Coordinator:Jackie Barr [email protected] We hope you can join us for our second Thrive conference Thrive Edinburgh is a city where every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to her or his community. • The Jams' and the KLF's Invocation of Mu
CHART MYTHOS The JAMs’ and The KLF’s Invocation of Mu [Received August 18th 2016; accepted September 22nd 2016 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.10.2.07] Jon Fitzgerald <[email protected]> Southern Cross UniversitY Philip Hayward <[email protected]> Kagoshima UniversitY Research Center for the Pacific Islands and UniversitY of TechnologY SYdneY ABSTRACT: The JAMs and The KLF, two overlapping popular music ensembles led by British multi-media performers JimmY CautY and Bill Drummond, were notable for both the success theY had with a batch of singles in the late 1980s and early 1990s and the complex mythologY theY constructed and celebrated in song lYrics, music videos, press releases and short films. KeY to their mYthological project was their association with the fictional lost island-continent of Mu (with the band name JAMs being an abbreviation for ‘Justified Ancients of Mu Mu’). The latter identitY was derived from Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s Illuminatus trilogY of novels in which the aforementioned “ancients” were a secret brotherhood involved in combatting the rival Illuminati, who originated in Atlantis. As the JAMS’ and KLF’s oeuvres progressed, aspects of Mu and Atlantis were synthesised by CautY and Drummond with elements of other actual and fictional islands. The article traces the initial imagination and representation of Mu in esoteric crYpto-historical literature, its rearticulation in Shea and Wilson’s counter-cultural novels and its invocation and function in CautY and Drummond’s work with The JAMs and The KLF. • Orbital I the Orb Na Soundedit
Orbital i The Orb na Soundedit The Orb pojawi się w Łodzi podczas 10. edycji Festiwalu Soundedit. Zespół wystąpi w czwartek, 25 października 2018 r. w Klubie Wytwórnia (ul. Łąkowa 29). Natomiast 26 października (piątek) zagrają: zimnofalowa legenda The Opposition oraz kultowo-klubowa Morcheeba. 27 października (sobota) wystąpią: Mery Spolsky, Nosowska i Giorgio Moroder. Tego samego dnia odbędzie się uroczysta Gala wręczenia nagrody "Człowieka ze Złotym Uchem". The Orb założyli w 1988 r. Alex Paterson oraz Jimmy Cauty, którzy są absolutnymi pionierami ambient house. Ich pomysł na muzykę elektroniczną to spowolnione, bardziej uduchowione rytmy. The Orb wystąpi podczas 10. edycji Festiwalu Soundedit. Po opuszczeniu Killing Joke w 1986 r., Paterson spotkał się Jimmy'ego Cauty, a duet zaczął występować razem jako The Orb w legendarnym londyńskim klubie The Land of Oz. Wspólne muzykowanie w naturalny sposób przerodziło się w nagrywanie płyt. Następnie Patterson i Youth założyli wytwórnię płytową WAU!/Mr. Modo Records. W 1990 r. wydali klasyczny już singiel "Little Fluffy Clouds", na którym wykorzystano fragmenty kompozycji "Electric Counterpoint" Steve'a Reicha. Utwór został odnotowany na 275 pozycji listy "New Musical Express" 500 najważniejszych utworów wszechczasów. W 1991 r. The Orb zarejestrowało swój pierwszy album "The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld", na którym znalazł się również wspomniany singiel.

All musical instruments, all forms of recorded music, gone. A world without music. What is more, you cannot even remember what music sounded like or how it was made. You can only remember that it had existed, that it had been important to you and your civilisation. And you long to hear it once more. Then imagine people coming together to make music with nothing but their voices, and with no knowledge of what music should sound like.1 In March of 2009 the writer, artist and musician Bill Drummond visited the University of Northampton to orchestrate a performance of his ad hoc choir project, The 17, with my students on the BA Popular Music course. Bill had attended the University in its 1 Bill Drummond, 17 (London, 2008), p. 1. 1 previous incarnation as an art college in the 1970s and was already due to orchestrate another 17 performance in conjunction with the town’s Fishmarket Gallery the following day, so he seemed happy enough to appear at the university and talk to the students about The 17 project, music, the arts and his work more widely.

MENU SIGN IN CULTURE Doctorin’ the tower: KLF maverick in a small Antrim town Bill Drummond, who once burned £1m as half of the KLF, is behind a left-field endeavour at Curfew Tower in Cushendall Artist Yonatan Levy’s staging of a reading from Ulysses. Photograph: Tracey Moberly Paul Duane Topics: Anne Devlin Bill Drummond Glenn Patterson Jimmy Cauty Levy Yonatan Raymond Watson Seamus Heaney Tracey Moberly Wed, Oct 7, 2015, 15:41 1 Recommend 376 Tweet Sunset in Cushendall, Co Antrim, and people gather around a bonfire at the imposing, red sandstone Curfew Tower in anticipation of a very unusual literary event in a unique artistic residency. Every August, during the Heart of the Glens festival, a prize of a bronze model of the 19th-century tower is awarded to a piece of art judged by the local community to be the best one produced during the year’s residency. The awards ceremony is overseen by the tower’s owner, Bill Drummond, a man famous for, among other things, burning an awful lot of money as the KLF and making a novelty record, Doctorin’ the Tardis, that sold more than a million copies. The Curfew Tower residency started quite by accident in 1995, when Drummond, having left the music business, was looking for a building to house a book he was working on, Bad Wisdom. Only one copy of the book would be made, bound in reindeer skin and designed to last a thousand years. Like a modern-day Book of Kells, interested parties would have to travel to the tower to view it.

Gaitán and culture has become almost exclusively centered on the issue of money. Displeasure and outrage have quickly emerged from private into public discussions about the governmental resolution to reduce its spending – a resolution made by resolute bureaucrats whose reasoning they have kept mostly to themselves, in spite of the (suspiciously) spectacular tactics used to publicize their radical decisions. According to the rumors and the numbers, the cuts will affect institutions across the board. National museums will lose 20% of their operating budgets, presentation houses (of which an as of yet undisclosed six will remain) an equal or higher amount. Music, theatre, and dance are in no better shape. Neither are individual artists, who now face a 50% reduction in available funds.

  • Little Fluffy Clouds’ and the Sampler As Time Machine
8 AMBIENT HOUSE: ‘LITTLE FLUFFY CLOUDS’ AND THE SAMPLER AS TIME MACHINE Justin Morey This chapter presents a case study of perhaps The Orb’s best-known release, “Little Fluffy Clouds”.1 Building on Kevin Holm-Hudson’s2 previous work, I argue that the use of multiple copyrighted samples from a range of sources, times and locations, allows the record to function at different levels of listener attention, and, moreover, allows the listener to construct different narratives and connections depending on their personal sociocultural and musicological knowledge and perceptions. With reference to the work of Jean-Jacques Nattiez3 and Philip Tagg4 on musical communication I will argue that Brian Eno’s original intention for ambient music to create a “sense of doubt and uncertainty”5 is maintained in “Little Fluffy Clouds” through use of the sampler as a time machine that presents multiple realities simultaneously, and thereby allows multiple levels of symbolic meaning to be created. Some thought is also given to the ability of both ambient music and ambient house to create emotional effects through the power of memory and nostalgia. 1 The Orb, Little Fluffy Clouds, (Vinyl) (UK: Big Life – BLR 33T, 1990). 2 Kevin Holm-Hudson, “Quotation and Context: Sampling and John Oswald’s Plunderphonics,” Leonardo Music Journal (7) (Cambridge, MA.: MIT Press, 1997): 17-25. 3 Jean-Jacques Nattiez, Music and Discourse: Toward a Semiology of Music (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1990). 4 Philip Tagg, Music’s Meanings: a modern musicology for non-musos (New York: The Mass Media Music Scholars’ Press, 2015). 5 Brian Eno, ‘Ambient Music’, liner notes from Ambient 1: Music for Airports (LP) (UK: Editions E.G., AMB 001, 1978).
