AREYC I am part of a collective of academics, early years practitioners and activists looking at challenging racism and exploring /sharing tangible actions within the early years in Scotland. We are called AREYC and would like to invite you to the launch of our collective which is a webinar followed by a discussion co-hosted by CERES (Moray House) and RACE.Ed (University of Edinburgh). I have appended our event details below and if you are on Twitter, you are most welcome to follow us on @AREYCScotland. We would love to have you with us for these critical conversations and tangible actions and also believe that dialogue should and will be ongoing. Please feel free to get in touch should you have any queries about this event or us. Very best wishes, Pavi (Pavithra Atul Sarma) Who Defines Childhood Innocence? Digital volunteers First of all, another plea for volunteers willing to help and advise tech newcomers on how to get online and communicate with the outside world in this digital age. This is the current focus of the partnership between Heart of Newhaven and Pilmeny Development Project (PDP). We urge more volunteers to come forward who could offer such support to those older people who are feeling particularly lonely and isolated by the pandemic and lockdown restrictions. Training is provided by PDP and the next induction dates are May 12th or May 18th. If anyone is interested please contact [email protected] AGM Of course the big news this month is the holding of our first ever AGM as a SCIO. This took place on Thursday 29th April and was attended, either online or in person, by 38 members. Business Plan One matter that was raised at the AGM was that of how HoNC will support itself after the purchase of the site. The Business Plan which was submitted and assessed by CEC last year, is available through a link on the HoNC website. If you would like to read it, you can find the link on the Our Journey So Far webpage. School Delay Unfortunately there has been a further delay to the building of the new Victoria Primary School. The school was informed last week that Covid restrictions on the number of workers who can be on site at the same time, as well as the delay in some building supplies arriving from Europe, have meant that it will not now be possible for the school to move in over the summer holidays. It is still hoped to get everything finished by the autumn but there is no fixed date yet. We will keep you informed. Finally, there are always new HoNC features being posted online. Check out our YouTube channel for recent videos of support from the Living Memory Association and one of our volunteers, along with the earlier ones from the History of Education Centre and some of our trustees. Remember there are also monthly blogs going up on the website. Happy viewing and reading. The SYP represents Scotland’s young people. Democratically elected members ensure that young people’s voices are heard by decision-makers. The SYP represents an excellent opportunity for young people to influence the decisions that affect their lives. Recent successful campaigns have contributed to votes for 16 year olds, free bus travel for young people (due later this year), and the move to incorporate UNCRC into law. We are very keen that we have a range of candidates that represent the demographic of Edinburgh so that a wide variety of voices can be heard. All young people aged between 14 and 25 years old can stand for election to the SYP, and for all those involved the SYP represents an outstanding learning opportunity. More information is available on the SYP website: www.syp.org.uk , including about their next campaign, Bounce Back, which will focus on the response to the pandemic and its aftermath https://syp.org.uk/campaign/bounce-back/ We hope that every young person who is passionate about making a difference, changing things and/or helping other young people will consider standing for election. We are asking youth workers, teachers, social workers and others who work with young people who may be interested in standing to encourage them to find out more - or find out more on their behalf. For more information, please contact SYP Election Coordinator:Jackie Barr [email protected] We hope you can join us for our second Thrive conference Thrive Edinburgh is a city where every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to her or his community. Our ability to thrive as human beings and as a city is closely tied to our mental health. Since our inaugural conference in November 2019, Thrive has been working to implement our aspirations for Edinburgh alongside people who have committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of the citizens of Edinburgh. Over the last year we have continued to work with our partners in the development of Thrive’s long-term strategic aims. The response to pandemic has been amazing with individuals and organisations continuing to deliver innovative and creative support for mental health and wellbeing. We hope you can join us at our second Thrive Edinburgh Conference. Get Your Thrive On! will be held on Friday 7 May 2021. Chaired by the Lord Provost, Frank Ross, this interactive online conference offers a fantastic opportunity to come together to hear about, discuss and connect on work aligned with our 4 guiding principles – Change the Conversation, Change the Culture; Act Early; Partnering with Communities and using Data and Evidence to drive and create Change - and discuss and share future aspirations.
