JO HEARD MEMORIAL TROPHY NOMINATION

“CORRIB PARK NED KELLY”- NEDDY

I would like to nominate my purebred Connemara gelding, Neddy, for the Jo Heard Memorial Trophy, as I believe he is a great example of how the Connemara is as ideally suited for the very mature rider, as well as being a brilliant mount for children.

I bought Ned as a 6 month old, (D.O.B. 21/10/2010), and we are enjoying a wonderful journey so far. He has been an angel from day one. I had an idea in the back of my mind that I would like to have a go at . As he matured, we did some ridden obstacle courses, trail rides, bush and beach, started dressage and began jumping about 6 years old. There was a setback when he was diagnosed with E.M.S. in March 2018, and after about a year out, with careful diet, exercise and shoeing, he is now 100%.

I was recently asked by the organiser, Nicole Magoffin, to bring Ned to the 2020 Qld State Dressage/Brisbane CDN (19/9/2020), to be part of her display “It doesn’t have to be a to do dressage”. The huge covered arena didn’t faze Ned, and according to Nicole, with the live streaming, Ned now has a fan club.

We recently went Maryborough ODE, and have done 2 now. Ned was superb throughout all 3 phases, and carried me home safely. I’m officially hooked – can’t wait for the next ones!

Ned wins hearts wherever he goes, and in a cross-country clinic recently Brett Cantle said to me, “I wish more ladies like you would ride ponies like this – they would have a lot more fun, and be a lot safer”.

My only regret is I didn’t have a “Ned” 50 years ago!

Every (very) mature rider needs a Ned – go out, embrace life & have fun!!

Nomination for the Jo Heard Memorial Award 2020 Emerald Valley Blue Gum

This is Bluey’s story. A chance meeting at Equitana 1999 with Linda & Colin Gulbrandson brought Bluey into my life, & he was yet to be born!! Once I saw his lovely sire, Monahan Gumnut, & dam, Killarney Park Polly McQuinn, I was hooked. I really wanted a colt, with 4 black feet & no white markings, & a few weeks later Bluey was born, he was everything I wished for. I visited with Bluey over the next 6 months, he was always happy to come a see me, & I feel our great relationship is due to the fact that I was able to play with him at such an early age. Finally came the day to bring him home & integrate him into our herd. My old pony Cassie, a part bred Connemara, & the dominant boss of the herd took Bluey under his wing. They had so much fun together playing “stallions”. Fast forward 3 years & it was time to start him under saddle, he was more than ready as I had done loads of groundwork with him, he even begged to have the saddle put on when he was a yearling!! So, then our great adventures began, we went everywhere together, the trails, the beach, street parades, clinics & demo’s, on cattle drives & musters in the high country, droving cattle down the roads that lead to Cradle Mountain was always interesting, especially to tourists who couldn’t believe their eyes. We competed at only one event, a “Trail Ride Gymkhana”, which comprised of on line, liberty, & ridden sections, he was in his element!! Bluey & I journeyed together through the Parelli Natural Horsemanship programme, & I believe he inspired a lot of people, some of whom went on to buy their own Connemara ponies. I am very proud of this achievement. To me the relationship I have with my pony is the most important thing in life. He has given first time pony rides to many children & adults & my proudest moment was when he was ridden less by a Grand Prix level Dressage rider, a very special lady who loves him too. He is the most loving & giving pony I have ever known; he is always there to greet me in the mornings, & now at 20 years of age is enjoying semi-retirement on the farm and the occasional trail ride. So, thank you Bluey for the past 20 years of absolute joy, I am so lucky to have you in my life.

Jo Heard Memorial Trophy 2020

Nomination

Sugargum Las Vegas

I am nominating my gelding Sugargum Las Vegas (Vegas) for the Jo Heard Memorial Trophy as I believe he is a worthy candidate. Vegas is a 10-year-old part bred, 13.1 hh and although small in height he can mix it up with the larger horses in a lot of events he competes in. He is ridden by a diverse age group of riders in multiple disciplines as we like our horses to have a go at everything.

He was bred by Janene Leslie who has the Sugargum stud and we have owned Vegas for 4 years.

I am the senior (over 60) rider of Vegas and I ride him in HRCAV events and we done very well at these events both in the ring and online. I have also ridden him in a HRCAV navigation ride which consisted of a trail ride and an obstacle course. We have also competed in fancy dress barrel races and gymkhana events as well as the general trail riding and farm riding. We have competed successfully in dressage, both at Aonach and with the Leeton dressage club. Currently with the covid restrictions and no live events to go to we are practicing our challenge obstacles (just for something different). With these obstacles we go over a bridge, reverse through a maze, side pass over a pole, walk over a tarp, and walk through some hanging pool noodles and then have a go at our cow cutter. Vegas has given me a lot of confidence with riding as he is a very uncomplicated pony to ride and very sure footed and looks after his old rider. Vegas has done very well in the Connemara Performance Awards since we have owned him both in hand and under saddle.

My 28-year-old daughter, Bec Bell is another rider of Vegas and they have competed and done well at various Connemara events such as Aonach. They compete at everything at Aonach- dressage, show hunter, jumping, best presented and the family challenge. This team is very competitive at Aonach. One thing I am super proud of competing in is the Aonach family challenge which Vegas and our team of 3 riders have won for the last 2 years, a great effort as he is up against much larger and faster horses in this event. Bec and Vegas have also competed in gymkhana events and have placed in the local team penning event. They competed successfully a few years ago at Canberra in the National Capital in the show hunter events in both the led and ridden and the show hunter challenge.

Vegas’s other rider is 15-year-old Jade Smith who has ridden him successfully at Aonach and at many of our regional show events. Jade and Vegas won the supreme led at Leeton show in 2018. We were particularly thrilled about as there were some very classy horses up against him. Jade has also helped train Vegas for his competitions and this pair love to fang around the cross-country course at our farm and over any jump they can find (which is great as his old owner and rider is not into jumping).

Vegas’s youngest rider is 7-year-old Gabby Sosso who has ridden him at local gymkhana sporting events in recent years and a few local ag shows in ring events. Gabby and Vegas have won lots of ribbons together and it is great to see the big smile of Gabby’s face when she is riding Vegas. Gabby has also had fun swimming Vegas in our lake in summer time and trail riding him on a lead with other riders. Vegas has several nick names – one of which is Sparkle pony. This came about when he went in a fancy-dress barrel race a few years ago with my daughter and he was covered in a reflective silver cloth as part of his outfit (hence the sparkle look). The name has stuck as he is noticed at most events he competes in and people cannot help but comment on how cute he is etc.

On the weekend we had friends visit and their 3-year-old son is horse mad and so Vegas was the pony he rode bareback (on a lead) and the rider could not stop smiling.

In my opinion, Vegas is a great all-round pony who competes (quiet successfully) at a diverse range of disciplines from dressage, , sporting, trail riding, showing and chasing cows. He has to put up getting dressed up for some events and is ridden by various riders of different ages and skill levels (the oldest probably being the least skilled). He gives his all when competing and has given his somewhat nervous older rider (me) a lot of confidence as I never thought I would be competing successfully at the events I enter. His riders have had a lot of fun riding Vegas in the various events they have competed in, and being successful is an added bonus. While Vegas has been performing successfully at his various events with his riders, he is also promoting the Connemara breed as we get many positive comments of what a great pony he is.

Jo Heard Memorial Trophy nomination: Glenormiston Ballymalloe

It was 2007 when we bought the 5YO unbroken mare ‘Glenormiston Ballymalloe’, Ashley was 7!

We had purchased our very first Connemara ‘Glenormiston Kilian’ from Sue Clarke a couple of years earlier and knowing what an amazing pony he was we decided to purchase his full sister.

A big strong mare, Jonathan broke her in but said she would be way too much horse for a little girl but Ashley was determined that she was her horse and that she would ride her! We started in the round yard, progressed to the bigger yard and then straight out the gate. They never looked back!

Bally took Ash from her to jumping A Grade Pony club with every adventure imaginable in between. From swimming in the dam to Showjumping, mustering at home to Eventing, Bally dealt with the whole ‘pretty in pink’ phase without a care in the world and looked after Ashley like only a Connemara Pony can. From literally jumping poles on the ground to 1.20m Bally and Ash were an amazing combination and absolute best friends!

When Ash moved on to Henry, Bally was turned out in the paddock for a life of leisure. Unfortunately, being a Mum was never really on her agenda but there was never any thought of selling her, she was Ashley’s forever horse! After 5 years of retirement we knew where Bally belonged and that was with another little girl to love her and we knew exactly who that little girl was!

So off to Queensland went Bally to Ellie Stenzel, to teach her the ropes of showjumping along with partaking in dressage days, mustering and mail box rides. To quote Kelly Stenzel … ‘Every ride is one Ellie wants to never end, it is a constant demand for “just one more jump”, “five more minutes” or “one more go”. For that, we will be forever grateful. Bally is an extraordinary mare and we are extremely lucky to have had her in our home and hearts.’ Bally has now returned home and is teaching young children to ride with the guidance of Ashley. She is truly a one in a million mare and we feel so privileged to have had Bally come into our lives!

I would like to nominate Jawarra Baron (rego’d partbred gelding by Castle Baron) for the Sue Clarke Memorial Award.

I believe Baron has been a great ambassador for the Connemara Breed in Australia having competed and won at state and national level as an open hunter galloway and in breed classes across 5 different societies and associations.

He has carried both junior and adult riders of all ages to places and wins, always ensuring to carry his rider safely while giving his all.

Noteable current results - (please note he was previously shown as a small hunter before receiving a height certificate)

Plus, an endless list of Ag show wins; he never comes home without broad ribbons.

Baron has a big heart and kind soul; he loves cuddles, minties and throwing his dinner everywhere. He is the most challenging yet rewarding horse I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning, training, campaigning and sharing with a multitude of people who have come to love him as much as I have.

He truly is one in a million and a great representation of the Connemara breed.

Kind regards,

Alana Hogan

Sue Clarke Memorial Award Nomination: Highlands Mr Henrysee

Highlands Mr Henrysee is a 12-year-old Connemara Sporthorse by Glenormiston Bartley out of the mare Strong Caper, who has excelled in the fields of Eventing, Showjumping, Pony Club and Stockman’s Challenges to name a few.

‘Henry’, ridden and educated by Ashley Randle, has been NSW State Champion Eventer as well as Reserve Champion on another occasion. He has represented on the Zone team at Sydney Royal Easter Show in Showjumping and has also been a member of the NSW State Team competing at Pony Club Nationals in Toowoomba. As well as these National and State achievements he has also won numerous local Pony Club events to the highest level offered by Pony Club.

As a Connemara Sporthorse Henry has been awarded the National Connemara Partbred title from the Connemara Pony Breeders Society of Australia (CPBSA) as well as achieving Gold Status within the breed, being the highest accolade awarded by the Society.

Within open Eventing competition in Australia, Henry has won numerous events including both the Junior and Open Titles at Equestrian Australia (EA) events up to the level of 105, now known as 1 *.

Henry has also competed at The King of the Ranges Stockmans Challenge and in 2019 (his first year in Novice competition) he won the Cross-Country phase, placed 2nd in the Bareback phase and was awarded the gear check and turnout prize for fitness and presentation. Only 3 weeks after competing in the King of the Ranges Stockmans Challenge, Henry competed at the Upper Hunter Show in the Showjumping, winning the Open 105cm class against graded showjumping horses. His versatility is truly amazing and the level of success that he has achieved both locally and Nationally is quite remarkable.

Henry is a horse that has been solely educated by Ashley from about the age of 12 and has an amazing temperament and can do attitude. He is an absolute pleasure to work with and compete, a true credit to his breed and himself as an individual. Henry has competed from the Connemara Pony Showcase in Werribee to the National Pony Club Championships in Toowoomba and nearly every other venue in between. It is a testament to his temperament and trainability that he excels in almost any discipline that he is asked to tackle.

A more kind hearted and genuine pony you will not find!

Roseneath Crème de la Celt

Roseneath Crème de la Celt, a part-bred gelding, is by Celtic Basil out of Whisper, a Welsh pony mare. He is rising 8 y.o.

With some sponsorship from Cheryl Heynemann, owner of Celtic Basil, Roseneath Crème de la Celt was purpose bred as a performance pony by John and Nicole Bromfi eld (‘Roseneath’, Wagga Wagga). He was born at ‘Benhoden’, Gollan, near ‘Nelsh’, part of the Wellington, the sheep property owned by Nicole’s parents, Chris family, assisted John and Jenny Whitt aker. He spent his early years maturing there, when he proposed to Nicole at the end of handled by the Whittakers. the REA Wagga He was broken as a 5 y.o. by Event and Dressage rider, Natalie Wagga Dressage Blundell. He also shows ability for jumping appreciated by Nicole and the spectators! with a very clean and scopey technique. Roseneath Crème de la Celt is currently competing Dressage at Elementary level and is training Medium and Advanced movements.

He did not share the champagne, but is now the ‘proposal pony’!

In February and March 2018 Nelsh began his serious career as a Pony Dressage competitor at the REA Dressage Club competition and at Aonach. In spite of competing in only two events, his successes were such that he was Runner-Up in the Most Successful Part-Bred at Photograph: Aonach. Di Watt From August onwards he entered Offi cial competitions in the Albury and Wagga arenas with wins and placings in large classes and with scores ranging from 64% to 72%. 2019 was the best year so far for Roseneath Crème de la Celt, the rising star of Pony Dressage! He was Champion Preliminary Pony and Reserve Champion Novice Pony at Young Championships, Elementary and Above Pony Champion at the Riverina Dressage Festival, made a very successful trip to Canberra and followed it with Novice and Elementary Pony Champion at the Jindera Equestrian Championships at Albury, all topped off with becoming Australian Novice Pony Champion at the national championships at SIEC.

In his brief career, he has proven himself a consistent performer, rarely outside the top 3 in any test, competing against both open horses and ponies. His most notable performance was at the 2019 Australian Dressage Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. He won both the Novice Pony classes, and became the 2019 Australian Novice Pony Dressage Champion. He was also a member of the winning Dressage Pony State Team.

Nicole and John continue to train Roseneath Crème de la Celt towards the higher levels of competitive Dressage with the aspirations of bringing him out at Grand Prix. Known at home as ‘Nelshie’ (short for ‘Conelsh’ which refl ects his breeding), Roseneath Crème de la Celt is an eye-catching performer who is always impeccably presented. He brings credit not only to the Roseneath team, but to his sire, Celtic Basil, and to the Connemara breed at large.

Roseneath Crème de la Celt’s performances are listed below. Equestrian Australia Official Performances Unofficial Performances GREENACRES FIRST LADY – PARTBRED MARE BY CASTLE BARON

From her first outing to the Qld All Welsh Show Greenacres First Lady (Lady) was a star. Taking it all in her stride she won her class and was Reserve Champion Partbred Yearling

She won at her first Ag show, and was Preliminary Pony Champion at her first official dressage competition

At the Qld All Welsh 2013 she was Reserve Champion Novice Dressage Pony, Champion Sporting Pony (5 wins and 2 second placings) back in to the ring to win best educated without a change of gear, and won her working hunter, indoors at night next to the fancy dress class her first time jumping away from home as well as 7 other wins and placings in led and ridden classes.

She was 5yo and 6yo Qld Champion Young Dressage Pony

At her first Advanced start she was 2015 Qld State Advanced Dressage Champion

She is undefeated in working hunter, successful in eventing and showjumping, has never refused a jump and could certainly been a superstar had we specialised in that area.

In 2017 she stepped in at the highest level of Western dressage and was immediately successful including top 3 at the State Western Dressage Championships.

She was immediately successful in Western Performance and even won a reining class at her first attempt.

However, once we discovered Working her true all-round talent was evident for all to see.

Working Equitation consists of 4 phases, working dressage, obstacles (trail judged on style), speed (trail) and cattle (similar to team penning)

To date she remains undefeated in working equitation. In 2018 at our first working Equitation competition she was Consegrados 2 level National Champion (Only 1 horse competed at a higher level at those championships) achieving a perfect 10 for her sidepass pole movement.

In 2019 at our 4th ever competition she competed two levels higher and is one of only two horses to have ever competed at Masters level in Australia and the other horse was the demonstration rider for Pedro Torres at Equitana. She won National Champion Masters level and Masters level horse of the year and is the only horse ever to win back to back National Championships in Australia.

This included jumping a 90cm jumping indoors one handed carrying a drizabone. The dressage test includes piaffe and passage and sequence flying changes ridden one handed. The level in Australia is the same difficulty as in Portugal the acknowledged home of working equitation, and exceeds the difficulty of the world championships.

I was told by International trainer Arne Koets, there is only one thing wrong with a horse like this, nothing else ever measures up. I’m hoping one of my younger horses will measure up but if not I’m privileged regardless.

Outside of the competition arena Lady is brave and clever and is at home working cattle in steep rocky country, as she is sorting in the yards, leading the breakers to build their confidence, she will block and hold cattle when I dismount if I’m on my own and have to open a gate. And of course she goes in harness if I need her to.
