FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: AUSTRALIAN BLUES/ROCK GUITARIST, HAMISH ANDERSON, ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE, “BREAKING DOWN” WITH PREMIERE ON ALL THINGS GO -------------- Australia-born, blues-rock artist Hamish Anderson premiered his new track, "Breaking Down" on All Things Go, who declared, “From soulful strums of a thick bass to near-rockabilly breakdowns, the young artist clearly knows the path from nostalgia to the future.” Anderson is currently on an East coast tour with The Main Squeeze and will be performing on November 17 with Doyle Bramhall II at Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles. “Breaking Down” dials up straight ahead, high energy rock and roll reminiscent of early Kings of Leon -with the swagger of 60s bands like The Kinks and The Who. Produced by 7x Grammy winner Jim Scott (whose credits include Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Petty), this new single is an unabashed rocker from start to finish, with a driving bass line and a breakneck drum beat backing up his rhythmic guitar styling The second single from Anderson’s upcoming album due out in 2019, "Breaking Down" follows up the single/video “No Good.” The video premiered on Billboard, who deems Anderson a “singer, songwriter and guitar hero.” That track, which debuted on Relix Magazine, was selected for Spotify’s Official ‘Nu Blues’ playlist. BRAGGS Quelle est votre vision de la pop culture noire américaine d’aujourd’hui ? Elle me semble très riche. Lorsqu’on voit le féminisme afrmé de Beyoncé ou Nick Minaj, on constate l’héritage de Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison ou Sonia Sanchez. Les musiciens pop et les réseaux sociaux citent régulièrement James Baldwin, décédé depuis près de trente ans. Au-delà de ces mentions, la pop culture revisite le passé, notamment via des documentaires retraçant le parcours d’icônes, de Nina Simone à Michael Jordan, ou en mettant en lumière des sujets cruciaux comme le manque de visibilité des acteurs noirs. Mais ce qui me frappe le plus, c’est l’attention désormais portée à la subjectivité noire qui, si elle a toujours été présente, a rarement été aussi populaire. Le cinéma ne se contente plus de récits historiques sur l’esclavage ou la ségrégation, à l’instar d’Amistad et Django Unchained. Ce sont des récits importants à raconter, mais qui rappellent également les stéréotypes, l’injustice, l’iniquité. Mes étudiants se demandent pourquoi il y a peu de flms sur les joies du quotidien des Noirs, ENTRETIEN AVEC pourquoi celui-ci semble lié à la soufrance, à l’oppression et à la violence. Thorup 1 The Faulkner Phenomenon: James Franco’s Revival of the Southern Gothic in Twenty-First Century Hollywood One of the many arguments made regarding adaptation is that the film can never do the original text justice due to the highly integral structure imparted by the literary author. It is par- ticularly difficult to translate a piece from a prior century in the modern era. One contemporary filmmaker who has persistently risen to this challenge is James Franco, who has become a sort of “boy wonder” in Hollywood, fulfilling roles of actor, writer, director, and producer. In 2013 and 2014 he directed and starred in adaptations of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying (1930) and The Sound and the Fury (1929), respectively. Prior to Franco’s films, Martin Ritt directed a 1959 “deconstructive adaptation” of The Sound of the Fury, which has been criticized for simply being plot-focused, producing a “‘ludicrous’ melodramatic version” that disregards the stylistics of Modernism (Metz 21). Faulkner’s literary techniques of multiple stream-of-consciousness narra- tives and temporal disjunction in character and setting pose challenges for traditional cinematic form. Yoknapatawpha County creates the ideal cinematic landscape for character and acting such as in Benjy’s movement—or rather, the translation of linguistic confinement in physical space. Franco’s revitalization of the Southern Gothic in The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying demonstrates a preoccupation with the alienated self and the juxtaposition of tradition and mo- dernity that is prevalent in twenty-first century America. While his adaptations and performances take aesthetic risks and (mostly) transcend the qualities of literary Modernism through Postmod- ern cinematic techniques, they still appeal to box office consumerism. -
