2018-19 Team Preview Greensboro Day School remains the powerhouse in the NCISAA and on the national level. Coming off back to back state championships (and 3 of the last 4 years), this Bengals’ team will look to make history by becoming the first GDS basketball team to win 3 consecutive state championships. The Bengals graduated 6 players (5 playing in college in 18-19) from the 17- 18 team, but still return experience with 5 players who played significant minutes in 17-18 and the influx of 3 new players with an abundance of talent! Sophomores Carson McCorkle ’21, Cam Hayes ’21, and Josh Taylor ’21 are all nationally ranked players.

5 returning seniors will play pivotal roles for the Bengals during the 18-19 year: Austin Inge, Noah Dunn, Mike Fowler, Nicholas Evtimov, and Banks Handy, *Player Rankings as of September 2018

6-1 Guard, Austin Inge ’19, is a tenacious defender. He is the leader of this team and he has continued to improve year after year. Austin will be pivotal in leading this team to 3-peat. 6-5 Wing, Noah Dunn ’19, may not be the flashiest guy on the court, but simply goes about his work. He is also hearing from Tennessee State University. Noah will miss the first part of the season as he continues to recover from a torn ACL in May of 2018. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.3ppg, 5.3rbg and shot 59%. He was selected to the All-Iredell County First Team and was All-SPAA Conference for the 2nd straight year. Christian played for Team United on the EYBL. Christian is ranked the #58 player in the NC Class of ’20 by Phenom Hoops.

Greensboro Day School is once again playing a tough schedule with scheduled games that include arch-rival Wesleyan Christian, Cox Mill, Carmel Christian, Providence Day, and Christ School. They start the season at the Phenom National High School Showcase. Two games that everyone should have marked on their calendars are December 22nd vs. Cox Mill and January 10th vs. Carmel Christian. After Christmas, the team will go for their 8th consecutive HAECO Invitational Championship in Greensboro, NC. This team looks to 3-peat as state champions. Another trip to the GEICO National Tournament would be the ideal finish to the season.

'Tradition' and ‘culture’ are two words often associated with Greensboro Day School basketball. Each year, GDS graduates players who go to compete at the next level. Over 60 players have gone on to play at the collegiate level including 22 of 30 (73%) graduates since 2013. 5 of 6 graduates from 2018 are playing during the 2018-19 season. In total, there are 15 alumni on college or professional rosters for the 2018-19 season. They have won the PACIS conference 25 times and have made the NCISAA state championship games 18 times, wining it a record 10 times in the short 48-year history of the school.

Coach Freddy Johnson is entering his 42nd season as Head Coach of the Varsity Boys' Basketball team at Greensboro Day School. Coach Johnson has amassed 1,019 wins in his career at GDS and has won a record 10 NCISAA state championships in 18 appearances. In May 2016, Coach Johnson was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Johnson was named the 2017 National Coach of the Year by BallisLife.

Expect the Greensboro Day School Bengals to stay at the top of the state and national rankings throughout the 18-19 year. Experience and leadership will keep this year’s team on par with past seasons of success!

Coaching Staff Freddy Johnson Head Coach & Athletic Director Twitter: @CoachJ1977 Birthday: May 26, 1954 Hometown: Greensboro, NC High School: Grimsley High School ’72 College: Greensboro College ’77 Graduate: NC A&T State University ’84 Spouse Name: Mary Marr Dillard Johnson Children Names: Robert Johnson, Katherine Johnson Willingham

Coaching Experience: Greensboro Day School: Head Varsity Coach: 1977-present Assistant Varsity Coach: 1976-77

Playing Experience: Greensboro College: 1972-74

Personal Bio: Freddy Johnson, a Greensboro native, has spent his entire coaching career at Greensboro Day School. Graduating from Grimsley High School in 1972 and Greensboro College in 1977, he furthered his education with a Master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University in 1984. Johnson played basketball on the collegiate level for two years at Greensboro College, where he realized he wanted to coach basketball, gaining valuable experience for his life’s work coaching YMCA basketball teams.

Just out of Greensboro College, Johnson began volunteering with the Greensboro Day School basketball squad, and he was soon appointed Head Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at the relatively young independent school. One year later, he also became the Athletic Director. During his 41 years at GDS, the athletic program has grown to include over forty teams and 85% middle and upper school student participation. There have also been 154 conference and 40 state championship teams during his tenure.

At GDS, Johnson has compiled an overall record of 1019-290 (prior to the start of the 18-19 year), a winning percentage of 77.85%, and is the winningest coach in North Carolina high school basketball history. He has coached teams to a record 10 state championships in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) and was a finalist 8 other times. His teams have won 25 conference championships and Johnson has been the Conference Coach of the Year 22 times. He has led the Bengals to a record 16 tournament championships at the HAECO Invitational, a premier tournament showcasing local high school teams in Guilford County, NC. He was the USA Today North Carolina Coach of the Year in 2015. He was named the 2017 National Coach of the Year by BallisLife. He has led 2 Bengal teams to the GEICO (formerly known as the Dick’s Sporting Goods) National High School Tournament (’15, ’17).

Johnson’s success at GDS has led to his selection as coach in seven all-star games, including the 2017 , the 2013 McDonald’s All-American Game in Chicago and the 1997 Capital Classic All-Star Game in Washington, DC.

He has been enshrined into the NC Gaters Hall of Fame (2006), Greensboro College Athletic Hall of Fame (2009) and Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame (2011), as well as being awarded the Charles N. Carter NCISAA Athletic Director Cup (2015) and the Greensboro College Alumni Excellence Award (2008) and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2016).

A former player recently wrote, “The impact that you (Freddy Johnson) have had on my life and many other young men looms large. I wanted to let you know that your influence affected the direction of my life -- in a very positive fashion. I think what I value most about our time together was that I was able to apply the principles that I learned from you in life itself, outside of athletics. I didn't realize it at the time, but the hard work and teamwork you instilled in me would be something I 10

would be able to use later in many life situations.” Coach Johnson transcends basketball; he teaches not only the game but also life skills. His success in molding young men’s lives for some four decades is the major building in Greensboro Day School’s basketball foundation.

Freddy Johnson and his wife, Mary Marr Dillard Johnson, have two children: Robert Johnson (McKinley) and Katherine Johnson Willingham (Davis); and two grandsons, Cross and Worth Johnson.
