Transpac 2011 17 One thing to know about Roy Disney is that he came to grand prix racing the slow way. First he sailed modest family cruisers, and he was drawn into sailing bit by bit. Then he discovered Transpac. It was the beginning of a love affair that enriched Roy’s life and the Transpacific YachtR ace as well. The man commissioned custom ocean racers and raced all over the world, with great success. But Transpac? He sailed fifteen Transpacs. He served on the Board of the Transpacific Yacht Club and was always about the business of making Transpac better. Transpac was his passion. He said, “I raised four kids on this race.” Shamrock was Roy’s first Transpac ride, in 1975, and he loved that boat, but Shamrock was an S&S centerboard yawl and wrong-wrong-wrong for racing downwind in the trades. Slip-sliding all the way to the Diamond Head Buoy proved the point. For the next race Roy chartered a Santa Cruz 50. Now, Photo by Leslie DeMeuse Disney, Artwork by Phil Uhl. instead of fighting the boat down the waves, the crew found themselves fighting each other for the delight of helming a boat that wanted to go straight and fast. Roy held onto his dear Shamrock—now she was declared a cruising boat—and Roy E. Disney along the way there would be four new race boats, each in turn named Pyewacket, after the cat in the Disney movie, In fond memory Bell, Book and Candle. 18 Transpac 2011 Pyewacket II, a Santa Cruz 70 with son Roy Pat skippering (Roy was nursing a broken leg) in 1997, became the boat that finally beat Merlin’s 20-year-old record, taking the mark down to seven days and change. Come 1999, Roy was back in the saddle and riding Pyewacket III, an R/P 75 that shaved the record by four more hours for a time of 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes. The same boat in 2002 went east and set records in the Newport-Bermuda and Chicago-Mackinac. An attempt in 2007 to reclaim the Transpac record with a cant-keeled, extended Pyewacket IV did not pan out, but this is becoming too much like a list of races and records. Those who knew Roy Edward Disney, inevitably referenced in the press as “nephew of Walt,” knew him as dead-set loyal to his crew, who were equally loyal to him. He was generous and gentle, but driven, with a fertile and creative mind. He made his nature movies and championed his animations, he made his Morning Light Transpac movie, and he cared deeply about the Disney heritage. During the heights/depths of his bitter battle to oust Michael Eisner from the helm of the company that Roy feared was losing its soul, he told the New York Times, “You want to know what really set me off? It was the word ‘brand.’ Michael Eisner kept talking about Mickey Mouse as a brand. He’s not a brand. He’s a mouse.”

Transpac 2011 19 Go toward the light Transpac and the ULDB By Kimball Livingston

In the story of Transpac and the ULDB, it is no coincidence that California lies upwind from Hawaii. However, there is no rational explanation of the Santa Cruz phenomenon and how, or why, a small town tucked into the sheltered bight of Monterey Bay should experience a boatbuilding spasm that rocks our world to this day.

But it did. Which is not to claim that every critical element bubbled up out of Santa Cruz. To get our story right, we must begin in Southern California, with a man who knew what he wanted in a boat, and it wasn’t anything already on offer. And we must touch base with a Chutzpah 1973 finish. Crew: L to R: Steve Fletcher, Bruce Nelson, Tom Nelson, man of the islands, who believed it was time for a Honolulu boat to Stuart Cowan, Jacob Van Heeckeren, Jim Gannon (crouched). win the Honolulu race, a man prepared to go out on a limb to make that happen. Santa Cruz; Goring’s 30-foot Starbuck had been built in South Africa. At We begin, long before the term Ultra Light Displacement Boat the same time there was about an inaugural “MORA Transpac” was coined, much less in need of the acronym, ULDB. We begin for boats 30 feet and under. The prospect inspired Santa Cruz surfer with George Griffith, Transpacific YachtC lub member #1 in 2011 and /sailor George Olson to build a boat with the goal to go insanely fast long before, in the 1960s, the godfather of the Cal 40. Bill Lapworth downwind. What would become Grendel was born of having, as Olson did the naval architecture, yes, but it was George Griffith who put it, “a lot of Cal 20 stuff lying around.” A bit of research on what sketched the midsection that defined the ride. It was Griffith who we might call a Model T computer convinced Olson that a Cal 20 rig insisted upon a fin keel, spade rudder layout and a structure that would work for a light 24-footer (think 2,000 pounds displacement) was radically-light for the day. It was Griffith who guaranteed the so a 24-footer is what he built. The MORA Transpac never happened, builder—purely a gamble—a series run of 10. Then, in their Transpac but Grendel was a happening in herself. The boat was launched in debut, 1965, Cal 40s ran 1-1 and 2-2 and four more Cal 40s placed 1968 and won a MORA season championship and a distance race in the overall top 10. In a race already rich with history, a new ethos that finished in Ensenada. Olson had got his numbers right. But the was born. Transpac celebrates downwind, tradewind sailing, and it Grendel story was just beginning, because Olson’s friend and fellow was no longer necessary, and certainly no longer cool, to wallow in this madness, Ron Moore, refused to let Grendel’s male mold downwind, stuck in the water. Sailors began to speak of “surfing” go to waste. With the beam stretched to suit the eyeball, the mold to Hawaii. It was a new day. produced a second one-off, Summertime, that became the prototype The Cal 40 had its critics in the old guard until, year by year, it of the Moore 24, something of a legend in itself. proved itself on both coasts as one very good boat. The castle keep And so the stage was set for a fellow named Bill Lee who, ahem, had been breached. You might call the Cal 40 a ULDB-of-its-day, actually had an engineering degree. Lee had arrived in Santa Cruz in but Griffith never endorsed the label. In this writing, your author 1968 and soon was at work on a 30-footer that became Magic. Rather contacted Griffith and a heap of other veterans as to the origin of than use solid glass, Lee chose a cored sandwich for his hulls, for the term, Ultra Light Displacement Boat, ULDB, and came away lighter displacement. Magic was launched in 1969. Next came the with lots of speculation but no answers. Certainly the term was in 36-foot Witchcraft for Art Biehl, who racked up a string of successes widespread use in the 1970s as a means to identify the new, light in downwind races to Mexico. And then came Stu Cowan, a man on boats that were coming, notably, out of Santa Cruz. Designer Alan a mission “to bring First Overall and the King David Kalakaua Cup Andrews pointed me to a page in Royce’s Sailing Illustrated crediting back to Honolulu.” Windward Passage (first to finish, 1969, 1970) as the first big ULDB, As Cowan relates it, a bit of research led to the discovery of with a D/L of 100, and quoting designer Bob Perry saying, “If you some glowing press accounts of that Witchcraft thingamajig, a have to draw the lines I would suggest zero to 110 for ULDBs, 110 product of Bill Lee and his then-partner, Biehl, in Magic Marine Boat to 160 for light displacement boats. The Cal 40, considered light Works. Along with Honolulu sailmaker Tommy Nelson, Cowan flew in the 1960s, had a 250 D/L ratio.” And here is a little fine-tuning to Witchcraft’s home port of Marina del Rey, California “to try her from Andrews: “In more modern boats, the sail-carrying power has out. Before we even got her out of the harbor, I decided this was increased tremendously, so they carry bigger rigs and actually plane the right design.” in many conditions as opposed to just surfing.” The right design to bring an overall Transpac win to Honolulu. As the Sixties wound down, MORA—the Midget Ocean Racing The result was a commission for Lee to design and build a 35-footer Association (RIP)—was a hotbed of activity on the Northern California that would become Chutzpah IV. Launched in April, 1973, Cowan’s coast. Bill Lee credits Don Goring with having the first ultra light in new boat weighed in at 7,000 pounds compared to his previous

The rating hit to the race that year, Cowan recruited Jake van Heeckeren, a Northern Chutzpah was roughly four hours, but then, there was that four-day California sailmaker who had navigated a 1969 Transpac win on the stretch during the race when her mileage was only seven miles short Cal 40, Holiday II, plus Nelson and three more people who qualified of the mileage of Ondine, at 79 feet more than twice her length. Can as among the best helmsmen going. you race light boats against heavy boats? Chutzpah would repeat Chutzpah was the smallest and, by a country mile, the cheapest as Class D and overall time allowance winner, finishing on elapsed of 58 boats entered in the 1973 race, including 15 in Class D. While time ahead of all the Class D boats, all the Class C boats, seven B’s van Heeckeren (a Ph.D in mathematics) worked with Bill Lee to design and one A. Winning for Honolulu, a second time. Bill Lee designs the rig and sail plan to the IOR-magic number of 27.5018, Cowan took seven of 19 trophies, and a consensus began to develop that cheerfully told anyone who would listen that his boat was going to apples versus oranges was a problem deserving a solution. win the ‘73 Transpac. But how to handicap it? line honors was all about Merlin and Drifter. Add another four days, As George Griffith recalled many years later, “For several races we and the duel was incredibly tight, with Bill Lee and Harry Moloshco went through the tortures of the damned. Can you race light boats both checking-in to the finish line committee on the evening of day versus heavy boats and make it mean something? It was a period eight. With lots of wind in the Molokai Channel. With Merlin closing of frustration. Everybody had an axe to grind.” at the more favorable angle of sail. With tension mounting. Meanwhile, Bill Lee declared “Fast is fun” and continued to ignore Hallelujah, they were arriving at party time. the IOR rule in favor of the type of boat that he liked. Transpac YC Merlin came first across the Diamond Head finish line just past 9 committees, in their turn, increased the ratings of the very light boats, o’clock in a time of 8:11:1:45. Drifter arrived only 17 minutes later— credited some of the heavier boats, and hoped for the best in ‘75. the crew not knowing whether they were first or not—followed by By way of adjustment, the ratings committee lopped 8:46:52 Ragtime in the early next morning, in the wake of celebrations that off Ragtime’s allowance for the 1975 race. Ragtime then placed 7th ran most of the night. Lee remembers ‘77 as, “A battle between in Class A, 52nd overall while winning her second-in-a-row first-to- the old and the new. The heavy boats with big rigs versus the light

Transpac 2011 21 boats with little rigs. All in the days of amateur crews, real food, Dacron sails, and celestial navigation.” Between Chutzpah’s double wins in ‘73 and ‘75, and Merlin’s Barn Door win in ‘77 that shaved 22 hours off the existing record, ULDBs had come to Transpac to stay. Over the years to come, the emerging new-generation Transpac fleets edged closer to the ULDB range, and by and by the whole sport moved. Soon Transpac entered the era of the Sleds, production boats from Lee in the form of Santa Cruz 50s and Santa Cruz 70s, custom boats from the likes of Reichel-Pugh and Alan Andrews that reached speeds in the twenties, under control. They became the new standard even before carbon fiber came along to make the high-end boats lighter yet. The Transpac course record now belongs to Neville Crichton’s all-carbon cant-keeled 100 footer from New Zealand, Alfa Romeo, which sailed the 2009 race with a rating of -32.997 and finished with an elapsed time of 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes, and 20 seconds—but no Barn Door. Instead, the Barn Door was reserved for fixed-keel boats, and fourth-generation Transpac sailor Trisha Steele donated the Merlin Trophy for boats in an “Unlimited” division. The inaugural Merlin Trophy went to Alfa Romeo. Think of this as an early-21st century quandary of apples versus oranges. Not since 1977 has there been a fleet split by a standard of displacement. Meanwhile, in 2011, an “average” boat looks more like Double Trouble, an off-the-shelf J/125 with a displacement/length ratio of 74, and the Transpacific Yacht Club goes out of its way to drum up interest from “traditional, heavy cruising-type yachts” to encourage them to sign up for the Aloha Class and come on along. Transpac 2011 27 A brief history of MIR First and only Transpac yacht to Finish stern-FIrst By Curtis A. “Bud” Thompson

Mir heads to Kewalo Basin under jury rig.

Forty-two years ago, in the 1969 Transpacific YachtR ace, the 79- Mir found admirers wherever she sailed. One of them was John foot ketch Mir, flying the burgee of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Scripps who had sailed his 89-foot ketch Novia del Mar in several fdismasted near the Diamond Head finish line. Transpac and Tahiti races but lost her in a fire off the coast of Mexico. Members of the press and photographers aboard a nearby It wasn’t long before he started looking for another boat and heard Mir powerboat witnessed several knockdowns as the gusting trade winds was for sale. He had raced against her a number of times and in 1973 overpowered her. A short distance from the finish line another heavier became her new proud owner. John’s son Paul and family now enjoy gust came down out of the mountain valleys laying Mir almost flat in sailing her out of the San Diego Yacht Club. Mir, in Russian, means the water and the spinnaker collapsed. The helmsman steered her off “Highest point of perfection,” and she is now named Miramar, which the wind and when the sails filled the rig collapsed! The plucky crew in Spanish means, ”Seeing or enjoying the sea. Such a wonderful quickly cut away the rigging and mast and sailed her over the finish way to treat a lady! line stern first with a spinnaker flying from the mizzenmast. It was like a shot heard around the world when the pictures and story hit the press. FotoBoat photographer Richard Cleveland took a sequence of shots in color, as did Lois Kennedy of SEA Magazine in black and white. To this day the shots of the Mir dismasting are found in many homes and yacht clubs. Her resourceful owner, George O’Brian, after finding that getting a new mast would take months, had a telephone pole stepped in the vessel for the sail back to the coast. Over time, Mir has enjoyed quite a life. Designed by Jarl Lindblom, her keel was laid at the ABO Batfarv yard in Abo, Finland in 1943, launched in 1949, and finished at the Plym yard in Stockholm Sweden in 1950. Her first owner Wilhelm Hedensjo sold her in 1953 to Harry Greb and she found herself being sailed from Sweden across to Canada where she enjoyed sailing out of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club on the Great Lakes. Illness caused Harry Greb to sell her and she was sailed to Puerto Rico where she lay idle and in need of attention. Mir later found her way back to Toronto and was sold to George O’Brian who sailed her out of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in the Swiftsure races and to Mexico and finally to Hawaii in the 1969 Transpac.

Mir using only her mizzen sail crosses the Transpac finish line stern first.

We used HAM radio in those days to talk with the fleet and the escort vessel, and a landline phone to reach the press. Our “Press Room” was on his boat, near Transpac Row. Usually he’d head up to the Hawaii Yacht Club for a “quick one” around 2:00 p.m. and often not return, leaving me to receive messages via HAM and pass out press releases on the phone. On the afternoon of Mir’s scheduled arrival, Ernie had already departed for the club. Suddenly, from the ship-to-shore radio came a voice that said, “Ernie, this is hot news. Listen to this...” and the voice proceeded to tell me the yacht Mir had had a bad knockdown and with just a few hundred yards to go The mainmast come down. to the finish line, had broken its mast, and the crew had rigged the mizzen and was coming across the line backward. This report was from a helicopter flying above the finish line and the speaker was Bud Thompson. With no knowledge about radio protocol, I simply - without call letters - thanked the helicopter and turned to the HAM set to tell the Escort Vessel and TP Officials. Again, without any call letters, I repeated what I had heard. “Get that lady off the horn” someone shouted. I explained who I was, but they still insisted I was crazy and had my facts wrong. So I called the helicopter back (again, no call letters; just “Bobbie to helicopter”) and asked them to repeat what they had said. Again they repeated the same story. So back I went to the HAM set and passed along the information once again, and once again was told to put Ernie Mir cleans up the carnage. on the horn with some reasonable explanation. I replied that Ernie was “indisposed” and I was in charge, but after a few more back-and-forth conversations I said to heck with them and began preparing a press release for the media. The Transpac officials finally learned I was correct in my reporting, and thanks to a photographer from California, the photo of Mir taking the knockdown was captured for magazine covers, as well as the huge framed enlargement on the wall of the Waikiki Yacht Club. Ernie, incidentally, received over a dozen “unlicensed-user citations” from the FCC! (End Note: Ernie passed away later that year and I became the media-dubbed “Voice of Transpac”. I haven’t missed broadcasting a Transpac on local radio in 40 years.)

The arrival party was not dampened by the loss of the rig. Photos from Kennedy Family collection. Transpac 2011 29 TRANSPACIFIC YACHT CLUB COMMITTEES
