COHIBA

Cuba’s premier brand was originally produced for President Castro and as diplomatic gifts for visiting dignitaries. Nowadays they are known for their superb quality and are available in four ranges: Linea Clasica, Linea 1492, Maduro 5 and the ultimate Linea Behike. Cohiba cigars are medium to full- bodied depending on range and size.

MONTECRISTO

By far the biggest selling brand of Habano, was founded in 1935 and named after Alexander Dumas’ famous book. The name was chosen by the rollers after hearing it read to them by the ‘Lector’ or ‘reader’, a tradition that is still maintained to this day. Montecristo cigars are medium to full- bodied depending on size.

HOYO DE MONTERREY

Instigated in 1860, is one of the great Cuban brands producing cigars of the highest quality. The word ‘hoyo’ literally means a dip or low-lying area of land which is particularly suited to growing very high quality . Hoyo de Monterrey makes cigars that are light to medium in flavour.

PARTAGAS

Partagas was founded in 1845 and the original building at 520 Industria still produces cigars of the best quality to this very day. One is able to visit the factory and see first-hand just how these wonderful smokes are constructed. Partagas cigars are all full-bodied in flavour.

TRINIDAD

Like Cohiba, Trinidads were not originally for general sale but in 1998 they were launched to the market, originally in one size only. In 2003 four new sizes were added and then a fifth in 2009. These cigars, now made in Pinar del Rio, a city in the heart of the finest tobacco growing region, are of medium flavour.

CUABA

Most Cuabas are made in the ‘old-style’ double-figurado or ‘torpedo’ shape that was so popular during the late 1800’s but this brand has been in existence only since 1996 and are constructed totally by hand at the factory. They are of medium-to-full flavour.

ROMEO Y JULIETA

The most romantic of all the brands, Romeo y Julieta has been in existence since 1875. One of Sir Churchill’s favourite cigars, his name was given to the brands’ most well-known size after a visit to in 1946. Romeo y Julieta cigars are medium in flavour.

RAMON ALLONES

One of the oldest brands still making cigars, being founded in 1837, Ramon Allones was the first factory to use boxes that were decorated with colourful labelling; giving rise to the wonderfully designed boxes we are familiar with to this day. The cigars are of a full flavour.

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA HABANA

Launched in 1999, the original four sizes are named after the fortresses protecting the entrance to ’s harbour. In 2004 an additional three sizes were introduced and these are named after well-known thoroughfares in Old Havana. They are of light-to-medium flavour.

JUAN LOPEZ

In 1876, Juan López Sena (aka Juan López Diaz) created the Juan López brand. Producing cigars in Havana on Calle de los Dragones. In , the Cuban revolutionary government nationalized the Cuban cigar industry and seized the factory where Juan López cigars were manufactured. Production was resumed, and today all Juan López cigars are made by hand (totalmente a mano) at the La Habana factory in Havana.

BOLIVAR

The fullest flavoured of the Habanos, Bolivar is named after the Venezuelan military and political leader who liberated much of South America from Spanish colonial rule. His full name is Simón José Antonio de la Santísima y Palacios Ponte y Blanco!

H.UPMANN

A very well-known brand of light-to-medium flavour cigars that was started by a German banker in 1844, Upmanns include the famed Sir Winston and Magnum 50 amongst its range of sizes.

PUNCH

Punch cigars are one of the older brands from Cuba, having been around since 1840. The brand was originally owned by a German who made them especially for the British market. They are named after the famous comedy puppet character, Mr. Punch from Punch and Judy and a picture of him takes pride of place on the inside of each box of cigars.

POR LARRAÑAGA

Begun in 1834 by Ignacio Larrañaga, the factory was the first in Cuba to use machines for some of their production. This resulted in a boycott by the workers, none too pleased about the threat to their livelihood! Nowadays they have a small range of high-quality hand-made cigars and are known for their easy- properties.

DUNHILL CUBA

This most English of brands of cigar has become almost legendary to the cigar connoisseur. It has a complex history of importing various brands in exclusive sizes, as well as its own lines such as Don Alfredo, Don Candido and Flor Del Punto. They ceased production in 1991 and have become the most sought after brand of cigars.

DAVIDOFF CUBA

Rather like the Cuban cigars, also ceased production in Cuba in the early 1990’s. Their cigars have again, like Dunhills become hugely sought-after and as such command a premium price.
