Descendants of Daniel Byrnes

Generation No. 1

1. DANIEL1 BYRNES was born Abt. 1695 in County Wicklow, IRELAND, and died 1787 in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., DE (Source: History od DE, 1609-1888 by J. Thomas Schare, p 882.). He married R EBECCA FITCH Abt. 1717 in IRELAND, County Wicklow, daughter of JAMES FITCH and /?/. She was born Abt. 1698 in SCOTLAND, and died Unknown in New Castle Co., DE.

Notes for DANIEL BYRNES: Daniel Byrnes Sr. was born inCounty Wicklow, IRELAND in about 1695. In his youth he became a member of the Quaker Friends. It is believed that his family was most of the Roman Catholic faith, and that this caused some descention amongst his family. He first met a Quaker lady and wanted to marry her but was persuaded not to, as she was a great deal older than he. He soon after met Rebecca Fitch, who had come from Scotland to County Wicklow in Ireland and was also of the Quaker Friends persuasion. They married in Wicklow and had four children when they, Rebecca's sister and her husband, a Mr. Robinson, came from Ireland in 1730 to Philadelphia. Although we are not certain of Daniel Byrnes Sr.'s vocation, it is thought that they had money in Ireland, and that he was a glove maker. It is known that his two of his sons were millers, and were craftsmen. Joshua was a sea captain, ferry and inn owner; Daniel Jr. was a miller, a builder, a store owner and an inventor as well as a Quaker Minister; Caleb was a miller, and a furniture craftsman whose work is now displayed in the Wilmington Historical Society Museum. The Byrne family may have come to Kent Co., DE before 1730 then to Wilmington, DE. Their son, Daniel, our 4-great grandfather, may have been born in Kent CO., DE. Their youngest son, Caleb, was born in New Castle County, Delaware and married in Plymouth Meeting . Daniel Byrnes Sr. and Rebecca Fitch lived in Philacelphia at the SW Corner of 2nd and Spruce Street. They moved to Jones Creek, DE October 13, 1764 according to Quaker Records. It is thought that Daniel and Rebecca are buried in the Christiana Head Meeting Cemetery at Stanton. Daniel Byrnes of 1842, son of Caleb, and grandson of Daniel Byrnes, the immigrator continues his saga: "Both (Byrnes and Robinson) families removed to America pretty much on account of their connections being Catholic. (And they were Quaker.) This must have been about the year 1730. In tracing down Grandfather's descendants, I have commended with his children which I believed was the oldest, and so continued down that branch of his family, to the present time, 1842. Which each of his children: Daniel Byrnes and Caleb Byrnes, his two youngest were born in America, the others in Ireland. Daniel and Rebecca's first residence in America was in the City of Philadelphia, in a brick house, at Southwest corner of Front and Spruce Sts. in 1730. What his occupation was, we do not know. A letter from Daniel Sr. to his son Daniel Byrnes, Jr. is as follows: 'Jones Creek ye 10 mo. 13th , 1764. My dear Daniel: I was much surprised when I heard of what the child (suffered) I suppose poor Dinah was in a crewel fright do pray send me word by ye first opportunity and likewise how you is and whether Rachel ever moved up the County blessed be the Lord, we are all in good health here hoping that you are in the same, this is all at present but my love to ye both. Remember me Nicholas and Molly of ye...... I remain your loving Father until Death, Dan'l Byrnes" Daniel Byrnes of 1842 goes on to explain: "The letter "s" at the end of our name must have been added by his children, as he did not put an "s" to his name in the above letter." "Now I have understood that the cause of Aunt Dinah's fright (to which he alludes in his letter) was that one of the children had got a gold ring in its throat. How long Grandfather lived at Jones' Creek in the state of DE we have no "clew"; it is likely he ended his days there. (This is at Christiania Head in New Castle County.)." Daniel and Rebecca and their family were a close knit and loving group. There are records of this throughout the Quaker Meeting notes. This immigrator brought many talents to Colonial America.

Notes for REBECCA FITCH: Rebecca's father, James Fitch, lived in Scotland, of wealthy parents who disowned him when he became a member of The Friends (Quaker) religion. James had 2 daughters, Rebecca, who married Daniel Byrnes, of a

1 Catholic family, and the second dauaghter married a Mr. Robinson, a Quaker. Both daughters remained steadfast as Quakers. Rebecca and Daniel married in Ireland, had 4 children born there then immigrated to America . Their sons, Daniel and Caleb, were born after they came to America. They first came to Philadelphia, then to the Wilmington area. Caleb, the youngest was born in Wilmington, and Daniel is thought to have been born in Kent Co., DE. Rebecca was a devout Quaker and reared all of her children in the Quaker religion.

In 1717 he married Rebecca Fitch, who was born in Scotland. Her parents had come to Ireland after her father had converted to the Quaker religion and was kicked out of the Fitch family because of it. Her sister had married a Robinson. Both the Byrne(s) and Robinson family immigrated to America in the Philadelphia area about 1730. This source states that Daniel was born in MD; however, all indications that this was DE as his parents were in the New Castle area after having left Philadelphia, PA), and died May 27, 1797 in New Windsor, NY, buried at Cornwall on Hudson Friends (Source: Will of Daniel Byrnes, Ulster Co., NY.). He married DINAH HICHEN June 8, 1751 in Newark MM (Source: Delaware Quaker Records, p. 49.). She was born Bef. 1735, and died Aft. 1797 in Perhaps Cornwall, Orange Co or Fishkill NY, Dutchess Co. NY.

Notes for DANIEL BYRNES:

3 Daniel Byrnes, Jr. was born late in 1730 in Kent County, DE to Irish immigrators, Daniel and Rebecca Fitch Byrne. His parents had arrived first in Philadelphia with four children earlier about 1729/30 then moved to Jones Creek, DE. Shortly afterwards Daniel, Jr. was born, and two years later his younger brother, Caleb was born there. Daniel Jr.'s mother was a devout Quaker and reared her children in the faith. The next information that we have on Daniel is his being approved June 8, 1751at Newark MM to marry Dinah Hichen. They were certified May 2, 1752 from Newark MM to Kennett. He apparently lived near there until he moved into Wilmington. They were certified from Cecil MM to Wilmington February 11, 1759. Their son, William was born in 1759, followed by Joshua in 1762, Lydia in 1767, Joseph in 1769, and Caleb in 1771. Daniel purchased a home from Mr. Finley, which had been built by Mr. Hale about 1750, in 1773. He expanded this home on White Clay Creek (later called Stanton). He ran a mill there. Daniel was most talented and used his mill not only for grain, but made twine, used water power to pack barrels, etc. His younger brother, Caleb ran a mill nearby on Red Clay Creek. Their children often played together. Daniel's house, now known as the Byrnes-Hale House played a vital part in the Revolutionary War, and Gen. Washington and his men planned the Battle of Brandywine here. The family stayed there but had planned to retreat to the basement if the British came. He practiced his Quaker ministry here as well. Daniel recommended as minister April 11, 1781 by Wilmington MM. He was certified to Philadelphia MM, S District October 18, 1784, received December 29, 1784. While in Philadelphia he ran a flour store and invented a navigation device. He was certified from Philadelphia MM to New Cornwall MM NY on June 21, 1791. He sold his home in White Clay Creek and moved to State to New Windsor, where he opened several mills along the Hudson River in the early 1790s. Joshua and Caleb came with him and Dinah to New York. William followed the next year and opened mills across the Hudson at Fishkill. He died in May 1797 and left some of his mills to his son Caleb and to his wife, Dinah. WIlliam and Caleb were executors of his will. Joshua, Joseph and Lydia Byrnes Poultney from Philadelphia were mentioned. Wtn: William Seymour (merch), John Dickinson, William Gregg CODICIL BkC:17 "son Caleb to have my flour, wheat & product thereof in NYC or my mills & store hs in Twn New Windsor except my mills at Great Pond Twn Newburg" 27 May 1797 Exec: William Seymour, William Gregg Wtn: William Gregg; Thomas Price

Daniel got clearance to Wilmington Monthly Meeting June 6, 1767 FTM online: from Delaware Quaker Records, Wilmington, p. 49. Approved 6-8-1751 Daniel Byrnes built a long??? on west side.... From a letter of Cornwall Monthly Meeting: their records date back to 1808. It was rare for Friends to use markers much before the mid-ninteenth century. Daniel Byrnes could be buried there in an unmarked grave. Monthly meeting notes prior to 1808 are now at Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA 19081. We checked Land Deed records for Orange Co. and found those for Joseph T. Byrnes, William's son and Daniel's grandson, and those for Joshua Byrnes, Daniel's son. Joseph T. Byrnes also inherited mills and property in Fishkill, Dutchess Co, NY. I sent for Daniel Byrnes will from Ulster Co. Surrogate Court, NY as his death was in that County in 1797. New Windsor and Cornwall became part of Orange county, NY in 1798. We now have the copy of Daniel Byrnes Will. Joseph and William were given help during Daniel's life and thus not mentioned in further gifts. Joshua was given land of 4000 acres in , so he may have had help earlier also. It would be interesting to find out more about Caleb, probably the younger son. Lydia, the daughter was probably given a dowry when she married. We are still searching the Philadelphia and Wilmington area for earlier data on this Byrnes family. One source has a Daniel Byrnes born in Kent Co., MD (I now believe that this is Kent County, DE on Jones Creek); Certified from Cecil MM to Wilmington February 11, 1759; Newark MM approved June 8, 1751 Dinah Hichen Certified from Cecil MM to Wilmington February 11, 1759. Certified of May 2, 1752 from Newark MM to Kennett when they had one child, William, born July 22, 1759. Daniel was granted ??? to visit meetings of Friends within compass of Duck Creek MM January 15, 1783. Daniel built a long ???(race for the mill) on the west side of Brandywine in Brandywine village. He bought the Boyce House (this is the Hale-Byrnes House: Boyce purchased it later after Daniel had sold it to others) near Stanton in 1773 and sold it in 1790, when he went to NY. See "Boyce House the Byrnes House in 1777" by W. Emerson Wilson in Evening Journal, September 3, 1965. Daniel and Dinah had purchased a house from Mr. Finley. This was the original Hale House mentioned above. Several people owned the house after Daniel. The Boyce family had it from about 1905 until it was given to the DAR and Historical Society in 1961. The "Hale-Byrnes" house, located off of Exit 4, Christiana-Stanton Road, DE between Newark and Wilmington and is on the Historical Register. It was the place that Generals George Washington, Laffayette, Greene, Johnston and others planned the "Battle of Brandywine" in September,

4 1777. Daniel's children: William, Joshua, Lydia, Joseph and Caleb all served the Generals water from the Springhouse for this meeting. (William and Joshua were old enough by this time to have been working in the mill that Daniel had constructed and ran next door.)

Notes for DINAH HICHEN: We assume that Dinah Hichen was born prior to 1735, perhaps in the Kent Co. DE or New Castle County, DE area, if she did not immigrate to America as a young person. She married Daniel Byrnes about 1751. They had 6 children: William, Rebecca (who died young), Joshua, Caleb, Lydia and Joseph. She died after her husband Daniel who died in May 30, 1797 in New Windsor, NY, for she is mentioned in his will. New Windsor was in Ulster Co., NY until 1798; then it was part of Orange County, NY. It is interesting that we do not find a will for Dinah. Perhaps wives were not required to make wills at this period of time. Early records of the Daniel and Dinah Byrnes family are being sought in Wilmington, DE and Philadelphia, PA.

Notes for JOSHUA BYRNES: Joseph mentions Joshua in his 1830 letter. More research is needed on this Byrnes member. Land deed for Joshua was found in Orange Co., NY. I have yet to find out more about the 4000 acres in VA that was left to Joshua by his father, Daniel. Joshua was born July 3, 1762, died unmarried. He was certified to Cornwall MM, NY September 15, 1790. Joshua had a fall from a horse and suffered brain damage as a youngster. He spent his later days in NYC being taken care of by a nephew or the nephew's estate.

5. CALEB2 BYRNES (DANIEL1) was born 1732 in New Castle Co., DE, and died January 11, 1794 in Stanton, New Castle Co., DE. He married MARY DAVIS May 17, 1759 in Plymouth MM, Near Philadelphia, PA. She was born 1734, and died January 1, 1794 in Stanton, New Castle Co., DE.

Notes for CALEB BYRNES: Caleb was the youngest son of Daniel and Rachel Byrnes, Sr. He was born in Kent Co., DE about 1732. He was an accomplished chairmaker and furniture maker. Some of his work is in the Delaware Historical Society Museum today. Was overseer of Mtg at White Clay Creck August 16, 1780. Caleb and family moved to Wilminton, DE 1771/2 then shortly afterwards moved to Red Clay Creek Mill at Stanton. Caleb purchased the mill with Samuel I. Smith and Stephen Stapler. According to Caleb's son Daniel they commenced digging a long mill race. This mill was just up the creek from his brother Daniel, Jr.'s mill. Their children often played together.

5 According to his son, Daniel: "I now come to Grandfather's youngest son, Caleb Byrnes, who was my father. Ibelieve that he was born in the year 1732 some two years after Grandfather's arrival in this country. He learned the chair-making business or carpenter's. I do not know which, and as no schooling, got but little and that was poor 100 years ago. He married my mother, Mary Davis, at Plymouth Meeting in the neighborhood of Philadelphia. They had six children: Susannah, November 22, 1760; Tacy, March 27, 1763; Martha, April 18, 1765; Jonathan, April 16, 1768; Rachel, March 4, 1771; and me, Daniel March 17, 1773. The four eldest were born at Plymouth, Rachel was born at Wilmington, and I was born at Stanton, so named after Daniel Stanton, and called by some "White Clay Creek." "Soon after Father and Mother settled at this place there came some very trying times. A few days previous to the Battle of Brandywine. General Washington with all his American army were camped on the rising ground before our door and round to White Clay Creek Bridge and further westward; the cannon were placed on this rise of ground as thick as they could stand. General Washington's headquarters was at William Marshall's about the center of his army (which is near the present Meeting House in Stanton.) The British army had landed below Elkton and was coming up the post road to Christiana Bridge, and was hourly expected to appear in front of the Amermican army, about a mile and half distant from them. Uncle Danie's home (Hale-Byrnes House) and mill was right on the road about 3/4 of a mile south of the American army, what a situation his and Father's family were in, at this juncture and the battle was to expected to commence every hour. The house would be shot down or be torn to pieces with cannon balls. Many families removed their goods up some miles into the country. Uncle Daniel and our family remained, and I have heard my mother say that she intended when the battle began to take us children down into the cellar under a large arch which was under the chimney. When the British army arrived at Christiana Bridge, three miles south of us, they then left the road and went up north, intending to go around the American army six miles above. Information was soon given to General Washington of this, and next morning by day-light the whole American army was gone; they took the road by Brandywine Springs and arrived at Chadd's Ford before the British, where a battle took place and we will leave them. In those days of difficulty I well remember of eating our meals on wooden trenchers, and we were not particular about the article, so that it was something to eat; and in summer we ran barefooted, how different are the present times! Those times soon changed for the better after the peace." (Daniel Byrnes, son of Caleb Byrnes, grandson of Daniel Byrnes, Sr.) 1842.

She was born Unknown in Long Island, NY, and died Bef. 1830 in Fishkill, NY.

Notes for WILLIAM BYRNES: There is some indication that William was in business with his brother, Joseph, with the import business from Charleston, SC to and from Liverpool and Plymouth, England. William purchased mills and a tract of land comprising of 274 acres from Issac DePreyster Teller in June 1792 and entered a partnership as millers with Cyrus Newlin in September 1792 at Fishkill Bay running up both sides of the Fishkill Creek from the Hudson River about 1/2 mile with mill and other water rights. These mills were across the Hudson River in Dutchess Co. from his father's mills at Newburgh and New Windsor, NY which were in Ulster Co. -- turned Orange County in 1798. William and Cyrus Newlin were both of the "Friends" faith. The partnership dissolved in 1811 and Cyrus had the lower portion of the land and mill. Later, William's son, Joseph, and Robert Newlin, son of Cyrus, erected a mill on the navigable waters of Fishkill Creek. They dug a canal from the old Madam Brett dam, to convey water to their wheel. The mill burned in the 1830s. (See pictures of the mill remains and Fishkill Creek and Madam Brett dam that were taken by me in 1999.) They dissolved partnership and each built a brick structure. Mr. Newlin continued milling; Mr. Byrnes mill was used for the manufacture of white lead in the 1830s.

Notes for SARAH TOWNSEND: Sarah Townsend is not mentioned in William's will; thus, we assume that she died before he died.

She married JOHN POULTENY May 27, 1791 in Philadelphia, PA (Source: Philadelphia Monthly Meeting notes, Vol II, p. 625.). He died in Philadelphia, PA.

Notes for LYDIA BYRNES: Joseph's sister and daughter of Daniel and Dinah Byrnes. She is older than Joseph by 2 years. She is the second wife of John Poultney whom she married on May 27, 1791 and lived in Philadelphia. October 24 1827 Lydia and children recrq from ND Monthly meeting. Lydia and children Ann, Daniel Byrnes and Lydia Byrnes set off to Spruce Street monthly meeting November 11,20 1833. Lydia certified to Philadelphia MM S Dist. October 18, 1784.

Notes for JOHN POULTENY: John Poultney first married Ann Savery, daughter of William and Mary Savery of Philadelphia at Philadelphia meeting November 1, 1781. They had 2 children: Mary born March 9, 1784 and Elizabeth born August 25, 1786.

8 Ann died and was buried August 4, 1789 at age 27. John Poulteny then married Lydia Byrnes in May 27, 1791. They had the following children: Sarah Pancoast, born August August 9, 1792; Ann born February 19, 1795; Daniel Byrnes born June 30, 1799; and Lydia Byrnes born August 7, 1805. I believe that they lived in the southern district of Philadelphia.

Children of LYDIA BYRNES and JOHN POULTENY are: i. SARAH PANCOAST4 POULTNEY, b. August 9, 1792; m. GIBBS.

Notes for SARAH PANCOAST POULTNEY: Sarah Pancoast Poultney Gibbs was dis mou in December 12, 18 1833 -- probably married outside of Friends Faith.

11. JOSEPH3 BYRNES (DANIEL2, DANIEL1) was born December 15, 1769 in Wilmington, DE (Source: Quaker Records), and died January 11, 1841 in NYC, buried Houston Cemetery NYC (Source: Quaker Records). He married REBECCA P. CLARKE April 15, 1795 in New York City (Quaker) (Source: Quaker Records), daughter of NATHANIEL CLARKE and MARY /?/. She was born Abt. 1775 in N. Y. (Source: Quaker Records), and died Abt. 1820 in buried in Houston Cemetery NYC (Source: Quaker Records).

Notes for JOSEPH BYRNES: Joseph Byrnes was born December 15, 1769, presumably in Wilmington, DE as the fifth child of Daniel Byrnes and Dinah Hichen Byrnes. Joseph grew up at near-by Stanton on the White Clay Creek in what is now known as the Hale-Byrnes House until the mid 1780s. There he had opportunity to meet Generals George Washington, Greene, Lafeyette and others as they used his father's house to plan the battle of Brandywine. He was able to play with his siblings and cousins (Caleb and Mary Byrnes' boys) while living there. In 1784 he moved to Philadelphia with his family until they moved to New Windsor, Cornwall, NY area in 1791. He apparantly stayed in Philadelphia with Robert Ralston then moved to NYC in 1792. Daniel had apparantly helped Joseph set up a import business to transport linen and other goods to and from Plymouth and Liverpool England to America at Charleston and NYC. Joseph was certified to Philadelphia MM S District, received December 29, 1784; was Certified to NYC granted by Philadelphia MM S. District April 25, 1792. Joseph apparently never lived in Fishkill or New Windsor but was in business perhaps in NYC by the early 1790s. From the New York Monthly Meeting: "Joseph, s Daniel & Dianah, Corn., NY, married Rebecca Clarke, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Clarke on April 15, 1795 in New York City. Joseph d 1-11-1841 ae 71y 26d bHS; m NY 4-15-1795 Rebecca P. Clarke, dt Nathaniel & Mary (dec) NY. Ch: Elizabeth b 8-1801 d 8-1802 ae ly, Robert Ralston dis 1825, Walter, Caroline dis 1824, cf. Phila. 4-25-1792 (clear); ct Bush River, SC 4-6-1803 for Rebecca with 3 ch named; ct same for Joseph, conditional, he being bankrupt. If not accepted, to be dealt with. He settled in Charleston, SC". Apparently Rebecca and the children returned to NYC near her father. Joseph returned after his import business failed in SC. His occupation is unclear after his import business. He outlived his wife by quite a few years. A letter from him to relatives in 1830 have him visiting his daughter Caroline and worrying about his son Robert who was a widower. He also mentions his nephew, Joseph T. Byrnes, son of William. William had recently passed away and Joseph T. had inherited William's estate. (Sarah, William's wife had already died and Letty, Joseph T.'s wife had just died, according to this letter.) Joseph, our 3-great grandfather, died January 11, 1841 and is buried in NYC at Houston Street Quaker Cemetery. It was interesting to note that Joseph did not inherit further material goods or land from his father in 1797. Apparantly, Daniel had done much to set both Joseph and William up in their businesses. More research needs to be done on Joseph in NYC and in Charleston, SC, where he and his family lived around 1800 and were still found in the Charleston, SC 1810 Census. He was an importer/exporter of linen and goods to Plymouth, and Liverpool ENGLAND, according to family legend.

Notes for REBECCA P. CLARKE: Rebecca Pricilla Clarke was born about 1775 and was the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary /?/ Clarke of NYC.

9 They were devout Quakers. She had a sister Rachel and a brother John Clarke. Rebecca was born about 1775 in NYC and died there about 1820. She married Joseph on April 15, 1795. She and Joseph had 4 children, 3 of which survived to adulthood. Her mother was already deceased when she married. She is buried in the Houston Quaker Cemetery in NYC.

Notes for WALTER BYRNES: Walter Byrnes came from Bush River SC to on the Schooner "Sunflower" January 18, 1822. His brother Robert (our great-great grandfather) soon followed. It is thought that Walter migrated towards New Orleans then to Vidalia, LA. Concordia Parish and was elected sheriff in August 18, 1824 until May 1, 1833. He was willed a set of dueling pistols by Judge ...... who was killed in a duel about 1841. According to a brief history of Concordia Parish on May 12, 1843, W. Byrnes and W. G. Beal, Commissioners for the Police , contracted with James M. Vandervoort for the building of a two story brick Court House. Walter was known for his stability. As far as we know he was a bachelor . His death date is unknown and was not found in the Natchez City Cemetery, where most of the Vidalia folk were buried due to flooding on the side of the river. We are looking on the Louisiana side of the MS River for his death records.

Daniel Byrnes recalls the following from his youth: "As the milling business was good, Uncle Daniel (our 4- great grandfather) got soon to be well off in the world and living on the post road at White Clay Creek Mill. He had many visitors to call and see him with his wife (Dinah Hichen) who was one of the very kindest women that I ever knew. This brings up fresh to my recollection some of the liveliest feelings of sensibility, those of youth. Joseph Byrnes (our 3-great grandfather) and Caleb Byrnes, his tow youngest children and my brother Jonathan and self being near their age and living one mile apart, were often together both day and night. We all four often slept inone bed, and we have all four often rode one together behind the other on uncle's (Daniel) gray horse but the one next to the tail had to hold fast to keep on. Them were the finest times either of us have erver seen since, going to school and into swim or after as fine times as we swam on the tide water we had some beautiful plans for bathing and in the winter for skating from our mill dam to Uncle Daniel's and back. One time I remember Caleb was on the creek skating and picked me up in his arms and skated away with me. He was a good skater. All these fine times happened 50 years ago and now most of those then living have passed away and are becoming fainter and fainter to our recollection. The very place where this hospitable family lived seems to have forgotten that it was then the center of kindness and plenty of the neighborhood. The very gate with its iron latch that opened into 11 the yard is gone and poor Dutch Peter, the miller who fell down the hatch and broke his arm, where is he -- no more." Daniel tells us that he was born at Red Clay Creek Mill, moved to Wilmington, then to Baltimore 14 years, then back to Wilmington, and lastly to the borough of Doylestown, Bucks County, PA. Daniel married Rachel Bull in Baltimore April 18, 1804 and had two children. Jonathan was born April 2, 1805 and Eleanor was born November 30, 1807. They moved back to Wilmington in May of 1810. His wife Rachel died of consumption in December 1810. Daniel married, second, Esther Fussell in May 19, 1816. That had one son, Jacob Fussell Byrnes, born April 19, 1821.

When he was about 3 years old his parents went to the Bush River area near Charleston, SC where his father was in the import-export business. We are not sure where he studied Law. Robert came to New Orleans as a young man about the time his brother Walter arrived on the Schooner, "Sunflower" in 1822. Robert became a poet and a lawyer. He practiced law in New Orleans with Thomas Farrar McCaleb and thus met Thomas's sister, Martha Arimenta McCaleb, daughter of David and Matilda Farrar McCaleb, whom he married on November 12, 1823 at Cold Springs, Claiborne County, MS. They lived in Baton Rouge, LA and came to McCaleb Station in Claiborne Co., MS often. Their 2 children, Emily Caroline and Charles Ralston were born there. Martha died of a fever when Charles was about 2 years old. Robert, despondent, tried to continue his law and poetry but died about 3 years later himself, leaving his children orphaned and in the hands of his in-laws to rear. He died on February 25, 1831 in Vidalia, LA while visiting his brother, Walter, who was sheriff of Concordia Parish and lived in Valdalia. Notes for CAROLINE R. BYRNES: Caroline Byrnes, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca P. Clarke was born about 1799. She married William Minturn from LeRay on November 5, 1823. She was disowned from the Quaker Friends an 1825 when the certificate was not sent. They had 3 children, 1 daughter and 2 sons by 1830, according to Joseph's letter. They lived in NYC in 1830. Notes from Quaker Quarterly and Joseph's letter. All in all she and William Minturn had 10 children. The dates of the Minturn children would indicate that this is the family. August 13, 1885 New York Post reported her death, age 86. Her parents married in 1795, and she was probably born about 1797/8. Some sources have her and William living in Flushing, Long Island, NY; others have them living in Manhatten. Her father, Joseph was buried in the Friends Cemetery on Houston Street in 1840. She and William H. Minturn removed to New Brunswick, NJ about 1849. Sarah Batchelor replies that "New York Post May 7, 1824: 'yesterday morning at St. John's church William H. Minturn to Carolyne R. Byrnes, daughter of joseph Byrnes, all of this city'. August 13 1885 New York Post reported her death, aged 86. The Minturns in New York were shipping merchants, hence connections with Charleston. (As was Joseph Byrnes, Caroline's father.)

He married PEARL TAYLOR July 20, 1937 in Hewitt, Waco, TX (Source: Family records). She was born April 3, 1902 in Osage, McLeanan Co., TX, and died April 13, 1997 in Port Gibson, MS.

Notes for WILLIAM HOWARD MCCALEB: William (Bill) was born November 23, 1903 in Claiborne Co. at Insmore as the older son of Dr. & Undine McCaleb. He was a curious and well read child. Although he was unable to complete a formal education and worked hard on the family farm, actually running the farm, building "Byrnemore" and helping his family, he was one of the most well read persons one ever knew. He had a great sense of history, geography, and philosophy. He was an especially kind man, frugal but caring, and interested in everything that he could learn. Bill married Pearl Taylor July 20, 1937 in Hewitt TX and brought his bride back to the family farm, "Byrnemore". There they worked hard together running the place; also, she taught school and supported his endeavors. They had a daughter, Katherine Anne McCaleb in January 1942. Bill devoted his life to his family and cousins around. He was always there for us. He could fix anything. He kept the old Erben Organ at Epiphany going and pumped it so that his mother could play for services. Bill died in Port Gibson at the home of his daughter July 5, 1984. He is buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Notes for PEARL TAYLOR: Pearl Taylor was born in Lennon Co., TX April 3, 1902 as one of the younger of several Taylor children. She always loved Texas as that remained her favorite topic. She is committed to her family and her McCaleb Byrnes family. She is an outgoing sweet person. She was always the life of the party and enjoyed young people. She had many talents in teaching anything but taught first grade most of her career. She was a hard worker, wonderful cook and entertainer. She did much to keep Epiphany Church going and was a 'second mother' to many of the younger cousins. (especially me) She and Bill McCaleb married July 20, 1937 in Hewitt, TX then she moved to Claiborne Co., MS where she has resided the rest of her life. She worked hard at Byrnemore keeping the place going with her husband. She taught school from the early 1940's til she was well over 80 years of age. She was talented in music as well as plays. After the death of her husband in 1984 she lived in Port Gibson until the end. She died peacefully 10 days after her 95th birthday. She probably influenced more young people during her life time than anyone else in the county.

He grew up on the farm with his brothers and under the care of the servants and his mother. Burton was baptized at Epiphany Episcopal Church in 1916. He was confirmed at the Episcopal Center at LSU on May 26, 1935, according to his Confirmation Certificate. He was often an independent thinker. He attended Hermanville school through high school then went to LSU for a little over a year studying geology. He then decided that he would rather farm and came home to work with his father and older brother, Lucian. He met and married Marguerite Heidel in 1937 just after he purchased his own farm. They moved into their home (which was built in 1915, the year of Daddy's birth) and lived there and farmed the remainder of their lives. He tilled the soil for grains, cotton, and beans and raised cattle and hogs. He especially enjoyed digging in the dirt and building on the farm. Burton and Marguerite had 5 children, farmed, and helped much in the community. He was a deeply religious man and read his Bible regularly. He was an Episcopalian but often disagreed with the Nation Council of Churches; therefore, much of his religion was self taught. He enjoyed politics and kept the dinner conversation going in that realm. He suffered from allergies and emphysema during his later years and retired from farming. He never lost interest in the land and never stopped digging in the dirt until the last. He contracted pneumonia and died December 13, 1986. He is buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, MS. Daddy can always be remembered for his love of land, a strong faith and his family. He worked hard, upheld the highest of moral and ethical standards for himself and his family. Although somewhat shy to those outside his immediate family, he led his family with authority as the patriarch. He is missed.

Notes for MARGARET ANN (ANN) BYRNES: Margaret Ann Byrnes was born at Carlisle, MS on the family farm during a rare snowstorm on January 10, 1940. When Dr. Hudson came to deliver me he had to come up the hill in a horse drawn buggy due to the ice. I grew up on the farm and attended Hermanville Elementary School, loved to be creative, read, and especially loved music. I was raised in the Episcopal Church that my 3-great grandfather had help build; also, we attended the Methodist Sunday School in Carlisle when we had none of our own at Epiphany. At Epiphany I learned to play the old Erben Organ. I was Confirmed in October, 1950. Grandmother Byrnes gave me a piano when I was 10, which I loved. I was an asthmatic child and went to live in a higher and drier climate in the Hill Country of Texas at Junction when I was 12. I stayed there 3 years. While there I also took organ lessons and substituted at the Episcopal Churches in Junction and Ft. McKavett, TX. After I returned to MS in the 10th grade I played French Horn in the band, was active in home economics and Beta Club. I graduated 3rd in my class in 1957 and attended All Saints Episcopal Girls School in Vicksburg, MS for a year. Then I attended MSCW and studied home economics and took pipe organ lessons. I was a member of the Canterbury Club and American Guild of Organists as well as the Home Economics Club. I completed my bachelor's at Belhaven College in Jackson in biology in 1963. There I was also a member of the American Guild of Organist, President of Canterbury, active in Kappa Delta Episolon honorary Education Sorority, a student teacher in the biology department and practice taught in the Jackson public schools. I then taught school in Natchez, MS for 2 1/2 years. While there I substituted at Trinity Episcopal Church with the organ, was in the Pilgrimage as a substitute for Cousin Susan Ogden and headed the Nursing Club for the students. I married Herbert Jackson Alleman at Manakin Episcopal Church near Midlothian, VA with my childhood minister, Dr. W.G. Christian officiating on December 28, 1964. The summer after Jack and I married we moved TN to work in a summer camp then to Nashville, TN for a year then. to Washington DC area. We have lived in this area ever since. We were active in Grace Episcopal Church and Day School, where I was president of that Day School board and a Sunday School teacher. In 1982 we went to St. Luke Lutheran Church, home of Jack's grandfather's church, Dr. Herbert Christian Alleman (who was a retired seminarian and professor of Greek, Hebrew, and Old Testament and author of note.) The minister was his prodigies, Dr. Raymond Shaheen then later Dr. Henry Snyder. I have academic honors in Kappa Delta Epsilon and Phi Beta Phi. I taught schools at Good Counsel HS for boys and Academy of the Holy Names for girls. I completed a MA in science teaching under a Chesapeake Bay Environmental Science grant in 1980.
