BMCC STUDY ABROAD CHINA
Course: CHI 476, Chinese Civilization and Language (3 credits) Prerequisite: CHI 101/105 or higher, or Language Placement Exam plus 3 credits in any foreign language Summer 2020 Session 5W2 – July 15 – August 12 (Classes at BMCC: June 26, July 10)
Professor Ling Luo of the Modern Language Department will take a group of BMCC students to China in summer 2020. Her research interests include comparative cultures, Chinese cultural history and language acquisition using technologies. Her book “Modernization of Nanjing City” is considered one of the most important books on Chinese urban history. She has led several study abroad programs to China and looks forward to leading a new group of students on an adventure!

Course Description BMCC’s Study Abroad in China program has been designed for students with a beginner’s level of Chinese. Students will participate in skill-based language learning to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition to learning about Chinese traditions, cultural patterns, literature and history, they will gain first-hand experience about contemporary Chinese life and learn about the development of modern China. The course includes various cultural activities and visits to temples, museums and historic landmarks. All majors may apply – see additional eligibility requirements here.
Location The program is based in Nanjing, China at Nanjing University. Nanjing is one of China’s ancient capital cities through which students can understand a large part of China’s history. Students will also visit the ancient capital of Beijing where they will see the Great Wall and other cultural relics. Students will conclude their trip in Shanghai, the largest city and financial center of China.
Housing and Meals Students will reside in dormitories provided by Nanjing University, as well as hotels in other cities. Meals will be provided by the University and local restaurants.

Week 1 Class topics and experiential learning include: - Chinese Language Lesson - The Essence of China’s History and Culture The Food Mystique; Chinese Traditional Architecture and Religious Sites - Arrive in Beijing and visit Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and additional historic sites and temples - Cultural Activities (includes taiji, calligraphy, Chinese painting) - Transfer to Nanjing
Week 2 Class topics and experiential learning include: - Chinese Language Lesson - The Role of Language in Preserving & Transmitting Chinese Culture - The Role of Hanzi in Chinese Culture - Cultural Activities and visits to Ye-sun Mausoleum and Nanjing Museum - Volunteer Activity
Week 3 Class topics and experiential learning include: - Chinese Language Lesson - Chinese Culture Today: Women, Education and Cultural Customs in China - Cultural Activities and visits Nanjing Folk Museum and Confuse Temple
Week 4 Class topics and experiential learning include: - Chinese Language Lesson - Chinese Ways of Thinking and Behaving Gender in China; Education; The Chinese and Foreign People - Visit and depart from Shanghai
Group travel to NYC (August 12)
Cost Tuition: 3 credits | Program Fee: covers international airfare, program-related activities and transportation in China, housing, meals and international health insurance; the fee is subject to change.
- BMCC Student Fee: Appx. $1,600 (includes BMCC Association Scholarship, which covers 60% of the program fee) - Non-BMCC Student Fee: Appx. $4,000
