CESSNA FLYER (25) NOVEMBER 2019 Wing attach component cleanup With the cabin skins and related com- ponents thoroughly cleaned and inspected, it’s time to carefully inspect and clean the wing attach components. The fairly typi- cal corrosion seen in the photo (Page 26, bottom left) can be difficult to clean. The first issue to deal with is rusty bolts and nuts found in these structurally critical areas. They must be removed and inspected by a licensed technician. One final step in protecting these structurally critical components is, after the initial chromate application, we also spray just these wing attach areas with CorrosionX or ACF-50 to add an extra layer of corrosion protection. The final wing attachment point to check on in strut-braced Cessnas is the lower lift strut attach points. CESSNA FLYER (27) NOVEMBER 2019 The best procedure would be to thor- oughly clean this area, then have your maintenance technician perform the inspection before chromate is applied. This critical area will also be addition- ally protected when the belly is fogged with ACF-50 or CorrosionX after the lower strut attach structure is sprayed with chromate.

Cleaning under the floors With all the floor inspection panels removed, it’s time to clean up what will likely be years of dirt, oil and possible corrosion on the belly skins. We buy real zinc chro- mate from Aircraft Spruce in 18-ounce spray cans. Zinc chromate is nasty stuff, but it really protects aluminum from surface corrosion. Follow the warnings on the can. We like 18-ounce spray cans because they are small and light and allow you to get the chromate into difficult places. When a spray can is full, you can spray up and under the bottom surfaces of structural components such as bulk- heads, cabin tops and stringers, so spray those surfaces first. When the can quits spraying, start a new one for the hard-to- spray areas. When the difficult areas are covered, spray the vertical surfaces with the par- tially empty cans. They will still perform quite well when held upright as you spray the vertical sides of the cabin, spars, etc. Allow the chromate to cure over- Using a dental pick to carefully clean contaminates night before removing all the masking. trapped in between spar attach components. It’s safe to say at this point in the proj- ect that the worst part of interior renova- tion is behind you. There’s a lot more to do but, in my opinion, none of what is left is as messy and tedious as corrosion removal and cabin cleanup. On that positive note, we’ll sign off for now. Next time, it’s on to prepping and painting cabin doors, door jambs, seat frames and cabin trim components. Oh yes, that means repairing that lovely Cessna plastic. Until then, fly safe!

WICHITA, Sept. 16, 2019 – Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, is celebrating 50 years since the inaugural flight of the first Citation jet, the Cessna Citation 500. Today, the Citation family represents the most popular line of business jets with more than 7,500 aircraft delivered worldwide amassing more than 35 mil- lion flight hours. These impressive machines are renowned for their ability to combine reliability, efficiency and comfort with advanced technology and class-leading performance. “From that first Citation flight 50 years ago and through every Citation model produced since, our business jet programs are deeply rooted in the com- bined efforts of our employees, our suppliers and our customers,” said Ron Draper, president and CEO of Textron Aviation. “Today’s range of Citations—from the entry-level Citation M2 up through the Citation Longitude— incorporates our unwavering com- mitment to value-added innovation, design and production excellence and unrivaled customer support.” Launched in October 1968 as the Fanjet 500, the new business jet com- bined the company’s expertise as the market leader in producing single and twin-engine General Aviation aircraft with its proficiency in producing mili- tary jet aircraft.

That spirit of innovation continues today with more advanced design and production processes. “The same vision that led to the cre- ation of the original Citation 50 years ago still guides us today,” Draper said. “We are building on our history as an industry leader and investing in the future to continue to exceed customer expectations.” The Citation series of business jets has evolved to offer an unmatched range of capabilities, systems and options that allows customers to expand their business reach. Steven Hinton has won seven Unlimited-class national champion- ships at the Reno Air Races, doing so in the highly modified P-51Ds Strega and Voodoo. In 2017, Steven set the world speed record for a propeller-driven, piston- powered aircraft, doing so in Voodoo with a speed of 531.53 mph—break- ing the record of 528 mph set by Lyle Shelton in 1989 in the F8F Bearcat Rare Bear, which had previously bro- ken Steve Hinton’s record.

Tickets for the banquet are now on sale at EAA.org/WrightBrothers, and are $60 for EAA members and $80 for nonmembers.

FLYING MUSICIANS SEEKS STUDENT MUSICIAN SOLO SCHOLARSHIP NOMINATIONS

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 23, 2019 – The Flying Musicians Association (FMA) recognizes the correlation between hard work and skill required by both learning to fly and learning music—practice, precision, working with others, multitasking and ultimately, per- formance—and to that end, has opened the floor to nominations for the sixth year to passionate student musicians for the 2020 FMA Solo program. The program has averaged 2-plus scholarships per year in the first five years while welcoming nearly 200 new student members into the FMA network. The 2020 FMA Solo Scholarship Program is open for nominations from music teachers/directors. This scholar- ship is unique, assisting an aspiring flight student from zero time to solo. FMA is excited to enter the sixth year of this scholarship program because of the impact it has on the student, the

overvoltage sensor. When a Zeftronics voltage regulator is installed, the original Cessna overvoltage senor is removed.

Happy flying, Steve

Q: Hi Steve, I have been doing some upgrades on my Cessna 172B. I recently replaced one of the fuel caps with Cessna Part No. C156003-0101. Prior to me owning the aircraft, the previous owner put the same part number fuel cap on the other . Now, both tanks have the newer vented fuel caps. Airworthiness Directive 79-10-14 R1 requires the replacement of at least one of the fuel caps to ensure the system is vented. They reference Cessna Service Letter SE 77-6 in the Airworthiness Directive for compliance. My question is can you get a copy of this letter? And what is the part number on the fuel cap? Is it mentioned in the service letter? I do have the 8130 form from Cessna so it is the real deal, but I want to sign this thing off so I can be done with this AD. I tried to get to the service letter through CessnaSupport.com and ww2.txtav. com but could not get to it.

Tom

A: Hi Tom, The reason SE 77-06 is not on the Cessna support site is because it was superseded by SEB 92-27 in 1992. When a Cessna service bulletin is superseded, it’s no longer shown on the public service information page. I have sent a request to Textron Aviation (Cessna) that it include all service infor- mation on its website, especially if an AD refers to a service bulletin by number. SEB 92-27 specifies the fuel cap part Airbags Save Lives! number. The approved vented cap is Part No. C156003-0101. (We’ve posted a SOARS • Universal Airbag System for Part 23 copy of SEB 92-27 on the Cessna Flyer State of the Art Restraint System Aircraft forum; see Resources. —Ed.) • 2- and 3-Point Configuration These caps are available from most $2,580 • Installed by Local A&P Mechanic supply houses and cost around $150 www.AmSafe.com • System covers Pilot & Co-Pilot Seat each.

Happy flying, Steve

CESSNA FLYER (72) NOVEMBER 2019 Follow-up Q: That is awesome! That is exactly what I was looking for. I will print out that service bulletin and include it with my 8130 tag for the fuel cap in my records. That will end the AD for my plane. You guys are great! Thank you so much for the help. I love the magazine, too! It has great articles for me to get in touch with the GA Cessna airplanes. I have 35-plus years turning wrenches on Gulfstreams, Challengers, Citations and Learjets. The magazine helps me out greatly!

Thank you again! Tom
