Application Attorney Examination Application July 2017 State Bar Office of Admissions 645 South 200 East Salt Lake City, Utah 84111-3834 [email protected]

INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

The practice of law is a privilege, not a right. An Applicant has the burden of proving by clear and convincing evidence that he or she has the character and fitness to practice law in Utah. The first step in meeting this burden is to complete and file the application and all associated materials in a careful and timely manner. An Applicant's cooperation, comprehensiveness, and candor in the application process reflects on the likelihood that the Applicant will truthfully deal with courts and opposing parties, the Applicant's attitude toward authority, and whether the Applicant will follow rules, laws, and standards once a licensed .

Instructions are provided in italics throughout the Application. More detailed instructions and information on the application process can be found in a Word document on the Admissions Website. You should read the Word document before you complete this application. As you complete the application be sure to read all instructions and each question carefully.

This application conforms with the requirements outlined in the Rules Governing Admission to the Utah State Bar ("Rules"). You should refer to these Rules (available on the Admissions Website at http://www.utahbar.org/admissions/rules-governing-bar-admissions/) prior to completing the application.

Neither the Bar nor its representatives has the authority to waive the deadlines, fees, or requirements contained in the Rules.

COMPLETING AND FILING THE APPLICATION

You will complete and file this Application online. In addition, you will need to complete or obtain other documents which will be uploaded using your Synergy account.

A s you answer certain questions you will see instructions to complete a particular form or upload a supporting document. These instructions are underlined in blue (these are not hyperlinks). Make note of those that apply to you as you go. This will help you gather the necessary documentation once the online application is submitted.

Absolute and complete candor is required. Omissions or misstatements in the application are presumed intentional. Failure to be completely candid in your application will result in denial of admission, or discipline if you have already been admitted.

All questions must be fully answered. If a particular question does not apply or the answer is 'none' or 'not applicable', so state. If you are uncertain whether your situation falls within the scope of a particular question, assume that it does.

If the question calls for an explanation, provide a detailed narrative of all the circumstances and events leading up to and surrounding the incident(s) described in your response. Do not simply refer the Committee to read the attached documentation you provide (for example, a police report or pleading); it is your opportunity to explain the situation in your own words.

NOTE: DO NOT USE THE 'LESS THAN' SYMBOL WHEN COMPLETING THIS APPLICATION. IT CAUSES AN ERROR. For Reference Only DO NOT fill out this form for submission to the Bar. It is posted merely to give you an overview of what questions to expect when you fill out the online application form through your Synergy account.

This is a sample of an attorney examination application. If you are a different applicant type, there may be some variations when you go to fill out your application, so make sure you read the instructions and questions carefully as you fill out the online form.
