Volume 1 1732-1816 Volume 2 1817-1922

Collection of Playbills etc. relating to Drury Lane and other theatres

At the end of Drury Lane Volume 1 there is a set of cuttings from the Times Literary Supplement 1944 describing the collection.

The second section lists other “Toy Theatre” material, mainly portraits, by publisher.

The whereabouts of the individual sheets in the collection are given in the format “a/b”, where “a” is the volume number (1-4) and “b” is the page number. Some sheets may appear twice, when they are used in different plays. An asterisk denotes where the print is hand-coloured, this appears to always be by professional colourists, otherwise all sheets are uncoloured (plain).

Individual sheets are not described. It is possible to visit and take photographs of them for study purposes. Where the signature of artists appears this has been noted in italics. Sheets are typically of the “standard size” used during the “Penny Plain” period, divergence from this is noted as either “miniature” or “large” (sheets folded into the volumes).

NOTES ON THE CUTTINGS FROM THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

These consist of three items:

An article “Juvenile Drama – a Birmingham Bequest” by Phyllis Hartnoll, Part 1 published Saturday 7/10/1944.

Part 2 published Saturday 14/10/1944.

A letter by Mr.M.Willson Disher, published 25/11/1944, which answered some queries raised by Hartnoll about “Gilderoy” and “The Brigand”.

The articles state that the collection was bequeathed to Birmingham Public Library in February 1940 and was bound in four volumes. No other background about the collection or Bennett is given.

It focuses on the Juvenile Drama (Toy Theatre) items in the collection stating that the scattering of these sheets through the four volumes is a “disadvantage for Juvenile Drama enthusiasts”. The author compares

Page 27 what she found with “Penny Plain, Twopence Coloured”, a book published by A.E.Wilson in 1925, which was then considered the authority on the subject. She notes many discrepancies but this was because Wilson’s book, although a major piece of work, contained many errors. Since then the research of George Speaight and others has gone a lot further and it is now perhaps amusing to see how frustrated Hartnoll must have been with Wilson’s publication. She also notes a number of plays that were “still available in 1943”. These are ones that were still being sold by Louisa and Selina Pollock from 73 Hoxton Street just before it finally closed that year.

The comments that are still of interest today include the identification of the playbook for “Montrose” as such, which she says was based on the performance given at Covent Garden on 15th February 1822. She notes the fact that the drawing of the characters for Mrs.Hebberd’s version of “The Tempest” are very crude. On the other hand she says that the various sheets by Marks have “beautifully coloured, most elaborate and well drawn figures”, which she says, ”seem to qualify him for a place of more importance in Juvenile Drama than he has hitherto been allotted”. She noted the “excellent selection of theatrical portraits” and was pleased to find the music for “Timour the Tartar” in the collection, a paly that was “still available”.

The author accepts no liability for any errors that this catalogue may contain.
