Good evening everyone and welcome to the New Croft for tonight’s home league game against Stanway Rovers who I would like to welcome to Haverhill and hope you have a safe journey home after the game. Well what a first month of the season we have experienced to date when after 5-6 months of no football and with the league starting a month behind schedule, we have found ourselves having to play through what I can only describe as an aggressive fixture schedule with 8 games played already in all competitions so far this season. The FA cup run of course was a pleasant distraction that added to the fixtures and we cannot thank you all for the fantastic support we experienced throughout the 3 cup games as the atmosphere was absolutely superb and I know the boys really appreciated this. Unfortunately a talented Maldon and Tiptree team brought our cup run to an end but I feel our injury hit squad gave a good account of themselves and our young team should feel proud of their efforts as in the process they managed to bring in some much needed finances into the club. The long injury list has been a massive challenge for Mark and his coaching team to deal with and this has 100% hit some of our league form especially on the road. I do however believe we have a talented squad that when fit, are more than a match for most teams in this league. Currently our results including Saturday’s defeat away to Whitton Utd, are not a true reflection of how good a team we are as the biggest challenge is fielding a fit 11 at the moment but on a positive, it was fantastic to see 3 of our u18 boys came off the bench to make their first team debuts where they all performed well and did the club proud. I must also again thank all the committee members and volunteers who are working tirelessly at the moment to look after the logistics of running a busy games schedule as many people would not understand the high level of work that goes on behind the scenes to get games on. What most people see is the 2 hours whilst here during the game but I see the hours before and after that goes into making sure the ground, equipment and the admin is always in tip top condition so these unsung volunteers need to be thanked as they are often forgot about and sometimes taken for granted. Stanway have experienced a mixed start to the season but they will always provide any team a tough game in this league but I’m hopeful with a few of our players returning from injury, we will see more consistency in our own form moving forwards. Enjoy the game, Ali - Chairman

www.pitchero.com/clubs/haverhillroversfc Match Report v Maldon & Tiptree

HAVERHILL ROVERS 0 v 3 MALDON & TIPTREE THE EMIRATES FA CUP - FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING Final expectations were in question when our visitors from Step 4, Isthmian League North Division who finished top of their league by a ‘country mile’ when all local football was cancelled due to Covid-19. This meant there was a huge mountain to climb for the lads especially with Marc’s team seriously depleted with injuries in key positions and which necessitated a major reshuffle of his available squad. To a man they responded magnificently in a very high tempo first half against a well drilled and physically superior side and had some very positive moments which kept the visitors at bay for the most part, in particular with Charlie Davies alias ‘Forrest Gump’ covering every blade of grass throughout the half with his strength, energy and endeavour. A promising attack and penetrating run from Dan Olive found Tom Stoker who hit a crisp shot missing the target by just inches with the keeper beaten. Luke Haines was next with a speculative shot from the right which caught McNamara off his line but again was just over his bar. Maldon counter attacked at every opportunity and with Rovers reshuffled defence all doing their jobs resolutely and managing to repel everything that was thrown at them. On 26 minutes yet another injury hit Rovers with Jacob Joseph unable to carry on and was replaced by Dan Toyer resulting in another positional reorganisation. He immediately showed his intent with a cracking shot which forced a good save from the Maldon keeper. With the first half coming to an end Maldon went ahead when William-Bushall was on hand to slot home, sliding in from a deep cross to the far post. After this disappointing set back Maldon doubled their lead in the 50th minute when Billy Cracknell was to shake off his marker and fire home through the crowded goal area. The visitors third and final goal of the game came in the 65th minute and was a little fortuitous when a fierce shot from Barnwell crashed against the crossbar but Scott Kemp was well placed to net the rebound and the tie was effectively over. Despite this Rovers never gave up but there were no real signs that the deficit could be reduced as we had seen from the Woodbridge turnaround on Saturday and tired legs understandably came into play. The visitors were on the day a lot sharper and alert and deserved their result but I’m sure our lads gave them a much closer game than they would have expected before the game and the score line was certainly no disgrace and the defence on the day were outstanding.

Our Opponents History In Brief

Records show that the current Stanway Rovers FC reformed on Tuesday 10th July 1956. However local newspaper cuttings tell us that there was a football club operating in the Stanway area in the early 1900's. The Club minute book shows that the first member meeting was held at St. Albright's Hall, Stanway, the meeting being chaired by the late Jack Poole of the County FA. In these early years the Rovers played their matches on the King George 5th playing field Clairmont Road, Lexden, which is only a short footballs kick from their current Hawthorns home. They were accepted into Div 2 of the Colchester & East Essex League, and by 1960 they had gained promotions to the Premier Division. A Reserve Team was formed starting in Division Five. The records then show that in 1961 the Club moved its home to Stanway Secondary School, again just around the corner from the Hawthorns. The Headmaster at that time Mr Gardham became Club President, an office that all Headmasters at the School held over the 18years or so that the Club stayed there. The facilities at the School were second to none, the Club having use of the gymnasium/ sports hall and the Schools soccer pitches from 1964 onwards. In 1967/68 the Rovers won the Colchester & East Essex League, and the 1973-74 season saw Stanway Rovers enjoying their most successful season to date when they won the League title, all the other competitions trophies, defeated a League Representative side, and went on to the quarter finals of the Essex Junior Cup. In 1974-75, the Club reached the Final of the Essex Junior Cup losing 1-0 to Takely, the match being played at Grays Athletic FC. 1975-76 season saw the first team join the Essex & Suffolk Border League playing in Division 1. At the start of the 1978-79 season, the Rovers were placed into the new Division Two of the Border League finishing in 3rd position and gaining promotion to Division One. The Reserve Team had at this time also joined the Border League. In 1979, the 'home' of the Rovers was subject of discussion with the Local Authority, who agreed to lease the Club 4.6 acres of land in New Farm Road for a 99 year period. Stanway Rovers finally had its own home - and the first wooden Clubhouse was opened on 18th November 1982, carrying the name of the Hawthorns after the shrub which grew prolifically in the area at the time. Pushing on, in 1989-90 and 1990-91 the Club reached the Final of the Essex Intermediate Cup two years running, unfortunately losing both games 3-1. However, in the following 1991-92 season Stanway finished runners up in the Premier Division and their application to join the then Jewson League was duly accepted. Having been granted Senior Status the Clubs first game in the Jewson League Division 1 was a 2-2 draw at Swaffham Town on 22nd August 1992. Despite failing to receive a grant from the National Lottery, the Club finished the rebuilding of its current Headquarters at the Hawthorns - the Members Bar, Committee/Board Room and the Hawthorn suite of function rooms being officially opened on 28th March 2001 by Colchester MP Bob Russell. In November 2003 Jim McIntyre was appointed Manager with Ian 'Dan' Daly joining him as assistant a few months later - they set about assembling a good squad of players and after 14 seasons in Division One. In 2006 the Rovers were crowned Div 1 Champions and were also finalists in the First Division Knockout Cup. 2007/08 saw the first season under the joint management of young managers Rob Bate and Paul Symes which proved to be another successful campaign, during which Rovers beat Colchester United 2-1 at the old Layer Road stadium in the 3rd round of the Essex Senior Cup, reached a Club best 5th round in the F.A.Vase, and a very respectable 7th position finish in the League. 2008/09 saw the Club further consolidate itself in the Ridgeon’s Premier Division with a superb 9th position finish, along the way being the only Ridgeon’s team to beat run away champions Lowestoft at the Crown Meadow, F.A Vase 4th round, and winning the League Cup 4 - 2 on penalties against Leiston FC. Following the departure of Bate and Symes at the end of the season, 2009/10 saw the Rovers under the new Management of Steve Downey, who played for the Rovers for 3 seasons from 1996. Steve is probably one of the best known football coaches in Essex, and came to the Hawthorns with some 20 years’ experience of developing, managing and coaching football from the grass roots through to excellence level. In January 2011 Rovers parted company with Steve and immediately appointed ‘old boy’ Wayne Bond as caretaker manager to the end of the season. The Rovers moved quickly to secure the services of vastly experienced Steve Pitt from FC Clacton, and teamed him together with prolific ex-Rover striker Ray Turner. Steve is well known for taking Wivenhoe Town to within minutes of promotion to Ryman Premier, and spells in charge at Heybridge Swifts and FC Clacton, where he consolidated them in the Ridgeon’s in 2010/11 on a modest budget. In his first season in charge Pitt took the Rovers to their best ever finish in Step 5, with a 5th place finish in the Premier League, and in the last game of the campaign winning the League Challenge Cup 1 - 2 against Norwich United FC at Diss Town FC. The history books will show that Stanway Rovers FC were the last Club to win Ridgeon’s League honours, as we move into the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League era. After a couple of turbulent seasons which saw the departure of Pitt and his successor Barry Lakin after a short tenure, Angelo Harrop took over the side at the wrong end of the table in October 2013. Harrop successfully guided the team to safety and an eventual 13th place finish. Harrop led Rovers to a 3rd place finish in the 2014-15 Thurlow Nunn League as well as reaching the 5th round of the FA Vase. Rovers finished the 2015-16 season again in 3rd place under Harrop but with a record points tally of 90 points, staying unbeaten in the league from October to the season end. The 2016-17 season started with dropped points in August and Rovers solidified their top 5 position moving into Christmas. Harrop left the club in December 2016 to be replaced by ex-Colchester United captain Karl Duguid. The season petered out with Rovers clinging on to 6th position on the final day of the season. As Rovers moved into the new season Duguid reverted to Assistant Manager where he worked alongside Rovers new manager, the ex Colchester and Charlton midfielder, Kemi Izzet. In the 2017-18 season major changes took place within the club, with the departure of the chairman and Business manager plus the management team. Also the Football Association in their wisdom decided to re-organise the leagues and moved the club to the Essex Senior League. A new management team of Lee Fisher and Andy Jones took charge of the football team and a new Chairman appointed, and the reorganisation of the committee along with the appointment of Angelo Harrop as Football Director, with the plan to involve the Stanway Rovers Youth section into the club. This was a welcome return to the club. But the Story goes on! Following the departure of the club Chairman and the football management team the club called an emergency meeting and appointed Dave Jones as Chairman along with Kevin Mather as Vice Chairman.. The club also appointed Angelo Harrop as Director of Football and Terry Spillane as the first team manager along with Danny Slatter as coach. Still the story goes on! Following disappointing results the club parted company with the manager Terry Spillane near the end of the 2018-19 season. Danny Slatter took over on a temporary basis to see the season through, A disappointing season all round. On a positive note the FA decided to re-locate the club back to the Thurlow Nunn League for the 2019/20 season. Following the conclusion of the season the club appointed Danny Slatter as the manager and he quickly brought in his assistant Adam Munn as coach. With several new signings we look forward to the coming season. The start of the 19/20 season proved positive with several high profile players being brought into the club On returning to the club Craig Hughes damaged his Knee ligaments in training which ruled him out for majority of the season, on the positive side he brought his wealth of experience to the management team. The team climbed the table with positive results and into the new year where high in the table. Then as we all know the season fell apart and was declared null and void by the FA. Rovers finished third in the table and into the semi Finals of the Knockout cup. As we start the 20/21 season with so much uncertainty we are at least playing football…...So the story still goes on. www.pitchero.com/clubs/haverhillroversfc League Statement

The League Management Committee have decided that, owing to a shortened season and continued uncertainty around Covid-19, the League Cups – the League Challenge Cup, First Division KO Cup and Chell Trophy – will not be played this season.

Last Saturday’s League Round-Up

In The Premier….. Kirkley & Pakefield retained top spot in the Premier Division with Cameron Russell scoring two late goals to complete his hat trick in the 3-3 home draw with Stanway Rovers. This evening the Royals visit Wroxham, up to second and with the only 100% record in the division. It took an injury time winner for the Yachtsmen to beat visiting Walsham le Willows 2-1 and maintain that record.

In The First Division North….. Lakenheath are romping ahead in First Division North and made it 5 wins out of 5 by beating Great Yarmouth Town 4-0. Ryan Weaver scored two of the home side’s goals. Fakenham Town and Ipswich Wanderers both lost their 100% records when the two sides drew 1-1 at Clipbush Park.

In The First Division South….. The top two clashed in First Division South and it was visiting Athletic Newham who came out on top with a 3-1 success at Little Oakley. Frenford are now up to third after beating Coggeshall United 4-0 at The Drive and will go top with one point from Monday evening’s home match with Barkingside.

www.pitchero.com/clubs/haverhillroversfc The Last Time We Met Stanway Rovers

HAVERHILL ROVERS 1 v 1 STANWAY ROVERS Saturday 8th February 2020 - Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Haverhill moved up to 14th in the table with this point, Stanway moving up to 4th place themselves with a share of the goals and spoils. The away side edged ahead on the half hour mark, Danny Cunningham taking advantage of a gap at the end of the defensive wall to clip and curl a free kick from near the right corner of the area in at the near post past goalkeeper James Philp. The lead only lasted for three minutes, however, a free kick on the left being brought down on the edge of the Stanway area and Ben Bradley, whose initial shot was blocked, took advantage as the ball came down for a second time to put his follow up into the far bottom right corner from left of goal past the despairing hand of ‘keeper Luke Skinner. Chances after this were limited for both sides, Tom Blackwell having a free kick pushed away by Philp with 35 minutes gone in the best of the opportunities before the final whistle, Remi Garrett and substitute Tom Monk not troubling Philp and Gibbs shooting at Skinner in the second half. ROVERS : Philp, McCabe, Hall, Mills, Carroll, Porter, Abbott, Moody, Gibbs (Stoker, 76), Bradley, Haines (Dinnell, 80). Subs not used – Leavers, Hunt, Friel.

Our Very Own History In Brief

Haverhill Rovers were founded in 1886, but their beginnings are shrouded in some mystery. The club first started playing at Hamlet Croft in 1913; previously they played at Seven Acres, an area bordered on two sides by the old railway line and Wratting Road. They spent the 1908/09 season in the East Anglian League. Other clubs in that league at that time included Clacton Town and Halstead Town. At the start of the 1924/25 season Rovers joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League but, after finishing bottom at the end of the 1927/28 season, elected to leave that league. Eight years later, in the 1935/36 season, Rovers rejoined the Border League. In 1946/47, Rovers were runners up behind Colchester Casuals; however, the following year Rovers won not only the championship but also the Knock Out Cup, beating Brightlingsea United 1-0 in the final. In 1950/51 Rovers were runners up behind Stowmarket Town. In 1962/63 they won the league for the second time, retaining the title the following year, when they also won the Knock Out Cup again to record their second “double”. In 1964 Rovers joined the Eastern Counties League, finishing a creditable sixth in their first season and also winning the League Cup, defeating Stowmarket Town. The following year, Rovers again reached the final of the cup, but lost out to Lowestoft Town. Rovers finished in the bottom three every year from 1970 until 1977. In 1978, under the guidance of former player Roger Staples, Rovers were champions for the first and, so far, only time, pipping Great Yarmouth Town by one point. A crowd of 1,300, a record at the time, packed into Hamlet Croft to see the last game, the decider, against Chatteris Town. Unfortunately this proved to be a one off, as the following season saw them finish in the lower half of the table. After this the club made steady progress: 7th in 1989, 14th in 1990 and an excellent 4th in 1991, the first full season under manager Martin Murray. A glut of injuries at the start of 1991/92 meant a final placing of eighth. In 1988 Rovers reached the final of the League Cup for the fourth time, losing to Braintree Town. In national competitions Rovers have never reached the first round of the FA Cup, but reached the 6th Round (Quarter Finals) of the FA Vase in 1986/87, losing 3-1 at home to Warrington Town. The attendance on that day was 1,578, which broke the previous record attendance. The club has never won the Suffolk Premier Cup, losing in the final twice, in 1965/66 2-1 to Bury Town and in 1990/91 3-2 to Stowmarket Town. They have lifted the Invitation Cup three times. Rovers won the East Anglian Cup in 1990/91, beating Eynesbury Rovers 2-1 at Eynesbury in the final. Season 1995/96 saw Rovers relegated for the first time in their long history, but this disappointment was sweetened by winning the Suffolk Senior Cup for the first time (at Portman Road) at the end of the 1996/97 season. They were also defeated finalists in the Jewson League Cup, losing 2-0 at & Parkeston. 1997 saw Rovers win the Suffolk Senior Cup after they defeated Ipswich Wanderers 4-1 at Portman Road. They are also the only team to have lifted the First Division Knock Out Trophy three times (2-1 after extra time against Needham Market in 2001, 2-0 against Kirkley in 2004 and 3-1 against Saffron Walden Town in 2007). An excellent run in the FA Cup three seasons ago for Rovers included their best result in the past few years when, in the Second Round Qualifying in front of 504 spectators, they defeated Eastbourne Borough 1-0 on 30th September. Eastbourne were in the Conference South at the time, a huge four divisions above Rovers, but a goal by striker Paul Shaw three minutes into added time at the end of the game was enough to see them through and invoke a roar that was heard all around the town. This was then followed two rounds later with Aldershot Town, who were in the Conference, coming to the Croft in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round.
