The Globe was awarded a Pulitzer for public service for its coverage of the church abuse scandal that rocked the Boston archdiocese. (Charles Krupa/Associated Press) Most years I try to stay attentive, or at least awake, through the Academy Awards. Most years I fail. On Sunday, however, fatigue has an overwhelming counterweight — obvious self-interest. Plus, I will be sitting inside the Dolby Theatre. “Spotlight” brought to the big screen the first six months of a Boston Globe investigation that in 2002 revealed a decades-long coverup of serial sexual abuse by priests within the Boston Archdiocese. Liev Schreiber portrays me as the newly arrived top editor who launched that investigation, and his depiction has me as a stoic, humorless, somewhat dour character that many professional colleagues instantly recognize (“He nailed you”) and that my closest friends find not entirely familiar. The scandal disclosed by the Globe’s Spotlight investigative team ultimately took on worldwide dimensions. Fourteen years later, the Catholic Church continues to answer for how it concealed grave wrongdoing on a massive scale and for the adequacy of its reforms, as it should.

I argue that UTNO was initially successful by drawing on the legacy and tactics of the civil rights movement and explicitly combining struggles for racial and economic justice. Throughout their history, UTNO remained committed to civil rights tactics, such as strong internal democracy, prioritizing disruptive action, developing Black and working class leadership, and aligning themselves with community-driven calls for equity. These were the keys to their success. By the early 1990s, as city demographics shifted, the public schools were serving a majority working class Black population. Though UTNO remained committed to some of their earlier civil rights-era strategies, the union became less radical and more bureaucratic. They also faced external threats from the business community with growing efforts to privatize schools, implement standardized testing regimes, and loosen union regulations. I argue that despite the real challenges UTNO faced, they continued to anchor a Black middle class political agenda, demand more for the public schools, and push the statewide labor movement to the left.

    Mediawan and Anonymous Content are partnering to produce the series adaptation of French bestseller Civilizations Paris / Los Angeles, July 6, 2020 – Païva Studio (a Mediawan production label) and Mediawan Rights have acquired adaptation rights to French author Laurent Binet’s best-selling novel Civilizations, and are partnering with Anonymous Content to produce the series, an ambitious project with a high international potential. The series will be shot in South America and Europe in several languages. In Civilizations, the Incas prevail over the “Conquistadors”: Christopher Columbus never reaches America but Atahualpa takes over Charles V’s Europe – an over-the-top and yet plausible rewriting of global history by Laurent Binet, famous author of HHhH and The Seventh Function of Language. Civilizations was published in August 2019 in French (© Editions Grasset et Fasquelle) and was awarded the “Grand Prix du Roman” 2019 by the Académie Française. “I am very happy to partner with Anonymous Content, one of the most creative and prestigious studio in Hollywood, to give global exposure and the ambition it deserves to this fascinating novel and be able to count on the support of Mediawan Rights for this”, said Simon Istolainen, CEO of Païva. “We’re excited to partner with Mediawan and their Paiva Studio, two best in class teams, to bring Laurent’s riveting exploration of what might have been to a global audience,” said Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon.
