PEZAMANIA 26 “The World’s Largest Gathering of PEZ Collectors” MAY 2017 ISSUE 5 Hello to all !! ~ Well, Folks, the time is fast approaching to the big event in Cleveland: Pezamania 27 ! Information from our Host, Rick Marlowe, is that everything is pretty much set: We have filled the first two floors and half of the third floor of the Holiday Inn with rooms that will be open for Room Hopping ! We have lots of room reservations that do not have their Pezamania Convention Reservations in yet. So, we do not know if you will have your rooms open for Room Hopping or if you need tables in the Ballroom for Saturday's event. Please double check that you have registered for the Convention. Room registrations are becoming limited to King Rooms at the moment, but as Twin Rooms open, we get first chance at them. The Early Registration Raffle ends June 1st ! So, you still have time to get in your paid Pezamania Registration to have your name entered into the Raffle bowl. To go with our Christmas in July Convention Theme this year, there will be a best Christmas T-shirt/ Sweater Contest ~ but your sweater/T-shirt must not have a winter theme. This is Christmas in July, after all !! Check out the artwork by Sue & Steve Hearly on the Prize Plates we will use for the Pony Races and the Scavenger Hunt. Just beautifully done !! MAY 2017 ISSUE 5 Pezamania's Favorite Charity, The Gliding Stars, Shine Bright ~ There is no way if you have attended a Pezamania in the past several years that you would not know who the Gliding Stars are or what they're about! Just in case- The Gliding Stars is an adaptive ice skating program that Pezamania goers raise funds for during auctions at the convention. You even get to see some of these talented folks wandering the hallways with us. On Sunday, April 2nd, a gaggle of pezheads gathered at Rick and Sue Marlowe's house for a day of food, camaraderie, and fun. The Marlowe’s, the ever-gracious hosts they are, hosted lunch for their guests (it was fantastic, Sue!). After a couple of hours eating and discussing pez and other matters of the world, a small caravan departed for the Tam-O-Shanter in Sylvania to watch the Gliding Stars show off their talents. This year's theme was British Invasion. The Stars picked their favorites which included songs from Manfred Mann, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Hollies, The Beatles, and several other bands that were making a big break stateside in the mid 1960s. The highlights were not the songs of course but the super talented people on the ice! MAY 2017 ISSUE 5 These performers never cease to amaze with their ever-growing abilities and upbeat spirits. Everyone participates and has their very own moment in the spotlight. Several of them are even needing less and less assistance from their volunteers from one year to the next! Truly inspiring. Speaking of volunteers, each skater has one or two volunteers skating with them either moving the individual across the ice or just making sure they aren't going to fall. Big shoutout to them! And big shoutouts they all got with one of the largest audiences in attendance. The Gliding Stars never disappoint. If you're interested in seeing them perform, keep your eyes peeled on Pezamania's FaceBook page for 2018's date and time. Julie Jantz Photos from the Gliding Stars Show held April 2, 2017. MAY 2017 ISSUE 5 Collecting PEZ … An Alternative to Plastic ~ Hello. My name is Mark Bourland and I’m honored to have been asked to do a presentation at this year’s Pezamania. “Collecting PEZ … An Alternative to Plastic.” I started in the hobby about 12 years ago and like almost everyone else had my heart set on gathering as many dispensers as possible. To be honest, I did a really good job of meeting that objective and within two or three years had about two thousand dispensers. Together with the ubiquitous currents, was a large assortment of the dispensers that are at the top of collectors’ must-have and bucket lists. Make A Face, Witch A / B / Regular, Asterix trio, Fruit trio, Lion’s Club, Softheads, Ponies, Lions with Crown (98 of those), Sparefroh, the Hippo, regular Regulars, ad Regulars, rare colors, rare combos, rare countries, and so on. I was a happy guy. One day maybe four years ago, I was able to see, in person, a PEZ advertisement from the 1950’s. Something happened. I fell hard for the artistry of PEZ ads, posters, header cards, table signs, etc. They tripped my proverbial trigger far more than the dispensers ever had. And so, out went the plastic and in came the paper. Nowadays, I don’t have a PEZ room but a PEZ house. Every wall in every room of my home is covered with these beauties. All matted, framed, and under glass. Only a handful of dispensers remain and all but one are currents. I can hear a gasp and a “how could he do such a thing?” I’ll let you know in July. In April 2016, I had the opportunity to purchase, what I consider to be, a world class candy collection. It wasn’t paper but I took the plunge. A few months later, I attended the candy seminar at Pezamania and Brian and Eric got me hooked. Candy and candy boxes – more non-plastic PEZ over which to go gonzo. I’m far from the candy expert that Brian Jaskolski is (he’ll be imparting his wisdom during the 11:00am session), but in addition to paper I wanted to share my experience with the cool, and sometimes rare, candy related things I’ve been able to bring together over the past year. Hope to see you Friday at 1:00 pm ! Mark Bourland MAY 2017 ISSUE 5 More Charity Items Preview~ Brian Ian Muir, one of the most respected sculptors and artists in the film industry, has been working in film for over 46 years .
