Student Learning Outcome 1. Identify and write basic music notation of pitch. 2. Identify and write basic music notation of duration.

Course Objectives • Identify and explain music notation and terminology on a printed page. • Recognize visually and write on manuscript paper the following: a. Notes b. Major and minor scales and signature . Meter signatures and rhythmic time values of notes and rests d. Perfect, major, minor, diminished and augmented intervals e. Diatonic and chromatic intervals f. Musical keyboard and equivalents g. Major, minor, diminished and augmented triads h. Triads in major and minor keys i. Perform sight singing, ear training, rhythm clapping and tapping exercises at an elementary level.

Materials • A computer or a laptop (preferred over tablets and phones). • A printer. You'll be given worksheets to print, fill out, and submit. • A good internet connection to visit Canvas daily. • A keyboard would be beneficial, though not required • Manuscript papers and a notebook for class notes and occasionally, for tests. • A binder to keep all your worksheets.

There are NO textbooks to purchase for this class. Supplementary materials and homework information/updates will be available on Canvas. You can access Canvas through your LACC log-in.

Attendance

The required class time for this course is 3 hrs. 10min. per week. You are expected to spend at least one additional hour per day for assignments and test preparations. That adds to a minimum of 8 hours a week. During the first week, your attendance will be checked through your submission of assignments. Anyone who fails to submit assignments without proper contact will be dropped from the course.

Attendance will be checked through your course progress and Canvas activity records. If there are no Canvas activities for more than 10 days, you will be subject to a withdrawal from the class. Please make sure you keep a good communication with me should anything prevents you from checking the Canvas on a regular basis.

Drops No penalty drop deadline: Sunday, Sept. 13. Last drop deadline with a "W": Sunday, Nov. 22. When you are no longer able to complete the course work, the best course of would be to drop. Anyone who stops turning in assignments or tests for more than 2 weeks without contact after the first week will receive a failing grade. It is your responsibility to drop the course.

Attendance will be accounted by your Canvas log in information and assignment submission.

Homework and Grading Homework will be assigned each week. Please make sure you turn in all assignments on time. There will be two types of assignments: worksheet and online. • Online assignments will be given through a website and you will be prompt to upload the score after you reach the assigned number of assignments and/or score. • Worksheets will need to be printed or completed using a pdf writer. Be sure to save the work before submitting.

There will be a 10% daily penalty for works turned in after the due date. Once the site closes, you will not be allowed to submit the assignment. Make sure to check the deadline (not the closing date) for each assignment.

Extra Credit will be offered from time to time. All extra assignments will be counted towards homework grade. You must turn in the assignment on time to receive full credit. The same late work policy will apply to extra credit work.

Discussions will be assigned periodically. You will be asked to submit your opinion on the topic given and react to your classmates' responses.

Quizzes will be given twice during the term. It will be in a multiple choice/TF format and may combine a worksheet style test.

Midterm will be given during the 8th week of class. It will be divided into performance and written tests.

Final is scheduled on Monday, Dec. 14.
