And yet the accusations keep coming. How much scrutiny can the two-time Tour de France winner stand? by Michael Hall In May of last year, Lance Armstrong was riding in the Pyrenees, preparing for the upcoming Tour de France. He had just completed the seven-and-a-half-mile ride up Hautacam, a treacherous mountain that rises 4,978 feet above the French countryside. It was 36 degrees and raining, and his team's director, Johan Bruyneel, was waiting with a jacket and a ride back to the training camp. But Lance wasn't ready to go. "It was one of those moments in my life I'll never forget," he told me. "Just the two of us. I said, 'You know what, I don't think I got it. I don't understand it.1 Johan said, 'What do you mean? Of course you got it. Let's go.' I said, 'No, I'm gonna ride all the way down, and I'm gonna do it again.' He was speechless. And I did it again." Lance got it; he understood Hautacam—in a way that would soon become very clear. -

Una nueva edición de la Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias y van 59. Hablamos de una prueba deportiva que es mucho más que eso. Está prendida en los recuerdos de miles de asturianos que SALUDA siendo niños la vieron por primera vez y se hicieron adultos siguiéndola año tras año. La raigambre de esta cita en el Principado, como la del ciclismo en nuestra comunidad autónoma, es profunda. Asturias es nombre de mito en el ciclismo. Lo es por las gestas de hombres de esta tierra como López Carril o El Tarangu, por citar solo a dos figuras de una lista más extensa, o como Samuel Sánchez, por acercarnos más a nuestros días. Y lo es por los lugares legendarios de nuestra geografía, como Lagos de Covadonga o Angliru, de dureza extrema y belleza impresionante, y que han visto pedalear a tantos grandes de este deporte. En esta edición vuelve también un referente, el Santuario del Acebo en Cangas del Narcea, que será final de la Javier Fernández Fernández Presidente del primera etapa que comienza en Oviedo. Principado de Asturias Han pasado muchos años desde noviembre de 1925, cuando tuvo lugar la llamada “Pequeña Vuelta Asturias”, primera edición de esta cita que casi alcanza ya las seis décadas y que ha sabido convertirse en tradición a la vez que se acompaña de iniciativas revitalizadoras como la Vuelta Asturias Junior para escuelas, la Ciclocarrera Vintage o Ciclocarrera de la Mujer contra el Cáncer. Por ello debemos felicitar a la organización. También reconocer el mérito de una prueba que no solo genera interés entre los aficionados a través de la exhibición de valores como el esfuerzo, el trabajo en equipo o el sacrificio, sino que además, edición tras edición, se convierte en uno de los mejores escaparates para la belleza del paisaje de Asturias, para sus innumerables recursos turísticos y para todo lo que tiene que ofrecer una tierra como la nuestra donde la calidad y la calidez de sus gentes también es seña de identidad. -

Organizational Forms in Professional Cycling – Efficiency Issues of the UCI Pro Tour Luca Rebeggiani§ * Davide Tondani DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 345 First Version: August 2006 This Version: July 2007 ISSN: 0949–9962 ABSTRACT: This paper gives a first economic approach to pro cycling and analyses the changes induced by the newly introduced UCI Pro Tour on the racing teams’ behaviour. We develop an oligopolistic model starting from the well known Cournot framework to analyse if the actual setting of the UCI Pro Tour leads to a partially unmeant behaviour of the racing teams. In particular, we show that the blamed regional concentration of their race participation depends on a lack of incentives stemming from the licence assignation procedure. Our theo- retical results are supported by empirical data concerning the performance of the racing teams in 2005 and 2006. As a recommendation for future improvements, we derive from the model the need for a relegation system for racing teams. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Aufsatz stellt die erste ökonomische Analyse des professionellen Radsports dar. Er analysiert insbesondere die Anreizwirkungen der neuen UCI Pro Tour auf Teams und Fahrer. Ausgehend von dem bekannten Cournot-Ansatz entwickeln wir ein einfaches Oligopol-Modell, um zu untersuchen, ob die der- zeitige Pro Tour-Organisation zu einem unerwünschten Verhalten der Teilnehmer führt. Wir zeigen, dass insbe- sondere das Problem der geographischen Konzentration der Rennteilnahmen der Teams von den mangelnden Anreizen abhängt, die vom jetzigen Lizenzvergabesystem ausgehen. Unsere theoretischen Ergebnisse werden durch empirische Daten aus der Pro Tour 2005 und 2006 gestützt. Als Empfehlung für zukünftige Entwicklun- gen leiten wir aus dem Modell die Notwendigkeit einer Öffnung der Pro Tour ab, mit Auf- und Abstiegsmög- lichkeiten für Rennteams. -

Edition Spéciale 245 Ce 27 avril 2014 : La Doyenne des Classiques souffle ses 100 bougies à Ans… Depuis de nombreuses années, la commune d’Ans et le cyclisme connaissent une véritable histoire d’amour. C’est notamment en 1992 que l’aventure « Liège-Bastogne-Liège » débuta à Ans, en quittant son arrivée traditionnelle à Liège pour arriver tout d’abord rue de l’Yser et enfin rue Jean Jaurès au terme de la terrible côte de Saint-Nicolas. La Doyenne inspire le respect à tous les coureurs, celui qui s’y impose ne peut être qu’un Grand, il suffit à ce propos de parcourir le palmarès de cette course en page 3. Mais derrière l’exploit purement sportif de ce Liège- Bastogne-Liège, se cache également une fantastique fête populaire qui rassemble toutes les générations, que l’on soit sportif ou non. A une époque où tout se paie, le cyclisme est encore un des rares sports « Spectacle » entièrement gratuit pour le public. En tant que Bourgmestre d’Ans, je suis particulièrement fier de cette arrivée qui, l’espace d’un jour, met à l’honneur notre commune. Je voudrais à ce propos mettre en exergue le travail accompli par le personnel de l’Echevinat des Sports et des Travaux dirigé par Grégory Philippin, ainsi que par les services de Police. En effet, au cours de ces dernières années, une véritable complicité s’est installée entre la société organisatrice « Amaury Sport Organisation » et notre commune, qui au travers de cette manifestation démontre ses compétences en matière d’organisation. En marge de ces aspects techniques, Ans a également voulu marquer le coup à l’occasion de cette 100e édition. -
