PALMER OUTLINES RUNNING PLANS REGALLY BRED COLT AIMS Hugo Palmer=s season is running a little behind schedule FOR FIRST STAKES WIN compared to this time last year, but his team=s 27% strike rate in the last 14 days suggests the yard is starting to hit top gear. Two group wins last weekend also lend credence to this and the trainer issued an update on Tuesday on both Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire}) and Escobar (Ire) (Famous Name {GB}), two horses Palmer had high hopes for at the beginning of the season. After his win in the G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket last September Best Of Days went into winter quarters as a potential Derby horse, but having missed Epsom he began his season in the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot. The Godolphin colt made little impression, eventually coming home last behind Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). AIt was a messy race and it went badly for him,@ Palmer commented. AHe was drawn wide and was a bit sluggish away but it was only the fourth run of his career. He has come back from it great, but I think with him now we will go through his grades.@ Cont. p2 IN TDN AMERICA TODAY Frontiersman wins with his ears pricked at Newmarket | Racing Post OPPENHEIM ON FASIG-TIPTON JULY The yearling sales season is almost here and Bill Oppenheim Charlie Appleby is hoping to get the Moet and Chandon July breaks down the Fasig-Tipton July catalogue by the numbers. Much is expected from Frontiersman, being a son of the brilliant seven-time Group/Grade 1 winner Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and a half-brother to dual Derby winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), so it was slightly disappointing to see him well beaten on his first start outside handicap company in a Group 3 at Newbury last autumn. The colt has obviously thrived from age three to four, however, and after easily winning a competitive handicap at Newmarket in May, Appleby pitched him straight into Group 1 company in the Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom where he beat all bar Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Having lived up to his birthright of being a graded stakes performer, Appleby is keen to take the next step and make Frontiersman a graded stakes winner.

FOURSTAR CROOK TAKES EIGHTH STRAIGHT FASIG JULY YEARLINGS New York-bred Fourstar Crook (Freud) made her first stakes try out of restricted company count Tuesday as she kicked home convincingly to take her eighth consecutive trip to the winner=s circle following Parx=s GIII Dr. James Penny Memorial S. Drifting up to 36-10 from a 2-1 morning-line quote, the Chad Brown trainee settled in off the pace and was second last as they hit the home bend. Given her cue to quicken by Joe Bravo after six furlongs in 1:12 2/5, the 5-year-old bay mare swung extremely wide and gobbled up ground down the center of the course to win by a widening 2 1/4-length margin. My Impression (Sky Mesa) nipped last-out GIII Galorette S. winner Cambodia (War Front) for runner-up honors. Fourstar Crook kicked off her 2017 season belatedly with a tally in Belmont=s Mount Vernon S. May 29 on yielding sod and over a stablemate. Two years ago 205 yearlings sold for a total of $20,005,000, a jump of 31% from 2014, and averaged $97,585. “The 2015 Fasig July Yearling Sale grossed $20-million for the first time since 2009 and averaged $97,585, representing post-crash peaks, but last year the gross fell by 21% - over $4-million – and the average by 12% from the 2015 peak. But the 2-year-old market this spring, which had seen a similar pattern, peaking in 2015, then dropping in 2016, made a big recovery this year, topping 2016 figures by a big margin, but also edging above 2015. With 15% fewer catalogued it’s unlikely this year’s Fasig July Yearling Sale gross can top 2015; we’d be estimating it more in the region of $17-$18 million, but with pinhookers likely to be ready to rumble, Fasig would be over the moon if they could get close to a $100,000 average. Monday’s Horses of Racing Age Sale should be plenty strong too.”
