BY ROBERT BURNS Associated Press WASHINGTON — The U.S. military is considering “creative ways” to get Americans and oth- ers into the Kabul airport for evac- uation from Afghanistan amid “acute” security threats, Biden administration officials said, and the Pentagon on Sunday ordered six U.S. commercial airlines to help move evacuees from tempo- rary sites outside of Afghanistan. At the one-week mark since the Taliban completed their takeover of the country by sweeping into the capital, U.S. officials ex- pressed growing concern about the threat to the evacuation from Islamic State. That worry comes in addition to obstacles to that mis- sion from the Taliban, as well as U.S. government bureaucratic problems. BY JENNIFER H. SVAN Stars and Stripes RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — An Afghan mother gave birth to a baby girl aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 on Saturday soon after the plane landed at Ramstein, the Air Force said. The mother went into labor during the flight and Air Force medical crews at Ram- stein helped deliver the child in the cargo bay of the aircraft, Air Mobility Command said in a statement Saturday. The plane originated from an intermedi- ate staging base in the Middle East, AMC said. Most evacuation flights into Ramstein have come from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, where evacuees were first flown after leav- ing Kabul following the Taliban’s seizure of the capital city Aug. 15. The flight from Qatar to Ramstein is about six hours. While in labor, the woman began experiencing complications due to low blood pressure, AMC said. The aircraft commander descended to increase air pres- sure in the aircraft, a decision that helped stabilize and save the mother’s life, the AMC statement said. Upon landing, airmen from the 86th Med- ical Group boarded and delivered the child in the aircraft cargo bay. The Air Force did not say what time the baby was delivered. The baby and mother were transported to a nearby medical facility and are in good condition, AMC said. They were likely taken to Landstuhl Re- gional Medical Center, the largest U.S. Ar- my hospital overseas, which is a few min- utes’ drive from Ramstein. Officials at Ramstein have said evacuees with medical emergencies that can’t be handled there would be transported to LRMC. AMC did not say whether this was the first child delivered on a C-17. Evan Wise captured the crash on his helmet camera which shows a car pull out in front of him in an apparent attempt to make a U-turn. Wise hit his brakes, but it was too late. He hit the driver-side door and flipped over the car. His helmet camera flew off but landed facing both Wise and the car.
