Assessment Report Cachar District (Additional) Of IAG-Assam Assam Flood 2012

Type of Disaster : Flood caused by the river Jiri tributary and Barak river.

Date of reporting : 16.7.2012

Location : Cachar district of Assam and Tamenglong and East Districts in Date of flood : 26 th June 2012.

Time of Occurrence: At 10.00 pm of 26 th June till 5.00 am of 27th June 2012.

Heavy rainfall in the upper hillside of Jiri river that Cause of Flood : divides Assam and Manipur and blocked water by heavy landslide at Jirnam.

The incessant rainfall in the upper hillside of jiri river both in Assam and Manipur and land sliding at Jirnam (name of a place falls in Assam inhabited by Zeme tribe of Assam) blocked the running river water on 26 th of June2012 as a result of which the adjoining villages of Assam and Manipur were affected severely and swept away many houses at a glance. The Jiri river divides Assam and Manipur that caused the flood. The sudden landslide at Jinam (Kamachera) blocked the water of the upstream water and submerged the area and nobody of the area had any knowledge how flood is caused and the overflow of water in the upstream submerged either side of the river affecting the population of Assam and Manipur. The flood water remained from 26 th June to 27 th of June2012. The flood had swept away many houses, domestic animals and belongings including human being.

No. of casualty: So far 5 persons reported death in the flood (unofficial sources).

Barak River flood:

The Barak river and its tributaries have affected 6 GP and two blocks in Cachar District. More information will be shared after visiting and assessing the affected area. The flood was occurred on 26 th of June2012 by overflowing of water on either sides of the Barak valley. No of village GP Block District State

Present Situation and observation:

Relief camp : Five families are still in Kamranga Muslim Basti LP School that I the team visited.

People are still taking shelter in relief camps organized by local youth clubs and Government. Those who are in the relief camps are provided with Rice, Salt, Dal, Garlic, Mustard oil and Potatos.

Drinking water : People are using river water for drinking and other purposes as there is no alternative way for them to accept. Some churches provide financial support and ration to those affected families. Local youths takes up the initiatives of building temporary settlement for those whose house is damaged completely.

Hygiene : The people of the flood affected area are defecating in the open and there is every possibility of occurring different kinds of diseases. Children are beginning to suffer various diseases like diarrhea, scabes, malaria, fever, boil, etc.

Intervention of agencies /NGO’s: • WHH and IGSSS carrying out details assessment and coming up with emergency response • Baptist Association (RNBA) in collaboration with PESCH (NGO) distributed 60 Nos of tarpoulin to 60 worst affected families both Assam and Monipur part, • New Alipur Baptist Church provided Rs. 5000/- to mayapur village,Ramgaijang and Kamranga Muslim Basti, • Emannnual Rural Welfare Society, Pailapool— provided financial and medical camp. • The district administration (Cachar) provided 10kgs of rice for those affected families. On the other hand, the district administration of Jiribam ( Imphal East) provided 5 kgs of rice for those flood victims of Manipur side.
