Welcome to Rice University's 106th Commencement. Today, the entire Rice community comes together to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our 2019 graduating class, which includes those receiving bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The faculty and staff of Rice are privileged to have played a part in educating such an extraordinary group of students. We warmly salute their accomplishments and are grateful for their contributions to Rice. Like the many students who preceded them, we expect the graduates of 2019 to go o n to achieve great things and make notable accomplishments in our world. Our graduate students emerge well prepared for their professions and for making intellectual contributions and discoveries. Our undergraduate students who receive their degrees today will symbolically complete a journey by their exit through the same Sallyport that they entered when they arrived at Rice. All of our students have grown as scholars and citizens. I am confident that Rice has prepared them well for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We extend an especially warm welcome to family members and friends who are joining our students on this special day. Many of you have traveled great distances to celebrate the achievements of your child, spouse, partner, parent, relative or friend. We know your presence means so much to them, and we hope that the day is as meaningful for you as it is for our grdduating students. We wish to thank you for the support and encouragement that you have given to them. The presence of our trustees, faculty, staff and alumni at Commencement demonstrates the pride that our entire university has in these distinguished graduates. We wish them well in the next chapter of their lives, and we expect that they will return many times to visit their alma mater.
