Pope Francis on Wednesday appointed , currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Andrews and as the new .

Bishop Robson will replace Bishop who stood down as Bishop of Dunkeld after almost 30 years in December 2010 on health grounds. Monsignor Basil O’Sullivan has been the Administrator of the Diocese in the interim.

Reacting to the announcement, Bishop Robson said;

“I am deeply honoured to have been chosen by as the next Bishop of Dunkeld. Dunkeld is a beautiful diocese set in the heart of Scotland and I look forward to living and working there, getting to know the clergy, religious and laity and accompanying them on their Christian journey. I look forward to trying to build up the People of God in the Faith and in the confidence of being Catholic in a challenging world. I look forward especially to helping the young and families to live the Gospel and to serve Christ in the Church. A big priority must also be to encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life”

Welcoming the appointment of his successor, Bishop Vincent Logan said;

“I was delighted to hear that Pope Francis has chosen Bishop Stephen Robson as my successor as the Bishop of Dunkeld. I offer Bishop Stephen my warmest congratulations on his appointment and assure him of my prayers and support as he prepares to begin his ministry in the Diocese of Dunkeld.”

The President of the Conference of Scotland, Philip Tartaglia, Archbishop of Glasgow, also congratulated Bishop Robson, saying;

“On behalf of the Bishops Conference of Scotland, I congratulate Bishop Stephen Robson on his appointment as Bishop of Dunkeld. I am very pleased for Bishop Stephen and for the Diocese of Dunkeld. I wish him every blessing in his new responsibilities.”

Welcoming him to the Diocese of Dunkeld, Monsignor Ken McCaffrey in his capacity as Delegate of the Diocesan Administrator, said:

“In one sense, our Advent period of waiting has come to an end earlier than we had anticipated. We offer our heartfelt welcome to our new Bishop and promise him a warm welcome to the Diocese of Dunkeld, where we look forward to working with him.” PASTORAL LETTER FROM BISHOP-ELECT STEPHEN

Dear Priests, , Religious and People of Dunkeld Diocese.

I am sure that by now you will have heard that Pope Francis has appointed me, Bishop Stephen Robson, as your new Bishop. I am absolutely delighted to be called to serve you. I have already experienced something of your warm welcome.

The Diocese of Dunkeld is arguably the oldest established diocese in Scotland, though the Reformation interrupted its continued existence until the Restoration of the Catholic Hierarchy in 1878.

A diocese is described by the Church herself as a ‘Portion of the People of God’ and being a Bishop of a diocese is all about service to, and about building with God’s grace, that Portion of God’s People by the preaching of the Word and the nourishment extended to them in the Sacraments. Further, the Church is like an organism. Each cell in the organism has its own part to play in the building up of the whole organism. Moreover, there are many different kinds of cells in the organism each having their own structure and function, but all contributing to the Common Good of the whole.

As part of the Lord’s Church the diocese is also a mystery; a mystery in which the Lord and Master is present working in many different ways to build us all up in love. So we all have our part to play in this mystery. The Bishop especially cannot play his part without the love, communion and cooperation of the Priests, the lay faithful and the Religious brothers and sisters which each contribute their charismas and gifts to benefit the whole Church My dear people I really look forward to being with you, to work with and for you, the cooperate with the priests especially to help you get closer to the Lord and to make your pilgrim way through life towards that happy prospect the Lord himself holds out before us which is eternal life with him in the Kingdom of Heaven. We have much to do on our pilgrim journey and what our task involves will become apparent to us as we work together in doing the Lord’s work.

It is not easy being a Catholic Christian today; much of what we experience in our world seems at odds with the way we are called to live. We get caught up in the distractions and sometimes also by the illusions of life. And the call of Jesus to live our lives in imitation of him often collide and clash with the values our world asks us to embrace. And yet we are called to live our lives IN our world. No wonder our Catholic culture sometimes is at odds with the society in which we live. But we CAN live faithful to Jesus with his help and working together, as a community, each fulfilling our own role with one mind, the mind of Jesus.

Dear People of Dunkeld, may I invite you to pray for me. I want to serve you well. I need to get to know you and to know your priests so that we can all work well together to serve you better. Shortly you will receive invitations to my Installation as your Bishop in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Dundee on Thursday, 9th January 2014 at 7.00pm. I would like as many of you as possible to be there, but realistically we may have to have some sort of quota system so that other guests can come as well. The Scottish Bishops will also be there and priests and bishops and people from other dioceses too. So if I don’t get a chance to meet you on that occasion I hope to meet you very soon at official parish visitations, confirmations, school visits etc. So please be patient; we will all meet up soon and I look forward to it.

In the meantime please pray for me as I shall for you! The New Year beckons, but we have the remainder of the lovely season of Advent and the beautiful season of Christmas to look forward to. Do all you can to prepare for the coming of the Saviour. If you can, please be reconciled with the Lord in Confession before Christmas. What a wonderful way that would be to start the New Year and a new era for us all.

With every good wish and a blessing

+ Stephen

Bishop-Elect of Dunkeld. 11th December 2013
