Mission Statement

To maintain and improve Hoyt and its collection for all people through advocacy, resources, awareness and education.

Hoyt Arboretum relies on the support of Friends, a membership-based non- profit organization working in partnership with Parks & Recreation.

2014 Annual Report

From the Board President and Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Thank you for helping Hoyt Arboretum Friends (HAF) have another fulfilling and productive year making improvements to Hoyt Arboretum.

In 2014 HAF membership grew by 24%, over $80,000 was raised at the Forage in the Forest fund- raiser for education and tree maintenance, 600 tree huggers cuddled trees at the Hug-A-Tree-At- Hoyt event and Portland Parks & Recreation added 2.24 acres to Hoyt Arboretum. In our global col- lection, a spectacular new Bamboo Forest is being installed thanks to a generous gift from Janice Stewart and Gordy Allen through the Allen Family Foundation, with additional funding from the Ned Jaquith Foundation and Bill and Kuniko deWeese family, and the Board donated funds for a weather station to be installed in 2015.

In our global collection, your contributions to the Tree Fund allowed us to plant 171 new plants; im- prove the Winter Garden with new drainage, plants and decorative rocks; create a new garden in the Maple collection by excavating a plot, adding nutritious soil, upgrading the drainage system and building a rock retaining wall. 513 new plants were acquired and an industrial-grade potting bench was purchased to increase our capacity for plant propagation. Your donations also helped to beauti- fy the Overlook with rock features and decorative plants that enhance the visitor experience for peo- ple from Portland and around the world.

Thanks to your generosity, contributed income increased by 8% allowing HAF to expand our safety net by adding to our financial reserves and create new programs. Those new programs include Tree Buddies – our youth environmental edu- cation program featuring activities and special kid’s tours. Additional Saturday work crews have been added and Hoyt Arboretum Herbarium activities have increased with interns and volunteer archivists now meeting weekly to preserve and archive plant specimens used for scientific research and conservation.

These programs and many more could not happen without our small army of dedicated volunteers, the numbers of whom have increased significantly in 2014 from 400 to 763. Volunteer hours increased from 7,865 to nearly 11,000 - a $254,000 value! HAF set records with 103 volunteers at the Parke Diem work days and at Arborists in the Arboretum when 89 arborists from 31 companies volunteered their professional services for tree maintenance valued at nearly $27,000.

The spirit of giving is alive and well at Hoyt Arboretum and thanks to you HAF and the arboretum continue to grow stronger for the community and the world. We could not meet our mission to maintain and improve Hoyt Arboretum and its collection for all people through advocacy, resources, awareness and education without you. Your time, treasure and talents made Hoyt Arboretum better in 2014. Through your donations and volunteerism we have collectively worked to steward Hoyt Arboretum - Portland’s museum of living trees - as a place for global conservation, education, research, recreation and display.

It takes all of us – members, donors, volunteers, board and staff to nurture our urban treasure, and HAF is committed to making even more progress in 2015 with your help. Please accept our deepest appreciation for your commitment to sup- port the world’s trees and make an investment for future generations.

Temperature wise, 2014 was a great year for growing plants with only one chal- lenging temperature change. In mid-November the overnight temperatures rap- idly dropped from a comfortable 50 degrees to 28 degrees. The plants had little time to acclimatize, and some tip and leaf damage from that weather event has been observed. More notable though were the wind storms that frequented the end of the year. Peak gusts were recorded at 60 miles per hour in October, 54 miles per hour in November and 67 miles per hour in December. There were significant losses at the arboretum, and Horticulturist Mark McKinney noted that we had 20 days in a row of chainsaw operation clearing large fallen trees. Thanks as always to the many volunteers who helped with this extensive task.

On a more positive note, some of the removals were planned due to the development of our new Bamboo Forest collec- tion site. The removal and planting of the site have created a drastic landscape change along Fischer Lane by opening up the area and improving the overall viewing opportunities of the surrounding collections. Some of the removed stumps found their way to offsite parks to improve habitat. The bamboo installation and site preparations consumed many hours, and we appreciated the help of Tuesday Crew, New Seasons employees and bamboo experts Dain Sansome, Ian Con- ner and Noah Bell, as well as the designer of the site Anna Foleen. Twenty-one species and cultivars of bamboo were planted to represent the diverse growth habits of bamboo.

Notable spring plantings include the addition of six new species of maple that we have not previously grown. After moni- toring their performance, we will report on their suitability for the Portland area. In the process of preparing for this plant- ing, the intersection of the Maple and Hawthorn Trails was landscaped to improve site drainage and beautify the corner. Acer pentaphyllum was planted in the new bed at this intersection.

The Winter Garden was another site that received an extensive overhaul. Mark McKinney, our new horticulturist who started at Hoyt in January 2014, has received a lot of great feedback on his efforts. The Winter Garden is one of the few areas in the arboretum whose role is strictly aesthetic; as such, Mark has been able to exercise his creativity in the design and plant palette. HAF funded the plants and materials used in the redesign.

Erin Riggs continues to work on species verification and vouchering of the collection. We now have 853 items in the herbarium including a mix of arboretum vouchers and local native and invasive plants. The use of this resource has been increasing with regional land management staff and the general public referencing the vouchers for plant identi- fication.

A few of the interesting plants we added in 2014:

 Salix fargesii  Viburnum parvifolium  X Gordlinia grandiflora  Austrocedrus chilensis  Psuedolarix amabilis

We engaged in a plant relocation effort working with the Lan Su to extract a Keetelaria evelyiana that had been growing there for 15 years. The tree was taking up more space than was available and needed a new home. After digging and wrapping the root ball, the tree was lifted out of the garden with a crane. Page 4 Volunteers

On behalf of everyone who uses and enjoys Hoyt Arboretum, we extend a resounding THANK YOU to the 763 volunteers who donated 10,860 hours of their time and talents to the arboretum!

Volunteers play a critical role in all aspects of Hoyt Arboretum’s maintenance and programming. Their leadership, labor, and love are reflected everywhere - from the labeled trees and groomed trails to the smiling faces of visitors from all over the world.

Labor costs make up 80% of the maintenance budget for Portland’s parks, and volunteers provide nearly one-third of the labor that keeps our parks safe, open, clean and beautiful. The volunteer spirit that motivates so many talented and busy people is an essential part of keeping Hoyt Arboretum’s global garden growing, its trails safe and accessible, and its visi- tors informed about the arboretum.

Volunteers are involved with the arboretum for opportunities to learn new things, share knowledge and experiences, and maybe even develop skills towards a new career or hobby. Enduring friendships are born here, nurtured by shared pas- sions for trees, the arboretum and the wonders of nature.

Volunteer support for HAF enables us to:

 Maintain the arboretum’s collection and 12 miles of trails  Staff the Visitor Center to answer visitors’ questions and provide maps and brochures  Guide outdoor tours to educate visitors about the arboretum’s collection  Offer special events at the arboretum 763 HAF Volunteers Donated  Add programs and projects 10,860 Hours in 2014

“Can we visit fairy forest today?” “These trees are huge!” “I love it in the summer house!” These are three of the most common things heard by all of us at Portland Parks Environmental Education when we are lead- ing groups of toddlers, campers, classroom and teens along the trails of Hoyt Arboretum!

There are 12 miles of trails through Hoyt Arboretum – and there is a good chance our City Nature Educators and Naturalists at Portland Parks are familiar with them all. Each year we spend hours out on the trails – everything from leading the Ladybug Nature Walks for toddlers and preschoolers to exploring nature’s magical mysteries during Nature Day Camp to teaching science and ethnobotany to our GRUNT and Jr GRUNT (Greenspaces Restoration and Urban Naturalist Team) teen naturalists in training. Hoyt Arboretum proves to be one of Portland Parks shining gems regardless of the age of the participant or the abil- ity of the hiker – as educators of our PP&R Natural Areas, we are so thankful to have this space in which to learn, play and steward for the future.

Last year alone, participants in programs with Portland Parks Environ- mental Education spent over 7,500 hours in nature. Many of our teens visit Hoyt Arboretum for the first time through a GRUNT program, and many of our very youngest Ladybug Walkers go on to take nature clas- ses, do field trips and become campers as they get older. At PP&R Environmental Education, we value substantial, long-term relation- ships. Each participant’s positive relationship to nature is quintessential to having them care for and protect the space as they get older, and even though our lessons look different for different age-groups, each one values both knowledge and connection to place.

We are especially thankful each year to the Hoyt Arboretum Friends group as they sell the Holiday Wreaths during the December fundraiser. This year, we had a fantastic group of volunteers led by Heather Wilkinson come and help make them, and were so thankful for Becky Schreiber and Peggie Schwarz as they helped organize the sales at the arbore- tum. In total, we raised $13,000 to help bring Portland children from underserved neighborhoods to camp who could not otherwise afford it. Thanks HAF! We could not have done that without you!

We look forward to the learning and play in the coming months and years at Hoyt Arboretum, and hope for help with many more wreaths to come!

Page 7 Financials

2014 represents the third consecutive year of revenue growth at HAF. Earned and contributed revenue increased approximately $14,000 or 4% over 2013. Indi- vidual and corporate contributions lead this increase with 20% and 89% increases, respectively, over 2013 and Forage in the Forest, our annual fundraising event, again made a significant contribution to the annual results.

These strong financial results, coupled with effective cost management, resulted in an approximate $38,000 increase in net assets for the year, more than double the 2013 increase of approximately $19,000.
