McKenzie resides in Englewood, New Jersey with his wife Natalie Bowen-McKenzie. He is the proud father of one daughter, Keisha McKenzie-Pagden, and grandfather to Samuel McKenzie-Pagden. 2 2017 Honors Convocation About the University Honors College In 1963, Dr. Walter S. Davis, who was the second President of Tennessee State University (TSU), appointed a committee that was charged with the responsibility of studying honors programs and determining the feasibility of establishing one at the University. After completing the investigation, the committee recommended that TSU keep pace with many other universities throughout the country. As a result, an Honors Program for freshman students started in the fall semester of 1964. Sophomore through Senior level course work was added annually throughout 1968, thus marking the year of the first student to graduate with “University Honors,” a distinction that is reserved for students who have successfully completed the requirements of the University Honors College (UHC). Dr. McDonald Williams became director of the Honors Program at TSU in 1966 and held that position until his retirement in 1988. Additionally, he gave 30 years of distinguished service as an English professor at TSU. The University Honors Center, which is now located in the Harold M. Love, Sr. Student Success Center, was named the McDonald Williams Honors Center on October 31, 1995. Dr. Joan Elliot served as interim director from 1988- 1990, Dr. Mayibuye Monanabela served as director from 1990 – 1992 and Dr. Sandra Holt from 1992 – 2013. The current dean, Dr. Coreen Jackson, was appointed by Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, 8th President of Tennessee State University in 2013. It was the desire of President Glover and administrators to implement the goal of the Academic Master Plan 2008- 2028 that enhanced the Honors Program and transitioned it into an Honors College. In January 2016, the Honors Program was approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to be elevated from an Honors Program to an Honors College. The Honors College currently consists of over 400 multi-disciplinary students who maintain an overall GPA of 3.25 or above. It is our honor to be celebrating the TSU Honors College with this observation of academic excellence and a commitment to higher education during the 2017 Honors Convocation. 2017 Honors Convocation 3 Order of Ceremony Master and Mistress of Ceremony Mr. Ramon Guitierrez-Martinez, Mr. Honors (2016-2017) and Miss Lexis Stewart, Miss Honors (2016-2017) Processional ....................................................Platform Guests & Faculty Mediation .........................................................Mr. Jaquantey Bowens Senior, Biology, 4.0 GPA, University Honors College “The Star-Spangled Banner” (Audience stands) ...............................Francis Scott Key “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”...........................................James Weldon Johnson Dr. Reginald McDonald, Conductor, Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble Greetings ...................................................... For that course, I translated a letter of Saint Maximus the Confessor (580- 662) that is found among his works known collectively as the Opuscula theologica et polemica.1 My immediate interest in the text was Maximus’s treatment of the twin heresies of monoenergism and monotheletism. Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways. First, I demonstrate that Hilary’s teaching concerning Christ’s assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ’s assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic influence. I demonstrate that Hilary is not influenced by Platonism; rather, though his redemption model is unique among the early Latin fathers, he derives his theology from a combination of Latin-influenced biblical exegesis and classical Roman themes.

#EndTheWarOnDrugs April 9, 2013 President Barack H. Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, Your hard work and leadership on issues affecting the unrepresented classes of people in our nation have served as an inspiration to many of us who hope for brighter futures for all Americans. In that spirit, we believe the time is right to further the work you have done around revising our national policies on the criminal justice system and continue moving from a suppression-based model to one that focuses on intervention and rehabilitation. We are proud of your accomplishments around these issues, specifically your leadership on gun control, your investments in "problem solving courts," your creation of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council, your launching the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention and your prosecution of a record number of hate crimes in 2011 and 2012. We certainly hope that this type of leadership is appreciated by all members of Congress, regardless of political affiliation, and you are joined by members of all parties in your pursuit of a more perfected union. Mr. President, it is evident that you have demonstrated a commitment to pursue alternatives to the enforcement-only "War on Drugs" approach and address the increased incarceration rates for non-violent crimes. Your administration has moved in the right direction by committing increased funds to drug prevention and treatment programs and supporting state and local re-entry grants. We encourage you to continue your efforts to revamp the policies of the last 30 years that have seen the prison population skyrocket.

  • Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006),
